Wow, Apple really f******* up their nomenclature

Hire me!!

Mac - Mac Pro
iMac - iMac Pro
MacBook - MacBook Pro
iPad - iPad Pro
iPhone - iPhone Pro

Kill Air
Kill mini
Kill Plus
Kill Bill
I hate to be the guy who brings Steve jobs into it but I can’t help but feel he would have went with something like your suggestion. When he returned to apple the first thing he did was make the product lineup simpler. Why really is there a need for the iPad mini, iPad Air, iPad Pro and the iPad. All devices are so thin now I think the air is redundant and the iPad and iPad mini could simply be called the iPad but it just comes in 2 different sizes, and then they could maybe finally refresh the mini the same time as everything else as I know many who prefer a small size.

And the MacBook Air? It makes no sense now when the MacBook is thinner. Like what.

It's going to be:
iPhone Xs and iPhone XS, it's the only thing that is ****ed up enough for Apple.

They should continue with numerical numbers or start fresh with giving it a name starting with A. Adding Max would make it too long.

I like this better than Max.

Just do like cars and use the year of release.
  • 2018 iPhone
  • 2018 iPhone Pro
  • 2018 iPhone Pro 6.5”
Since they are releasing a new iPhone every year, why not?

Since they are releasing a new iPhone every year, why not?

They generally release in late September/early October, meaning for 9 months of the year they'll be selling "last year's" model. Samsung, Huawei, Xiaomi etc would all release their 2019 phones on January 1st with accompanying "this year's best" fanfare/promotion.

Skipping 9 just like Windows, eh?

I miss when the naming scheme was more simple :( Apple's product line is getting as convoluted as HP's. (Slight exaggeration).

Huge exaggeration hahahahahaha

Like the
HP ZBOOK x2
EliteBook x360 Series
HP OMEN 15
HP PAVILION x360
HP ProBook 440 G5

all products that are on sale right now,

Apple has a lot to do to make it as complicated

Can anyone clarify what will happen to “Day 1 iPhone X” (D1iX) purchasers on the upgrade program?

My biggest concern (which I hope someone can explain) is the fact that the Keynote falls on a Wednesday, Sept 12th and when all of D1iX purchasers realize they have to pay 2 additional months to Citizens One Bank so that they can upgrade, the payment will not process till Thursday, Sept 13th and not possibly update until pre-order day, Friday, Sept 14th, leaving thousands panicking and/or pissed.

Should we just go ahead and pay our 2 months advance now?

I have another hot topic that hopefully someone can write up or research more: iPhone 7 Upgrade Program paying 14 months of payments, just to turn in the iPhone 7 to upgrade the iPhone X, and now having to pay an additional 2 months and trading in the iPhone X just to upgrade to the iPhone XS. Does that sound right to you? The Day 1 customers on the upgrade program are paying way more overall because of Apple’s own manufacturing woes. Essentially, Apple could purposely delay production for a month and collect an extra month of payment (would equal to millions for Apple), just to get our iPhone trade-in to refurbish and resell themselves.

If you look at the iPhone Upgrade Program as the leasing program it is (like a car) they essentially are giving a contracted valuation of your phone at certain times of your lease. Technically, after 12 months of payment, your phone’s value equals to 50% of the purchased price—Apple will pay off the remainder of the balance upon receiving your device in an expected condition.

I.E. With the iPhone 7 (128gb) , I made payments of $36.58 for 14 months (Sept 2016 - Oct 2017) totalling $438.96, so technically the value of my iPhone 7 on Dec 2017 was approximately $211 ($649-monthly payments) aka the payoff.

Nov 2017 I turn in my iPhone 7 to get the iPhone X (128gb), and pay $56.16 for 10 months, totalling 561.60. I now have to pay an additional $112.32, in order to preorder the iPhone XS. The value of my iPhone X is technically $674.

So in actuality, I got screwed by Apple for 2 additional months of payment for the iPhone 7 and now I have to pay an additional 2 months just to order the iPhone XS.

Ok, I just went down a deep rabbit hole, but it’s late for me so I’m not going to reread what I wrote and hopefully it makes sense to someone. I’ll reread and edit tomorrow. Unless someone can put it into better words for me. Thanks.

I understand yours (and others) feelings on this. But as I understand the upgrade program, it allows people to get a new phone every year, that’s every 12 months. There’s nothing that says people are entitled to the newest phone the day of release. Unfortunately the projected day of ordering is before twelve months have passed.
The upgrade customers can still get the newest phone, but they have to wait the twelve months out.
Deciding whether to pony up the money just to get the latest and greatest before the contract timing is up is a personal decision for these folks.

This is all moot though, as we have no idea yet how Apple will handle this.

Perhaps Apple has some Machavelian (sp?) scheme in place. They’re 2 months behind in manufacturing so by making upgrade customers wait two more months to fulfill (to meet contract), they’ll be able to fill new orderers first, then play catch up for the upgrade people . It’s all guesswork.

I’m still holding out hope this name was nixed. The 9to5Mac report didn’t say it was a for sure thing just that it was a possibility.

A hint that Apple is ready to enter the antiperspirant/deodorant market?

Microsoft attempted to and failed.

Seriously, the naming scheme has really gone crazy if this is true. It could have been so simple.
  • iPhone (6.1” LCD)
  • iPhone Pro 5.8” (OLED)
  • iPhone Pro 6.5” (OLED)
Done. Super simple and nicely mirrors the iPad line with both an entry level and a “Pro” level that comes in multiple screen sizes.

i partly agree its nice to version the product. Same model (in terms of screen size and display tech) next year would be confusing.

Wouldn't be surprised, their naming department is all over the place with naming the stuff, except for Mac OS X, the one thing with consistent naming.
not really it was OSX and now its MacOS

How on earth is iPhone Xs Max any less of a mouthful than iPhone Xs Plus?

I was really hoping Apple would decide this year to finally abandon their increasingly cumbersome iPhone numbering scheme. Instead it looks like they’re going to make it worse!

Do we really need to call it "Max" Plus" "XL" or anything else.... can't we just see that the dang thing is bigger!?! I have the greatest name ever for it.... "iPhone". Maybe something to reference the year. Because if iPhone X was meant to be the 10th generation, then what the hell is XS? Is that generation 999,999,990 (Assuming S is 1 billion in roman numerals.... I made that up).

The issue with the Max name for me is my association with good battery life from previous "Max" phones. I mean, I am all for an iPhone with great battery, but let's be honest...

The naming scheme does need some tweaking.

I saw someone mentioned a year type naming scheme earlier, I thought that worked well.

2018 iPhone

2018 iPhone Pro

2018 iPhone Pro X

Just my two cents :)

Yes, a schema with the year in it is best. I just want to remind everyone that the 6,7,8,9,X thing can't go on forever. Otherwise some day you will have iPhone 29.
