Squared off edges won't reduce the thickness of the bezels.

I suppose I should have been more accurate with my words, but I have been loosely referring to the bezel as any part of the phone between where the screen stops and the phone itself ends. And for what it's worth, I realize that one could not simply put today's iPhones on a belt sander or whatever to flatten out the rounded edges and end up with a slightly smaller phone that still maintains structural integrity. But, it is nevertheless possible that a clean sheet design, flat sided enclosure could itself contribute to a slightly smaller profile.

In order for the 5.4" iPhone to be "similar" in size to iPhone SE, the bezels would need to be thinner than anything available on the market today.

As I said in my first post in this thread and others have mentioned as well, the language "similar" is too imprecise to draw firm conclusions like that from. The fact of that matter is that it is linguistically correct to say that the iPhone Pro and iPhone Pro Max are "similar" in size. As such, I'd suggest there's more value in running numbers based on prevailing rumors such as the 5.4" screen size and possible increase in screen-to-body ratio based on what's plausible (i.e. what has been done by other phone vendors) than there is in comparing to existing phones based on subjective terminology.

Given what we are hearing from insiders, it is safe to say that most of us can at least agree at this point that the 5.4" "iPhone 12" will be between the iPhone SE and iPhone 8 (or, if one prefers, the new low cost iPhone rumored for March, assuming that is sized like the 8 as widely expected). Exactly where it lands in between the two leaves room for speculation and debate. But again, if we believe an iPhone with a smaller screen than 5.8" is coming, then we also believe Apple recognizes and is prepared to acknowledge there is a market for a smaller phone. It would seem to make the most sense that they've chosen a screen size only so large that it allows the device to feel like a suitably compact phone to those who've avoided not just the iPhone X/XS/11Pro but also the iPhone 6/7/8 due to the inconvenient size. That would hit what by all appearances is the sweet spot in the small device market. We shall see later this year if this is the case.

5.4” model is gonna be an enormous seller.
It's what I'm in market for I think. I have a 6s+, and having handled a iPhone 8 recently it made me miss the smaller form factor. But, having a screen size similar to mine, in a small body sounds about perfect. (I want the better double cameras that will hopefully come with this, and I want 256gig ). For around $800, that's a week three buy for me (after I see reviews).

why is it so ****ing hard for apple to make a small phone? guess im still staying on my SE
I like the larger ones but 6.7!?! How big will they go?? I think my Pro Max is about as big as I would want to go, especially pockets wise.

Except for the extra tall aspect ratio that is useless 90% of the time, but bigger in your pocket 100% of the time.
Exactly. That's the whole reason I passed on X. I didn't like it on SG8+ either. I prefer wider so the text is bigger.

Since when is what Apple are deciding to do 'proof' of what more people want?! I never hear people these days say they want a larger phone ,quite the contrary, there is always a strong call for a choice of small phone once again... with a chassis the size of the iPhone 5.

I don't agree at all... it's simply the only CHOICE people have these days. If they brought out an iPhone 5 size phone but with an edge to edge screen it would be a HUGE seller.
And this is the exact reason they would avoid it. People buy the 800+ because they're the only choice. If there is suddenly a 400-500 range, people will buy those instead of the higher ones. Although, profit would be the bigger factor than the price. Lower with about the same profit could be good if it pulls other OS people over to Apple with the lower pricing.

I love my SE and I love the 4" screen. It suits for all the things I do with my phone. If I want a bigger display, I use my iPad.

If I was in control, I would build a bezel less 4" phone with the SE metal frame around it and call it "iPhone elite". No notch, no protruding cam.

Japanese site Mac Otakara today shared a somewhat confusing rumor about Apple's 2020 iPhone lineup, suggesting the 5.4-inch iPhone that Apple is working on will be sized similarly to the iPhone 8.

Citing Apple suppliers exhibiting at CES, Mac Otakara says that Apple "might be developing Face ID models beside Touch ID models as an updated version of iPhone 8."

fouriphones2020-800x572.jpg

This confusingly seems to refer to the low-cost "iPhone SE 2" or iPhone 8 successor Apple has in development, but a further mention of the 5.4-inch iPhone with Face ID suggests that it actually refers to the higher-end 5.4-inch device rumored for the fall of 2020.Prior rumors have indicated that Apple is working on devices in multiple sizes for its flagship 2020 iPhone lineup, including a 5.4-inch iPhone, a 6.1-inch iPhone (or two devices in this size, based on one rumor), and a 6.7-inch iPhone.

Mac Otakara says that the 5.4-inch iPhone will have an iPhone 7 body size and a rear camera that's "much bigger compared to iPhone 8." By using the TrueDepth camera system and eliminating the Home button, the display's active area measures in at 5.4 inches, though the device's size will be similar to the iPhone 8.

The iPhone 8 (and the iPhone 7) features a 4.7-inch display along with thick top and bottom bezels that provide room for the front-facing camera and the Home button. By eliminating the bezels, Apple can offer a larger display in a smaller body. The 5.4-inch iPhone will be the smallest iPhone Apple has offered since the 2017 iPhone 8.

There are mixed iPhone rumors right now, but in a nutshell, it seems that Apple will release four to five new iPhones in 2020. The first will come in the spring of 2020 and will be an "iPhone SE 2" or iPhone 8 successor is meant to be a low-cost iPhone with Touch ID and a single-lens camera. This iPhone won't have Face ID and will continue to have thick top and bottom bezels.

In the fall, Apple will introduce three or four new flagship iPhones in 5.4, 6.1, and 6.7-inch size options, and these iPhones will feature edge-to-edge displays, 5G connectivity, multi-lens cameras, and more. Early rumors suggested we should expect three iPhones in the fall of 2020, but a JPMorgan analyst recently said there could potentially be two 6.1-inch iPhones, a prediction that was quickly corroborated by noted analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

Apple's 2020 fall lineup will be similar to the 2019 iPhone lineup, with iPhones available at multiple price points starting at around $700, while the rumored early 2020 iPhone 8 successor could be priced as low as $399.

Flagship phone at 5.5 inch. This will be close to unique and nitch market for Apple. :) after owning an ipad, i want a smaller iphone.

Because you don't hear people saying it means they don't want it? Exhibit A are iPhone sales since iPhone 6....proving people want larger screens.

Small screens are niche.

Displays have gotten bigger by shrinking the bezels. The footprint of Pro Max is about the same as the 6/6s/7/8 Plus models, so iPhones haven't really gotten any bigger since 2014.

I'm a year into owning an iPhone 8 and I still think it feels big. I'm male, six feet tall with hands proportionate to that, and I still find myself awkwardly shifting the phone around to balance it in my hand. And the X-series phones are larger still!

I'm in the same boat. I went from an iPhone 4s to an iPhone 6 nearly 2 years ago and I still haven't adjusted. I'm tempted to get an iPhone SE or even an iPhone 5s off eBay.

I'm probably in the minority, but for me it's more about screen size than the physical dimensions of the phone (though both matter). I felt the 4" screen size was perfect (for my use).

People obviously do want it and yet it doesn't exist.
Sure, some people want it. But how many? That’s the key.

5 or even 10 million is in the noise when you’re selling upwards of 200 million iPhones. Doesn’t move the needle in the slightest. Kuo predicts SE2 could sell 30 million, based on the kinds of preliminary orders his supply chain sources are being told to expect.

Given a choice of a 4.0” phone at $400 or a 4.7” phone at $400. Most would gladly take the 4.7”. (Not you and other 4.0” phone fans, of course.)

If Apple could sell a 5.5” for $400, they likely wouldn’t make a 4.7” “SE2” at all. But the best they can do right now is 4.7. A few years from now the “SE3” might well be 5.5” (the old Plus size).

You might reconsider getting 5.1” iPhone 12 for better portabilityView attachment 888552
There’s a 5.1” iPhone 12? Who told you that?

Not sure why this is so confusing for people.
iPhone 9 and 9+, $399/$499
iPhone 12 and 12+: $699/$799
iPhone 12Pro and 12Pro Max: $999/$1099
The confusing part is six phones. I don’t think there’s any chance of Apple expanding from three to six models this year, but who knows? However, nobody has said that afaik.

It won’t really be a flagship, since it won’t have the triple camera or the time of flight sensor. Other differences no doubt from the $1,000+ flagships. It’ll be around $700 I would think.

re: size, the 5.42 is tiny compared to iPad 😂

I still have my SE around as a utility device, and honestly it's fine. I sometimes wonder about my decision to go to the 8. The 8 is faster, has way better speakers, way better camera, and the touch ID is a bit quicker. I still miss the headphone jack, though. A true iPhone SE with an edge-to-edge screen would be my perfect iPhone, for sure.

It didn’t sell like they thought it would. Not at $399, and not even when they dropped the price to $349. People wanted a bigger iPhone, even if they had to pay a lot more to get it. Turns out people did want small phones. But very few. Not enough. Cancelled, dead, buried.

Why can’t people understand that? Apple thought it would sell sufficiently well and it didn’t. So it was discontinued, like Xserve, AirPort, Time Capsule, 2013 Mac Pro, Thunderbolt Display, 12” MacBook, etc. It happens; they can’t all be winners.
[automerge]1579003554[/automerge]

It’s not hard at all. They made the SE. But few wanted it, and it was discontinued.
Go look at the numbers on Statista. I suspect they sold at least 40-50 million SE’s. Possibly even changed their ASP enough they did not want to sell it anymore. And let’s be real, it was never meant to be a flagship.

It's pointless to investigate whether there is a "market" for an SE-sized iPhone to explain why there isn't currently one for sale at that size. All I really care about is whether I want the phone, and whether it exists.

A year or so ago, before rumors of a new SE, I was even wondering if I wanted to continue using a smartphone at all. On privacy concerns, Android is not an option. I thought of the possibility of having a phone that I found too large to use comfortably (and too slippery to grip safely without a case that would make it even larger). If my interactions with this piece of tech are made significantly less enjoyable...do I want to continue subjecting myself to that tech?

If you'd asked me a year ago, I probably would have said that I'll just replace the battery in my current SE, and ride it out until it dies...and not buy another smart phone to replace it. I'm on the fence on it currently. But when it comes time to make the decision, it won't matter if anyone else wants such a phone. I represent 100% of the market of me, and that's all I care about when it's my money being plunked down on the barrelhead.
