The SE's main appeal was you got the compete performance of an iPhone 6s for a much lower price ...

hafta disagree. price has nothing to do with SE appeal. it's all about size.

Introducing a budget iPhone is fine and I'm sure there's a market for it, but is unrelated to introducing a reasonably-sized iPhone (3.5-4"). Give ppl their budget iPhone at whatever size, and then give the rest of us a 4" iPhone with flagship internals (but NO face ID) somewhere in the $700-1000 range. Actually, to get a new 4" phone I'd pay more than that.

I feel like it should be smaller. The difference in size between an iPhone 8 and a iPhone X is negligible. I just made the change and they’re practically the same—you have to go back to iPhone 5 for an actual small phone.

And on cost, you can now get a used iPhone X for $400 cash, which feels like a better deal than this SE2 on contract.

I think this will be my wife’s next phone. She currently has an SE, but what was fine for me once is now annoying: her screen is just too damn small! She’ll be all over that price point.

I would buy this if it had 4gb ram. But Apple is penny pinching here. They are already using the longer-than-5 year old chasis to save cost and this phone is unlikely to be updated within the next four years.

So buy x or something

For some it was size, for some it was price, for some it was both. And for some it was probably more about familiarity than specific size (i.e. if the iPhone 5(S) had been 5", they would have upgraded to a same size SE).

I'm in the size group, but it is a small group. Even Android with its diverse hardware does not bother with this group. Sony was the last bigger brand with a compact phone. One would think small phone lovers would have flocked to Sony, and maybe they did, but it must have been a small flock, as Sony discontinued that line despite its "monopoly".

Most in the size group probably settle for something bigger when the options become limited; the die-hards who absolutely insist on 4" are too few. While I think Apple could make a profitable 4" iPhone, they can probably count on most of those customers settling for 4.7" when that is all there is.

Whilst I don't disagree at all with your sentiment, the cold reality (for you) is that the market for such a device must now be so vanishingly small that to design, develop and tool for production whilst still making a profit on each unit would mean you'd have to pay extortionate sums of money for one. Of course, that may change in the future, but right now the trend is for ever-increasing screen size. Sadly, market forces have killed the 4" phone. And for the time being at least, there's no sign of it being resurrected.

Hope it doesn't come with an embarrassing near 720p display considering the upcoming $249 Moto G8 Power has 6.4" FHD+, 4GB/64GB, 5000mAh battery, mask friendly fingerprint authentication, etc.
You go and buy a Moto GB Power, and then you can post on MotoRumors.com as much as you like.

You do realize the XR's screen has more pixels than the one on the 8? And this new phone will likely use that exact same screen...
People comparing about "crappy" screens wouldn't even be able to see the difference.

Depending on what the smaller iPhone 12 brings, the 128 version of this may well be my next phone this fall. We'll just have to see price difference and camera difference (I want night mode).
Yeah. I personally will buy the SE2 and then wait for the next notchless iPhone. I am guessing iPhone 12 will still have a notch.

Starting at $399 you can get in-display fingerprint, OLED and FHD for the Android Smartphone made by Samsung. The $399 iPhone doesn't have any of that features.
This is a phone for people who prefer iOS to Android but don't care about these 'features' like OLED or FHD or even in display fingerprint as they love the home button.

I think iOS alone is worth that price as it's so much better than Android.

I used to get newest coolest versions of the phones, but now I’ve been rocking the 6s for a good long while. this “SE2” seems like a good fit for me. I don’t need a great camera, or a big screen anymore. Phones now are like computers, I used to care about the latest hardware, but my 2013 MBP is rocking fine. Guess Im getting old.

Apple can make iPhone SE that is full screen and doesn't have a FaceID or front-facing camera and people will buy it instead of releasing iPhone 8s.

I have an iPhone 8 as my backup/travel phone. Otherwise, I would be all over this. I still may be, depending upon the final price and internals.

I think it's a good move by Apple. Get an cheap(er) phone and draw even more people into their ecosystem.

How could they make a full screen without FaceID (which Im not a fan of either)? Put TouchID on the back or not have it either? That would be awful.

I'll probably buy one for my parents - get them away from their dreaded old Samsung phone!

I bet the Moto doesn’t run iOS.
Plus, this low cost iPhone won’t be aimed to pixel peep bandwagon.

This is a complete failure. Why doesn't Apple make a 4 inch phone?

The 5.4” model should be about $749. OLED, dual cam, 5G, slightly smaller than 6/7/8.

I hope my current SE will survive until then. The new SE definitely will be no option because of the phablet form factor. I don't care about the price.

Of course Apple can make full-screen SE without faceID for $399 and there are option to put in-display touchID.

So when fall rolls around the line up will likely be
iPhone 9 (?) $399 A13 64 GB LTE LCD
iPhone XR $499 A12 64 GB LTE LCD
iPhone 11 $599 A13 64 GB LTE LCD
iPhone 12, 5.4 inch $699 A14 64 GB 5G OLED
iPhone 12, 6.1 inch $799 A14 64 GB 5G OLED
iPhone 12 Pro, 6.1 inch $999 A14 128 GB 5G OLED ToF camera
iPhone 12 Pro Max, 6.7 inch $1099 A14 128 GB 5G OLED ToF camera

This looks to have something for everyone at a range of great price points. Perhaps Apple will drop the iPhone XR and jump from the $399 iPhone 9 to the $599 iPhone 11, but I doubt it.

No. All I see is a list of phablets. You could bring the list down to 4 phones and serve all needs:

iPhone cheapo, $399, 64 GB LCD, 5.8 inch with bezels, TouchID
iPhone 12, $999, 128 GB OLED 5.8 inch FaceID
iPhone 12 plus, $1099, 256 GB OLED 6.5 inch FaceID
iPhone 12 elite, $899, 128 GB OLED 4 inch FaceID

Use old components for the cheapo, put in the best stuff that You have into the rest.

But this would be way to difficult for the trillion dollar company...

How is something that hasn’t even released yet a failure?

On the other hand, the Samsung has a craptastic processor and camera, runs android and will recieve software updates for 2 years max.

In addition, LCD doesn't suffer from OLED burn-in, traditional fingerprint sensors are still faster, and a higher-res (and probably less color accurate) screen is marginally better while using more battery.

It's all a matter of priorities, I couldn't care less about the specs you've mentioned...
