There are 120Hz TVs on the market, which people generally buy for gaming purposes and use with the latest Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 consoles...
*snort* Yeah, that's why 120hz TVs exist. Let's ignore that 120hz has been a thing for many years before these consoles existed, and that 24 (as in frames per second) divides into 120 evenly. People are totally going for these TV sets for their gaming, and not watching movies without judder or a soap-opera effect added.

I have been hoping for this. I have my Apple TV set to match frame rate, to avoid the 3:2 pulldown on 24fps movies and such. This means when playing something like a movie, the Apple TV has to switch between 60fps and 24fps. So, the screen goes black for a couple seconds. Not a very smooth transition. If the ATV can output 120fps, that is divisible by 24. No black screen switching and no 3:2 pulldown. I already have a TV that will support it. Please Apple do this. :)
If Apple weren’t too interested in getting the A14X cpu for an AppleTV they could take up the A12z from an imminently to be discontinued iPad Pro 2020 if they are going to treat the appleTv 6 an A12z based 120hz streaming box.

I dare say it would be equally acceptable if Apple priced the box accordingly.

Either way you’d imagine that such a release would be very interesting for the Epic trial as a negotiating point if Apple are indeed going to release an inexpensive console device.

hey, i apologize for this off topic question, but could someone tell me what the reasons to get the apple tv vs. simply using the apple tv app would be? i think there are some, but i can't remember. don't care about apple arcade, should that be one of them. thanks in advance!

Apple TV app vs. Apple TV box

With the Apple TV app on your smart TV or third party streaming device, you can access:

With the Apple TV box, you can additionally get

  • A choice of 12,000+ apps from the tvOS App Store, including streaming services that may not (yet) be available on some other platforms
  • Integration of some of these streaming services apps into the Apple TV app
  • iTunes Extras (bonus content for iTunes Store movies) for titles that have this feature
  • Home Sharing (local network) movies, tv shows, music, photos, home videos, podcasts, audiobooks
  • AirPlay streaming from devices to the Apple TV box [Some smart TVs may support this as well]
  • Apple Music on TV [Some smart TVs may support this as well]
  • Photos from iCloud
  • Apple Podcasts
  • Games, individual apps or Apple Arcade line of games subscription
  • Siri voice assistant for TV, where available
  • HomeKit hub smart devices integration
  • Beautifully paced aerial screen savers (a selection from near 100 randomized clips)
  • Personal photo screen saver option through iCloud Photos or Home Sharing
  • Apple Fitness+
The ATV4K can supply a lot of missing apps or better interface to using them is its strong point.

There are some interesting tvOS apps that are not games. Unfortunately developers are not interested in making more tvOS apps because it's a very niche market. Also the Apple TV Remote can be very frustrating to use, so the app experience is not very good in some cases.

Where the Apple TV excels is the user interface. It's much better than a built-in TV interface or another TV device such as Roku or Amazon Fire. Also it works seamlessly with iCloud so you can easily access any content you have purchased on the iTunes Store, Podcasts, etc.

Wow, it looks like my 2016 LG OLED 65E6P TV purchased before the Summer Olympics would support the refresh rate of 120 hz!

thank you! yes, i've used my wife's 2nd or 3rd edition and hated the remote too, but it wasn't until the 4k that they introduced some of the features that i could've actually used... thanks for your response!

They should do this along with revamping the remote for the apple tv 4k successor, but what they should also really do is create a new, budget sku akin to a Chromecast or something that comes sans remote and acts purely as an airplay receiver.

Cheaper streaming devices from Roku and most sold smart TVs today support airplay2 and AppleTV+ App; It's time for Apple build it's own cheaper single SOC based HDMI plug-in streaming device and let the current AppleTV box to go unless Apple has plan for M1 based massive multi-core CPU/GPU console that completes well against XBOX X and PS5.

This. I’ve not used either of my ATVs since upgrading to a smart TV with the built in Atv app.

Most smart tvs offer the streaming apps you find on Rokus that make their boxes and HDMI plugins not worth the money. AppleTV boxes - with upgraded hardware and the TVOS app ecosystem that also act as a homekit hub and offers gaming is a much more compelling offering and worth the premium.

Yea, that why it falls in the “other” category in the sales statistics...
Btw, I own 2 4K units...

I didn't mention anything about sales - I was discussing its difference in value - I use my ATV everyday for most of my tv viewing and run my homekit stuffon it too.

I keep hearing people say this, but gods, the interface on my Smart TV (Samsung, from just last year!) is just so terrible. It's laggy and kind of slow, and doesn't even look all that nice.

Meanwhile my Apple TV is fast and smooth, everything loads instantly and it's just a VASTLY better experience overall. And with HDMI CEC controlling the TV and receiver I don't even have to mess with any other remotes; the ATV remote does it all.

I’m glad it does what it does for you, I’m satisfied with it too.
But, if that value add would mean anything to the standard consumer, it would not be in the “other” category, therefor, it’s a niche product. And that is fine, but that will not help Apple to get to the next level

iOS betas have been a treasure trove of upcoming Apple TV.

A couple of years ago, it referenced A12 or faster processor. Last year, it referenced a new remote control. On this beta, the Siri Remote has been renamed to Apple TV Remote and it is now strongly hinting HDMI 2.1.

The only thing missing? New Apple TV hardware itself. Apple is just trolling us.
Why on earth would Apple troll that they’re making a future version of a product that already exists?
Do you think they’re purposely trying to hurt current Apple TV sales?
Or maybe, they’re actually developing a new Apple TV, and it’s just not ready for the public yet.
