Encode Plus also supports HomeKit for controlling the lock with the Home app or Siri voice commands on an iPhone or Apple Watch, as well as Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. The lock has a physical keypad and a keyhole to unlock the door without a device if necessary, providing peace of mind if you are without your iPhone or Apple Watch.

"I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that"

That's cool, but I never understood these. Won't you still need a key to unlock the door knob? All my exterior doors have a lock on the door knob and a dead bolt. This seems to just replace the deadbolt and unlock that. You still have to take out a physical key to unlock the door knob.
Our exterior doors never have locks on the door knobs, And door knob locks are super simple to by-pass, because the latch has to be able to spring back into place when the knob is locked.

Am I the only person whose front door requires a little, how do you say... motivation... to lock?

These work great if your door is perfectly aligned...

Also, I am surprised we haven't seen locks that allow for the door to be unlocked when your apple watch is within a foot of the handle. The tap feature is nice for visitors, but a smart lock would simply unlock for people who have permission to enter.

my knob is just a knob....

I love this, as I don't always have my hands free, and just putting an Apple Watch up to a lock would be handy.
Or for me it would work well on an outbuilding where the key is not usually on me, and I often have to go fetch it, or similarly, have my hands full.

Actually. Yes. And I have spent years trying to widdle down to no keys. Almost got there last summer. Now back to a few.

But for me.

ALWAYS having fewer keys makes my life just a little bit more stress-free.
The point is, I still have to get some type of fob out of my pocket or bag for this. Doesn't matter if it's a key or phone. If this worked in close proximity without having to take your phone out of your pocket/bag it would then be a great convenience.

I've had a smart lock with a keypad for years and that works great because I don't need anything besides my finger if I'm already carrying other thing. There is also nothing for me to forget. If I go walk my dog or for a run I don't need to grab or carry anything extra.

Will this functionality require you to double click on the home button like apple pay to activate? Or will it work like express transit where you won't need to do the double click?

I'm hoping for no double click; I've been having the same problems since the pandemic where I'm buying a lot of groceries and I don't have a free hand to open the door with keys.

Yes, but I have never used the knob lock in any house I have lived in. The deadbolt is far more secure so I never really saw the point of the added hassle. That said, I don't see myself ever going keyless. The off-chance of my phone quitting while I am out exists, and I am not a fan of leaving spare keys hidden about.
read the specs... it works even If your phone is dead.... it also has a keypad... My house came with keypad locks, so much better than ever using keys.

the whole point of homekey is it uses express

So what's the major benefit to this Homekey? I am neck deep in HomeKit products and will likely get this for no reason other than my "original" August garage lock has become worthless. But most of these locks unlock when I come home automatically and lock automatically when I leave. Is there anyone that uses the geolocation feature of these locks and will get a major benefit out of the Homekey support?

I also don't lock the handle lock. Stopped doing that years ago.
I, too, have the original August lock. I would like to replace it with something that works with my watch, as I've found August's Apple Watch app worthless. Then I could go for runs or walks around the neighborhood and come back and use my watch to unlock the door. But, I don't think I'm ready to spend $300 to make that happen.

yup and some houses shift in winter. my august locks were very hard to use in my apartment years ago. At my new house I managed to mess with the plate enough that it generally works year round. once in a blue moon I have to pull the door slightly

My apartment has an app that allows you to unlock the door remotely or with NFC when close to it. I guess it might lack the supposed security that Apple’s solution offers, but I don’t think a lot of people are going to spend 300$ on a lock just to unlock it with their phone.

There is still a keypad, so you can enter a 4 digit code to unlock the door. No key required.

This is already a dated concept. Taking your phone out and tapping your door to unlock?

When I pull in to the driveway I run a homekit scene for arriving home that does a lot more than unlock the door. But it also unlocks the door.

If for any reason I don't do that, the door unlocks with a pin code. Which is still faster than digging the phone out and hoping for that to work.

If anything, it would be better to have these "keys" features work with Apple Watch, which of course none of them do.

Me: Hey Siri, lock the front door.

Siri: I couldn't find Mock the In-Laws in your Apple Music library...

My door only has a deadbolt lock. There’s not really a need to lock both if you have both anyway. If someone can break through the deadbolt, the lock on the handle will present no additional challenge.

Soon hackers will steal not only digital stuff but also physical, from your home. They already steals cars with just a pc...
I already imagine in 50 years from now, companies selling super-safe (and VINTAGE of course), mechanical locks at 20x current prices (+inflation %) :)

Mechanical locks are easily picked, though.

The benefit is it's one action to unlock, tap phone or watch. You have to pull out Homekit and unlock the lock manually, or set a scene to do it automatically, but this is an alternative to make the process quicker without requiring an automation.

It does work with Watch according to this very article.
