This article really should be titled as "next generation of macbooks pros will PROBABLY be faster than current generation"....

well of course they will. We don't need a rumor to figure that one out.

I'm still on an '07 15 inch MBP. I've been waiting to upgrade until there's a 15 inch air with retina & good graphics performance. At this point this is close enough... this beachballing lag machine gets more aggravating every day XD

You'll be waiting years before a "retina" (lame term) display is released and doesnt drag the graphics performance to a complete standstill.

If a 6970m still has hiccups trying to drive a 2560 x 1440 panel, how on earth do people on here expect a HD 4000 with low amounts of shared memory to be able to drive more than that, let alone a 1200p display (should a 1920 x 1200 screen come to 15" MBP).

I'd probably move up to the cheapest 15" that has a discrete GPU, although I much prefer the smaller form-factor.

Of course the lack of a matte screen option on the 13" would probably keep me from buying one anyway...

ya i suggest the same rather than setting high expectations for the 13", there is probably a better chance the 13 MBP gets merged with the 13 MBA than the 13" MBP geting 15 and 17" specs

I honestly can't remember the last time I needed a faster CPU or even GPU.

I'd like to see a 17" MBP with the same form factor, no optical drive, an SSD and a HD, and vastly improved battery life.

other than the battery life (which i dont see geting much improvement) the other 2 things you want can be done very easily yourself

I think you're looking for a MBA if you don't value performance first and foremost.

Better information would be what gain there are in the TDP between the two generation, gain that could lead to thinner and lighter computer and (/or) better discreet graphic card.

New 15" MacBook
------------

Ivy Bridge
Retina Display
128GB/256GB SSD
8GB ram
USB 3.0
NVidia graphics card
Anti-glare option (free)
Brushed aluminum keypad
Removal of black bezel
10 hr battery
0.5" thick
2.8 lbs

That was fun. :D

I agree, if I were to prioritize for my needs, I have extend battery life at the top, with SSD/HD next. I can live with an i5 and integrated graphics. Don't care about optical drive or change in form factor.

.

20% Increase in CPU speed? Wow - that's a lot less than expected. I'm happy I bought my iMac in November instead of waiting for the 2012 model.

The new MBA on the other hand should see much of an increase in GPU performance. If Apple would also add 8GB RAM, then we have a winner. Sucks that we probably won't see it until June though.

More than the IVB CPU/GPU the 13" MBP needs to match 13" MBA's resolution of 1440x900. It's really absurd that Apple sticks to 1280x800 on the 13".

I DO value performance. ...but a processor bump isn't going to make my computer faster in anything but a very few tasks. I don't do 3d, I'm an editor, and a photographer. Data access is always the bottleneck. That being said, I don't want an Air, because I need a CPU that's more powerful than my 4 year old 13" aluminum Macbook.

Wow...3 pages and no one whining yet about anti-glare/glossy screens.

I'm impressed. :D

I've still got my 2006 15" 2.26 C2D, anyone have any idea what kind of processor performance boost (%) I'll likely get from the new 15" IB? If there is a 20% increase versus only the 2011 SB model, then I imagine it will be massive for me.

Yep. My late '07 2.4GHz C2D has a benchmark of 3120 according to MacTracker and the current gen 2.5 has 10891 so yes, massive :)
