but the point is, why arent you just playing games on a low cost gaming pc?

For that matter, why not just get a console?

Some people obviously like playing the occasional game, but don't want to spend an addition $600 to do so. If you're a "hardcore" gamer... you probably would get a console or a PC

1. if doom 3 is coming out on mac first, why are major pc hardware sites using the latest builds of doom 3 for benchmarking hardware? hmmm... id like to see a build of doom 3 running on a mac.

2. if you have the money to buy a mac (i dont care what you say, if youve bought a new mac in the last 10 years, at the time, it was a considerable investment, it doesnt mean your rich, but it does mean you have money to spend) you can afford to build a gaming pc. and consoles are ridiculous, outdated, and alot of console game developers are crappy, and games are crappy.

and if im being totally retarded, just ignore me, dont even bother replying.

Sitting on my bench, tossing bread to the trolls in the park...

As most gamers know, Doom III was shown first on the Mac. The first ever demo was at MacWorld--same event where the GeForce 3 was unveiled.

I'll refrain from comment on the assertion that $600 is nothing to Mac users. I'll just say that I personally want one computer, not the expense/desk space/annoyance of two--and do-it-yourself sounds fun, but it's not a project I have time to mess with. In fact, if I bought a machine for gaming alone, it would still be a Mac, because I'd still have to maintain and deal with it--and don't care if I have to wait a few months for a game when there are already more than I could ever buy. Some gamers would choose a PC or a console--and they WOULD be a better choice for some. But not for everyone.

For the record, if my friends had consoles with good, mouse-driven, Internet multiplayer games on them, I'd happily join their fun. And I do own a PC--it was cheap, and thus unreliable, and so I won't bother dropping in a good gaming board. I'd pay more next time I bought a PC and get a name-brand box. I don't want to have to be an "expert" to own a computer. But since my Mac does everything I need, including running Windows XP for the occasional task, there won't BE a next time for me and PCs.

OOOOOOOH! Hopefully this means...........

Deus Ex FOR OSX! DEUS EX FOR OSX!..........:D :p

Finally another reason to play the game another 5 Billion times! :D

Actually, I bouaght a mac, not because I can afford it, because I can't, but I prefer the experiece of the mac over a PC. I use PCs (Win98 - XP) at work and don't want the same at home. I took a loan against my 401k in order to get the money to buy my machine. Before this past summer I always bought used. I will use this machine "till I run it into the ground" or in about 4 years when its paid off.

I did get a Playstaion 2 for my birthday but the games I play on a console are different than what I play on my comp. On the comp I prefer Strategy/war and some RPGs where I play mostly sport titles and family games with others on the playstation.

I will not buy a PC because you think its cheap. If I had wantred a PC in the house I could have had one already.

My main reason for wanting this is my home network consists of 7 macs of various generations going back to a beige G3. I CAN play UT on my home network. I could not play UT2K on my home etwork, just my dual 1 gig machine.
Since I migrated all machines to X, i miss my little LAN parties with UT. Its a hassle to boot into 9 IMHO.
So, this is a welcome change, and i still rule cause I use the Dual 1 gig :-0

Is there a need for this game, now that we have a newer version? Perhaps any mods availabe, that are cool?
There is definitely need for this game. As you may have noticed, the control system for UT2K3 for OS X is horrendous. I don't even bother playing the demo anymore. It feels just like playing the orig. UT feels if you were to take a 4" stick and glue it to the top of your mouse, and hold onto the end of that and move it about for control. The mouse response is non-linear depending upon the complexity of the scene you are viewing at the moment. And it's not an issue of weak hardware as I'm using a dual G4 800 with GeForce 3 and 768MB RAM running OS X 10.2.6.

Hopefully UT will come forth for OS X.

Because...

1. because it leaked. Doom 3 was demoed a long time ago at some macworld or wwdc.

2. What if you don't want to build a gaming PC because you don't want the trouble of owning a PC? think about that for a moment, will ya?

im so close to buying an xbox.
i play quake 3 right now.

but im sorta feeling the age of the graphics. would unreal champion be THAT much of a difference? or its pretty much the same as UT? i was told to just get an xbox and halo? it seems that it will be around 179 for the system and 50 for the game as well as 50 for the online kit :O maybe i'll wait on the online part. so anyway if i use to love quake will the xbox and unreal championship and halo be a good mix? i wish i could see the trailers but their not working.

EDIT damn it what the hell.....damn it. NONE of the trailers for unreal tournament OR halo work. and the gamecube site doesnt work when you choose to view games like say resident evil. how freaken HARD can maintaining a site for companies like nintendo and xbox be? even the PS2 site doesnt have a consistan and working site. a lot of their games dont even have screen shots.

So, based on your logic, Ryan should stop coding both UT2K3 and the later promised finish up to UT for OSX?

:p

well, chose, I mean really, you had this lady who did NOTHING for the longest time.

And now you dump more on this guy, what gives?

1 person projects bite, unless they aren't games, then a person can finish it.

If you have a what 10 person staff, why only use one person?

I love Unreal Tournament OS 9!!!

I have a 17" iMac G-4 @ 800 ghz. I also have Unreal Tournament and Unreal Tournament 2003. I think I wasted my money on UT 2003 because the game runs poorly on what I consider a very solid computer. The original Unreal Tournament Game of the Year is the best game I have ever played, and it's the only one that I keep coming back to again and again. I love surfing the internet to find skins for my game. I really enjoy taking screen shots of my characters in action, and then use them on my G-4 desk top slide show. There are SO MANY CTF maps out there that a lot of really talented people made available to the general public, and I have tons of fun trying them out. So yes, if the makers of the original OS 9 Unreal Tournament make it native to OS X.3, I will be happy to pay as much as $50 to procure it. To me the cost is nothing compared to the hours of enjoyment I will get for years to come!   :) :)

I feel...or I guess I should say, felt your pain. I was trying to run UT2K3 on a 933 Quicksilver with the stock 4MX video card in it. Not fun. I upgraded my machine with OWC's Mercury Elite unit and I'm running super stable at 1.33GHz. I also found a good deal from OWC on a GeForce Ti video card. With all that and the RAM maxed out, I'm diggin' Panther and UT2K3 for an investment of about $750. Cheaper than a G5, I figure!

For the record, I finally pulled down some Mods today for UT2K3. Simple weapons stuff, but.....ummmmmm, I'm feelin' the ol UT love coming back. Jumped online tonight and.... oh yeah. The addiction is settling in again.

Glenda Adams was a bit busy with other things, such as EverQuest, which made money for Westlake.

Ryan Gordon also has to work on the paid projects first. It's better for Epic that he get the port of UT2004 finished, instead of working on UT for Mac OS X.

You also have to remember that porting rarely requires more than one person because it's a matter of getting what's already there to work properly on the other machine. With Mac OS X, it's mostly a matter of creating a library of routines to make it look as though the application is running on Windows.

I would like to see ports of many more older games to OSX. The really old games would also be nice to play once in a while. Why not build emulators right into OSX for systems such as the Apple IIgs, DOS, and Amiga?

Yeah! Then we can easily play classic games like Bilestoad!
