imo, the macbook air does not need miniLED nor does it need ProMotion nor to be made out of metal. i'd much rather it be made out of some quality plastic material (aside from some metal on the bottom for heatsink). this way, the laptop would be lighter and better at taking fall damage and maybe even a little cheaper
The iBooks were pretty tough but I remember the poly MacBooks getting pretty brittle with a few years of usage. If they go back to plastic, it better be something strong.

13.6" and 15.2" - odd display sizes, anyone can make sense out of it? in terms of pixel density and panel sizes and such? thanks in advance.

I thought they will re-use the same panels 13.3" from MBA and 15.4" from MBP... i guess they could extend the display a bit with edge to edge display technology.

Material and manufacturing processes have improved a lot. It wouldn't be impossible now for Apple to take their unibody process and apply it to plastic.

Are they really any more odd than 13.3" and 15.4" though?

I mean if they adopt the notch it would require new display sizes, so that could partly be the reason.

Because it's easy...?

Otherwise you'll end up with stupid names like "Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra".
Erm, no.. we should go with metric measurements like the rest of the world. Even the article is confusing when we're talking about "15 Inch" displays being different sizes. if we measured in CM we'd know the true size (and people from outside the US would understand it easier).

Those are essentially the sizes of the 14" and 16" MacBook Pro displays below the notch.

13.3 and 15.6 are odd sizes, but everyone just refers to them as 13 and 15.

7.9 is an 8.
9.7 and 10.2 is a 10.
10.9 is an 11.
12.9 is a 13.
21.5 and 23.5 are just 22 and 24.

Nothing new here.

The Air has become Apple's "entry level" MacBook, so it would make sense that it drops the "pro" features.

The iPad Air doesn't have ProMotion or a mini LED display, so it would make sense to me for the Mac equivalent to follow the same trajectory.

Yet the iPad Air is a mid stack product, whereas the MBA is at the bottom of the lineup. The question is, will Apple adjust the lineups for consistency. Ex: renaming the current Air the MacBook, then adding the new Air above it?

Couldn't hold out anymore, my wife needed a new laptop and we picked up an M1 MacBook Air yesterday, 8 core, 16gb ram with 1TB SSD. Gotta say its a nice machine for it's age, and the battery life is great. Buy what you need when you need it I guess.

Funny how people use decimals in rumors but not with the actual product. The current Air has a 13.3" screen but we call it 13" laptop. Just call the new Airs 13" and 15", or 14" and 16". They will have nice screens with good pixel density.

12 and 14 inch MacBook, 14 and 16 inch MacBook Pro. A nice and simple product line.
Simple, but still missing out on the much requested 15" consumer model, and with a computer that couldn't fit a standard size keyboard unless it retains the .5" display bezels from the 2015 model. 13.6" & 15.2" for the consumer models and 14.2" and 16.2" for the Pro models seems ideal to me. Every model has an audience with minimal overlap/ duplication.

I’m cool with this I wouldn’t expect to get Pro features on an Air but I’m so excited for the larger screen sizes.

I can’t wait to order a 15” Air!

The casings seemed to hold up okay (minus scuffing) but the palmrests often chipped and discolored.

The later unibody polycarbonate models from 09-12 didn't have the chipping, but less-than-careful use would often lead to top case cracking around the drop hinge, and any drops were almost guaranteed to cause cracks/holes on the corners.
