Simple, but still missing out on the much requested 15" consumer model, and with a computer that couldn't fit a standard size keyboard unless it retains the .5" display bezels from the 2015 model. 13.6" & 15.2" for the consumer models and 14.2" and 16.2" for the Pro models seems ideal to me. Every model has an audience with minimal overlap/ duplication.
Apple sells consumers what Apple thinks they need, not the other way around.

Apple was mainly tied with Intel CPU development life cycle and cost associated with it.
And also perceived value with i3, i5 and i7 branding.

Now they make their own chips, that gives them lot of flexibility with product line up.

with AMD being almost dead on the laptop CPU few years back, Apple was paying top dollars for the laptop chip; now with internal development they know the cost ...

I think they were talking about the lid (the display part), not the bottom part that looks quite a bit more chunky, even if it isn't. The lid wasn't really curved on the older models.
It absolutely was. The lids have been thicker in the middle (by the Apple logo) than at the edges for several generations now.

Will they support multiple external 6k Displays?
Probably not. They seem to want to use "M1 class" processors as the low end laptop & desktop and mid-high end iPad processor. Those lower devices don't need 2 displays. It's a point of market segmentation to keep the 2+ External displays to the Higher end Pro/Max chips.

Yeah, Apple putting mini-LED in their cheapest MacBook. Dream on. Or they’ll just jack up the price. :)

I don’t think anyone has speculated on the cost differences between TSMC and Intel really except knowing Apple makes more money off their own SoC sales. It’s more to the greatly reduced power and thermal differences that effect laptop design that also factor in production costs. Also we still have no idea when Apple will produce successors to M1 family, it’s all assumptions. Like speculating it’s at a 2 year instance.

For me, a slimed down (non tapered) version of the current pro line would look very compelling. Soup up some colors, M2, little increase in screen size and your good to create the next mainstream laptop to beat.

In a thread on Twitter, Young said that the the 2022 MacBook Air will feature a display size of 13.6-inches. This would make it 0.3-inches larger than the current MacBook Air, but still 0.6-inches smaller than the current 14.2-inch MacBook Pro. The new display size will presumably be accommodated by a complete redesign that moves away from the current tapered profile in favor of a thinner, MacBook Pro-like chassis.

Confirmed. Jony Ive had a hand in this.

Cupertino, California — Apple today announced that Sir Jony Ive, Apple’s chief design officer, will depart the company as an employee later this year to form an independent design company which will count Apple among its primary clients. While he pursues personal projects, Ive in his new company will continue to work closely and on a range of projects with Apple.

i dont give a **** about mini led it sucks. just give me a 15 or 16" macbook air. even better...give me a 15/16" macbook air with OLED ;)

imo, the macbook air does not need miniLED nor does it need ProMotion nor to be made out of metal. i'd much rather it be made out of some quality plastic material (aside from some metal on the bottom for heatsink). this way, the laptop would be lighter and better at taking fall damage and maybe even a little cheaper
The world doesn’t need anymore plastic. Aluminum is not made from oil, and aluminum recycles easily.

That still doesn't change what I said, Apple does not care what the consumers say they want. Apple makes products that consumers didn't know they needed with very few exceptions.
