The chip is scheduled to debut with a with a price of $568 in high volume

i'm ignorant... but that seems expensive!!! what will that mean for the price of the MacBook 15"

Re: integrated graphics...

A faster turd is still a turd. These graphics chipsets (I'm loathe to even call them GPUs) have fundamental architectural design limitations that will ALWAYS result in crappy performance, no matter how much they try to hack them to be faster.

Intel excels at general purpose CPUs. They suck at graphics. They really should form a partnership with Nvidia (unlikely) or AMD (HAH!) if they want to be in this business.

Buy only if you need it - Approaching the end of a cycle

In the buyers guide here for the MBP. Although if it went "Don't Buy" that would pretty much be a full red house. But I would firmly tell a friend to hold off for now... well a friend i liked anyway haha

I got a MacBook Air when the redesign came out in late 2010, switching from a MacBook Pro. I love it, but it's underpowered. Hopefully these new Pros will be a bit more portable like the rumors suggest.

I'd like to see a decent-sized SSD as standard, lose the optical drive that I NEVER use (even on my iMac!), discrete graphics across all models, and 1080p resolution. I mean come on, Apple. 1440x900 for the "Pro." My Air has that.

Retina display would be nice, but I doubt we'll see it until next year at the earliest.

Hopefully the next generation will not be about speed, but LTE, retina display, thinner and lighter. And of course, one can dream of a 10 hour battery life.

I'd upgrade in a heartbeat for the above.

A faster CPU and GPU? I have little interest. The fact is I almost never sit around waiting for my computer to finish a task.

Most people don't.

That's based on cycle averages, the Previous update was a silent minor spec update in October of last year and was in no way a significant update. Realistically there hasn't been a proper update since Feb 2011.

I don't think 10-20% is a "significant" performance boost. Unless you're encoding x264 videos all day you probably won't notice any difference, infact a SSD would make a much bigger difference in most cases.

Anyway Ivy Bridge isn't about improving performance, this is Intel's tick in it's cycle, so it's more about moving to a new process and increasing efficiency through a die shrink rather than performance gain with a new architecture. I wonder if there's a noticable increase in battery life with the new MacBook Pros, something which the current models struggle with.

The smaller 13-inch form factor requires that those models rely solely on integrated graphics
The older models didn't have this problem; what changed in the design?

Recently bought one - not gonna lose sleep...

I recently - as in about 2 months ago - bought a new MBP 15", and maxed it out to 16GB aftermarket memory, removed the DVD, put in an expansion cage and slapped in 2 480GB SSD drives. Haven't been happier.

It's still WAY faster than my iMac 27" I bought in late 2009, and for what I need it for (multiple VMWare fusion machines, portable working) it's awesome.

If I wait and skip about 2 or 3 generations like I did having my old 15" non-unibody MBP with 6GB ram and two HD's, it'll be something to look forward to. A 20% speed boost isn't enough to make me regret my recent purchase...

..That said, I will be happy for those who will be picking one up, tho ;)

Ok, this is blonde haired thinking.. but from a very superficial POV I'd say the MBP range hasn't been fully refreshed since the unibody design was introduced way back when.

am i the only dumb blonde thinking this? :/

They still haven't updated all the mbp images on their site to display the new fcpx instead of fcp7. #slackers

Do you really think that Apple will launch 15" first then 13" on June? This is A long enough waited major update. Please Apple, Don't make me wait until June!

Once upon a time the smaller Pro laptops did have dedicated GPUs in them (such as this 12" PowerBook G4 that I'm ready to replace now).

If they lose the optical drive then I see no reason why they can't throw a low- to mid-range discrete graphics card in the 13" MBP. I would buy one in a heartbeat if they went this route.

probably a dumb question, but....

When are we looking at seeing a generation of chips with ZERO chance of integrated graphics?

I'm still on an '07 15 inch MBP. I've been waiting to upgrade until there's a 15 inch air with retina & good graphics performance. At this point this is close enough... this beachballing lag machine gets more aggravating every day XD

The 13" MacBooks have always had integrated graphic solutions. The new MacBook Pro 13" uses an APU, and the intel HD 3000 is pretty damn good by Intels standards anyway.

would you not buy one if they did not?

One upgrade needed on 13": Resolution.

Compared to the 11" MBA fonts look terribly pixelated on the 13". Compared to retina iPad they are completely unreadable. A simple bump to 1440x900 like the 13" air will give it decent PPI.

But I'll still stick with my 11" air for now. Only things I miss from the pro are FireWire and the sd card slot.

there wont be a RETINA display for a 15inch notebook. u know how much that would make everything smaller????

HiDPI displays use the extra pixels to make everything clearer, not increase the real estate. Nothing would be smaller.

There will be no discrete graphics in 13-ichers because HD4000 is (will be) as powerful as low-mid range discrete graphics nowadays.
