If the iPad 3 has the retina display *and* LTE then I will grudgingly pay the higher price. If its still 3G I might have to think about it.

The tablet market has been established for a few years now and I think that prices in general should be coming down--not going up. Then again, this is a big upgrade and that screen can't be cheap.

LOL, unfortunately I tend to agree with you.

I'll be disappointed if they up the price, it will shut out more users than bring them in, maybe the iPad 3 will be aimed at the 'pro' market and iPad 2 will get a price drop and minor spec bump?

If this rumor is true, they probably drop iPad2. We'll see. I think the iPad 2 for $399, starting, would be hot, but they need something more capable for the iPad3 (I mean more memory) if they will up price.

I was planning on buying this year, but I might wait. If they offer an iPad 2 for cheap, I'd probably buy it this year.

There will only be a price increase (meaning this rumor is true), if Apple continues selling the iPad 2.

My money is on iPad 2 and iPad 2 "HD" or some other differentiator.

I think this is supported by the similar form factor. iPad 3 is full rev and Retina display prices will have decreased due to production scaling

It would be unfortunate if this were true.

It makes a lot more sense to discount the iPad 2 prices and insert the iPad 3 at the current iPad 2 pricing.

I'm also curious why we don't have 96GB or 128 GB versions? I feel like I could never have enough storage on my iPad, especially with large cameras integrated into the device.

I wanted a retina display, but not if it meant a price increase. I do find it hard to believe that they'll move away from that $499 price point. We shall see though.

Otherwise it will be a bust.

price hike = deal breaker

A higher price is a no-go for me. If that's the case, I'm sticking with my first generation iPad. I'm not going to buy a new iPads that's drastically more expensive.

If these prices are correct, than at best I might buy a refurbished iPad 2 at $399/$419.

I can't believe Apple is going to do this, even with the retina display. If they can't keep prices down, than do not change the cameras for example.

$499 is really the maximum. It's considered expensive, but acceptable.

Really people? If the price goes up, I'm still buying.

I never understand it when people want to believe what they perceive as good things, but not what they think are bad things. In other words, this rumor should be looked at the same as other rumors. Maybe true, maybe not.

If it is 3G only, I'm out. Just don't want or need another 3 G device. But these are after all just rumours, and I can't see Apple cutting off the vast numbers of customers who only want wifi devices.

Huh?

Apple has MORE LIQUID CASH in their bank account than any other company in the world..

They will never go above $499 for the base model..... no need with all that cash..

They would rather take a loss on the tablet initially, and make it up when prices drop on parts, and also on subs from 3g data plans and app sales..

This is bad news for consumers. This is great news for investors who are watching to ensure Apple maintains margins on these incredible new products. And let's face facts, most of you would buy even if Apple charged $200 more for the new iPad. :D

I'm sure iPad 3 will be a massive success whatever the price.

I bought an iPad 2 in Jan knowing full well what was coming in March. Plan was if Apple released a 128gb iPad 3 I'd sell my old machine for the new one. Every other possible new feature is moot to me.

Guess I'm sticking with my iPad 2 for another year :).

I am starting to think that this may in fact be the Chinese price. They may have a lot more taxes (kind of like Europe) and as such the price the user pays may be $570 in China.

If you think about it, with tax, the $499 iPad costs as much as $550 already in some areas in the US (like Chicago), unless you buy online. But we think of it as $499 only because the taxes are added at the point of sale, where as in some countries (and China may be one of them) the taxes can be built into the sticker price.

I think that would be the most SENSIBLE explanation.

A $570 price point means that with tax, I'd be paying $627 for the iPad 3 16GB Wi-Fi on launch day, should I line up at an Apple store to buy it. Like I said, I have the money so its fine by me, I'm just not sure how many fence sitters will opt for a cheaper tablet somewhere else, effectively ending Apple's dominance and turning them into a niche.

Seems a bit arrogant when Amazon is running pretty effective ads that point out, if you want an e-reader and a media tablet, you can get a Kindle Touch and a Kindle Fire for less than the price of an iPad. And have no problems reading in the direct sun. Now it would be a Kindle Touch and a Kindle Fire for half the price of an iPad.

But I agree with others that this will more than likely not be the US retail price unless we're going to see an new low price for the iPad 2.

hahahaha people saying $499 is the highest price people will pay for tablets...

Umm, last i checked, $499 is the MINIMUM price for an iPad. Models go up to $829... and last I checked, those models ARE selling, so obviously people are willing to pay more than $499 for their devices.

If true that would be a pretty big head-scratcher. Too much competition to be increasing prices, even if it is "nominal" amount.

Doesn't make much sense though....so I guess we can hold judgement for another 9 days.

Agreed. This doesn't smack of good strategy when you have a dominant market position based on features, and you have such high margins. Why not squeeze the competition on the only factor they can compete with– price. Drop the iPad 2 prices $50 - $100 across the board and insert the iPad 3 into the current iPad 2 prices.

80 dollar(means 80 pound and 80 euro in apple currency) would be acceptable for sure. heck make it 100-150 dollar. but then we DEMAND 128gb, a15 CPU and 6 series powerVR GPU.
then its all good. else, competition will slip in. even when the ipad is such a great product. the price will be to high, just like macbook pro's are just out of my league.

100 billion in the bank and the still keep sticking to us. I might just wait to see what Amazon does with the 10" Fire.

Don't be too hasty. I find it hard to believe that they would raise the price on such a mainstream product. With the direction they are taking the iPads, such as the inclusion of textbooks, I would be surprised if they made them even less desirable to that demographic. Even if they don't take the iPad 2 off the market, I would imagine they would drop the price on that but keep their standard pricing model on the iPad 3s. Much as they did with the iPhone 4s, 4, and 3G.

So, it doesn't cost more to make the retina display? Or any of the other features they may include?

They are going to sell like hotcakes, no matter what the price is - just like the iPhone did when it came out.
