Not everyone wants a huge phone and not everyone wants to spend $700+. I fit in the first category and will be getting one, but then would also get the 5.4" in September if it ends up being even smaller.
People interested in the G8 are not interested in iOS and vice-versa.

Evolution of the smartphone market, which has been trending towards larger models for some time.

I would not be surprised if the original SE was 4" because it leveraged the existing 4" production process which allowed Apple to hit the $399 price point while still making their desired margin. I fully expect it is the same with this "SE2", but the production process is now 4.7" instead of 4".

Making it smaller would actually increase the production cost because Apple no longer has that production process. For those who continue to use the SE first and foremost because it is 4" might very well pay a higher price for an update in that form factor, but they are a small(er) part of the general smartphone market so Apple is going 4.7" to appeal to the larger portion of that market who prefer / desire a larger phone.

Or, people don’t buy small iPhones because none are available. Claiming market forces is like saying people want Apple’s new keyboard design because for the past few years that’s the only type they have purchased.

iOS is in higher demand than iPad OS. Your pricing is only your opinion. Apple charges what people will pay.

Weird. I wonder why Apple is moving towards phones designed for iPadOS if iOS is in higher demand.

For some it was size, for some it was price, for some it was both. And for some it was probably more about familiarity than specific size (i.e. if the iPhone 5(S) had been 5", they would have upgraded to a same size SE).

I'm in the size group, but it is a small group. Even Android with its diverse hardware does not bother with this group. Sony was the last bigger brand with a compact phone. One would think small phone lovers would have flocked to Sony, and maybe they did, but it must have been a small flock, as Sony discontinued that line despite its "monopoly".

Most in the size group probably settle for something bigger when the options become limited; the die-hards who absolutely insist on 4" are too few. While I think Apple could make a profitable 4" iPhone, they can probably count on most of those customers settling for 4.7" when that is all there is.
I bet if they made a 4” iPhone the only option these XL MaX+ customers would buy it because it’s the only option with iOS. Then we could say, see!, people prefer smaller phones again.

consumers don’t need to have the latest technology, especially when they want a smaller form factor.

There was a time when smaller hardware told you it was the latest technology.

So when fall rolls around the line up will likely be
iPhone 9 (?) $399 A13 64 GB LTE LCD
iPhone XR $499 A12 64 GB LTE LCD
iPhone 11 $599 A13 64 GB LTE LCD
iPhone 12, 5.4 inch $699 A14 64 GB 5G OLED
iPhone 12, 6.1 inch $799 A14 64 GB 5G OLED
iPhone 12 Pro, 6.1 inch $999 A14 128 GB 5G OLED ToF camera
iPhone 12 Pro Max, 6.7 inch $1099 A14 128 GB 5G OLED ToF camera

This looks to have something for everyone at a range of great price points. Perhaps Apple will drop the iPhone XR and jump from the $399 iPhone 9 to the $599 iPhone 11, but I doubt it.
Hard to say if they will keep the XR another year at that price point as Apple may want to reserve FaceID for $599+ for now. I could see it going either way, but otherwise that lineup looks about right to me (with regular 12s getting 4 GB of RAM and the 12 Pros getting 6 GB of RAM).

Starting at $399 you can get in-display fingerprint, OLED and FHD for the Android Smartphone made by Samsung. The $399 iPhone doesn't have any of that features.
Aaaand, you'll get one Android update about a year after it is released, and a SOC comparable to a 5 year old iPhone. Enjoy!

Hope new SE carries a headphone jack otherwise Pixel 4a will beat it.
Unlikely - Apple is making a lot off their Airpods and Beats lineup and they would like that to continue.

Genuine question, why does it matter that a phone has a headphone jack? Using a dongle is easy enough, and wireless headphones undeniably provide more comfort when you're on the go.
The only scenario I can imagine this is an issue is if you want to charge your phone and listen to music. To me though, this is a non issue since playing music drains so little battery that I can just charge my phone for 10 minutes and listen to music for 3+ hours out of that charge.

Genuine question, why does it matter that a phone has a headphone jack?
Two primary use cases:

1. Using the phone in the car - I have an older car without bluetooth (but with an aux input) and I plug in my 6S for GPS and music/podcasts while driving. There are NO high quality adapters on the market that provide 3.5mm input and charging. The Belkin one is low quality (see all the reviews about it breaking after some number of months), and the only alternatives are even worse quality. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong and there's a high quality adapter out there.

2. I have tons of wired headphones that sound better than airpods and don't need to be charged and I don't want to have to find a dongle to use them. I guess I can fork out the $9 per pair of headphones to buy a dongle each and semi-permanently attach it to the headphones but that's something else that could fail, get lost, etc.

Losing the headphone jack is the primary thing that keeps me from enthusiastically waiting for the SE2/9 announcement.

Edit: forgot to mention, the DAC in the third-party adapters that I have tried have terrible sound quality. The DAC in my 6S is great.

Does (did) the Sony run iOS?

Low Price. Haha... Apple does not do low price! don't be suckers. it will have half the specs of the iPhone 8 and also have a low-quality Display, yes I am sure there are some fanboys who will go buy it because mummy and daddy's money is their money...

Yeah, I think $599 is the floor for a FaceID model. I don’t see much possibility of the XR staying around. I don’t think the Pros necessarily get 128GB base storage either, could be a 2021 thing.

hafta disagree. price has nothing to do with SE appeal. it's all about size.

Introducing a budget iPhone is fine and I'm sure there's a market for it, but is unrelated to introducing a reasonably-sized iPhone (3.5-4"). Give ppl their budget iPhone at whatever size, and then give the rest of us a 4" iPhone with flagship internals (but NO face ID) somewhere in the $700-1000 range. Actually, to get a new 4" phone I'd pay more than that.
I doubt Apple could sell more than a few million 4” iPhones at $700+. The iPhone “SE2” is projected at 20-30 million first year sales.

You might think 3.5-4.0” is reasonably sized, but it’s small in today’s marketplace. Most people want a larger phone than that. I don’t see how flagship tech fits in a 4” iPhone in any case.

Thanks for the reply! The car situation absolutely makes sense, however I sort of disagree about your second point. AFAIK, the dongle Apple makes is actually as good, if not better quality than the onboard DAC of previous iPhones. Here's a good reddit post where people discuss this: www.reddit.com/r/headphones/comments/bauipn/iphone_dongle_audio_quality/

And in addition, even if the audio quality is worse — is the difference that apparent when listening to music during transit etc? That is my primary use case with headphones + iPhone. If I'm at home, I'm not going to use my headphones to stream Spotify on my iPhone, I'll connect my headphones to my MacBook and listen to lossless files stored on it...

Yep, you could certainly be right about Pros getting 64 GB base storage. That's actually enough for most people if they don't keep a large music collection or a bunch of photos/videos on their phone.

Yeah, when will Mercedes make cars with round headlights again? When are they going to realize not everyone wants cars with these amorphous slithers as headlights? We also want a handbrake between the front seats.

Except we do prefer handbrake between the seats.

What’s the betting this affordable price signals the return of 16gb storage for the base models?
$399 seems to reasonable for Apple. One thing is for sure, they’ll find a way to cripple it for that price. Hope I’m wrong.

It's the same price the iPhone SE started at, and they haven't done 16GB in years now... I think they want a slice of the mid-range market. I imagine more people would buy a $399 iPhone than a $250 Huawei, Xiaomi, ... The phone market has changed over the years and Apple probably needs to have a new lower-end option for customers.

Hope it doesn't come with an embarrassing near 720p display considering the upcoming $249 Moto G8 Power has 6.4" FHD+, 4GB/64GB, 5000mAh battery, mask friendly fingerprint authentication, etc.

for $399 I would not expect much...

I could see them putting 32 GB base storage at the $399 price point (which would match pricing & storage of the "refreshed" SE), but I don't see 16 GB returning to iPhones or iPads...

That is a shocker, yes it's been reported to be at $399, however, I was thinking it would be $449 or $499. Watch it be $399 with only 32GB of storage and $499 for 128GB of storage...
You say "only" as if that matters to the people buying the cheapest iPhone available.

You’re wrong 🙂 The 8 that the new “SE2” will replace is 64GB, and it sells for $449. I could see 32GB this year bumping to 64 next year, like they did with the first SE.

But imo there’s zero chance of a 16GB iPhone anymore, just as there’s no chance of a 4” display.

Parts bin phone. Budget or not, it's a 6 year old industrial design that should be retired already. Make something new, Tim, that doesn't necessarily have to be a wallet-breaking flagship, for the love of Steve.
