Yes , the atv 4k is still an amazing device , the gaming sucks but apart from that it's a stunner

I've stopped watching normal tv now and just use my atv all day long for Youtube Premium etc

I have been hoping for this. I have my Apple TV set to match frame rate, to avoid the 3:2 pulldown on 24fps movies and such. This means when playing something like a movie, the Apple TV has to switch between 60fps and 24fps. So, the screen goes black for a couple seconds. Not a very smooth transition. If the ATV can output 120fps, that is divisible by 24. No black screen switching and no 3:2 pulldown. I already have a TV that will support it. Please Apple do this. :)
Hope this is the case. Sometimes my TV takes several seconds and I have to rewind if I miss some opening dialog. It flickers a bunch and it's jarring each time. This seems like the best reason for this to me.

As for actual 120Hz content, don't see much use for it. I guess if it makes the UI smoother? But otherwise even on my PS5 and Xbox Series X there is no game that runs at 4K 120Hz. And I don't see much use for a 120Hz movie. But I think the drone screensavers would be pretty cool at 4K 120Hz HDR.

I was thinking of getting an Apple TV to get 4K HDR on all my streaming subscriptions (I have a desktop display, not a smart TV), but in this case I'll wait for the updated version.

WOW! I hope RUKU ULTRA goes 120hz?
I LOVE MY ROKU. The variety is unmatched

although quite a few 4k TV sets are still only 60hz and not 120hz

120hz costs quite a bit more in a 4k TV.

I agree that Apple TV 4K needs an update really soon. But at the same time it’s also fascinating that a 4 y.o smart tv box can pretty much compete and do anything which modern smart TVs need (anything besides 120Hz and VRR).

I have ATV 4K for my living room, plugged into my 1080p 65” plasma TV and honestly I’m still amazed by it. Great pictures and sound. I don’t think I really “need” any upgrade anytime soon. It was ahead of its time.

Now compare that to a 2-3 years old smart TVs that barely getting any OS updates from the manufacturer.

I have my ATV set to Match Frame Rate. Otherwise, some apps have choppy playback on my Samsung TV.
The downside is the screen goes black when switching apps and the TV feels the need to announce the new resolution. Every single time.

At this point my ATV has zero advantages over the Android setup box from my cable provider for me. Even the “smooth interface” has become a mute point.

Exactly! From a 144 Hz monitor here, watching a movie while working, it can give me a headache. I understand the appeal for gaming but everything else I feel like 120 Hz is just overplayed as the next consumer thing.
yeah no. we have displays that well exceed 144hz now, and tv's that do native 120hz. one of the top gaming "monitors" to buy is the 48" lg cx.

this is far from overplayed.

How do u tell if ur hdmi is 2.1 or 2.0? Even the specs on my tv don’t tell me that
If your TV doesn’t say then there is 99% chance it doesn’t support it. Manufacturers don’t go to the cost of building with a 2.1 interface and then not shout about it!

*snort* Yeah, that's why 120hz TVs exist. Let's ignore that 120hz has been a thing for many years before these consoles existed, and that 24 (as in frames her second) divides into 120 evenly. People are totally going for these TV sets for their gaming, and not watching movies without judder or a soap-opera effect added.
For smooth 24p playback, only the TV has to support 120 Hz. The box doesn't.
In fact, the TV doesn't have to support 120 Hz. It can just support 48Hz or 24Hz.
And 120 fps gaming has existed long before the release of the latest consoles.

That’s what I was awaiting for since I’m already planning to buy a new TV 120Hz capable (potentially a LG C15 series).

120hz means clearest image would be possible without sync issues or flickering. (Which 60hz high mode suffers from) this test image is from the LGCX.

I don’t see a new Apple TV going toe to toe with the new PS5/Xbox. But it could compete with last gen and Nintendo very well. Specially if they are allowed to keep the different controller support and would allow game streaming on it. And do an Apple Arcade Plus that brought a lot more big name games to it. Like Diablo 4 or Immortals or anything else that would run well on it. I know they need to probably move into METEL 3 and add more functions that compete with DX12/Vulcan, though there are some things metal just destroys them on. Another plus would be, people could get decent game graphics and not have to deal with the FAN NOISE! 🤫
Though, I know people complain about the current remote, I personally enjoy it and IMO it’s better than the remote LG ships with their TVs.

Sounds awesome for gaming, but it's one of those things where if you're loyal to how a director wants to portray their film, 120Hz won't matter much. Still should be interesting if you're interested in "Soap Opera Effect".
120 hz is useful only for gaming.

Apple are always late to the party then end up owning the whole thing , if I was Sony and Ms i'd be very worried now

I've got a ps5 and tbh its a big meh , had the x box and sent it back after a week of hdmi problems , while my atv 4k just purrs away silently , totally reliable , never an issue ( apart from that remote )

If Apple really do it properly this time , they will be unstoppable
Sony is successful because of their stellar first party, third person narrative action adventure games. Those aren’t really easy to develop and apple hasnt ever proven itself to be competent gaming company in the past. I don’t think Phil Spencer or Jim Ryan should be breaking a sweat any time soon.
