No problems here before or after the upgrade. The sensor does seem more sensitive with 4.1 and engages the screen lock when something is about one inch from the ear piece. Before it was about 1/2 inch. The unlock delay also seems to be a bit longer.

It seems that the people who are having trouble, are generally seeing it consistently over multiple phones, whereas the people w/o issues don't see it on any iPhones. This tells me that there is something in the way it is being used that differs. It could be anything from long hair, to hand placement, to environmental lighting.

In any case it's not the users fault, but as much detail about how and where you use the phone (any if other people have the same problem with your phone) would help determine the weakness.

I didn't seem to have the problem at all before the update. My phone was near-perfect. Now I do get it and I see what people were on about.

Updated mine to 4.1 and no change on the PS and for some reason it actually seemed worse!

Now the Retard Geniuses cant tell me no when I want a replacement, Went to apple tonight to exchange my phone which they did and my now week 32 iPhone with 4.1 is doing THE SAME DAMN THING !!!!:mad::mad::mad:

I have never hated a phone SO MUCH in my life (but yet loved it so much for everything else but a phone either).

I see no red light on either phone, this my #3 iPhone4 and the way it looks it wont be the last one either!

It's still a pos.

Agreed - I was happy I didn't have the proximity issue before 4.1. Now, I can put the iPhone to my ear, and I can see the screen turn on after about 2 seconds, and it did it each time I moved away and brought it close across 2 calls without fail.

My screen is just on, off, on, off... all the time now. I can either have it pushed to my ear or slightly raised. No difference at all.

Calling Apple to complain right now since the majority of people said theirs is fixed now.

that happens to me but I think it the way i hold my hone to my ear.

Since I don't have the phone flat on my cheek more like I have the speaker outward and my face does not the touch the screen. So when I shake the screen flicker on and off. but I never muted or ended a call.

These headaches/nightmares are the reason why my wife and I have updated our phones. We're gonna stick with our 4.01 for now unless Apple put out a real update instead of a bunch of fluff (GameCenter, HDR, etc.).

On phone with Apple right now. The phone lit up and my cheek put me on hold while talking to him... It's like a freaking blinker. On, off, on, off. It sounds like they're going to replace it for me.

How many of you are using a case that has a hole cut out for the proximity sensor?

I have the Otterbox case, and I'm thinking that might be part of my problem.

again i had no issues pre 4.1...i've had an otterbox on since i got it. i tried removing it though to see if it helped, and it actually seemed worse without it.

Add me to the people who has issues as bad or worse than before updating to 4.1...and I lost my jailbreak/unlock in the process. The phone almost constantly blinks on and off and I ended one call and cheek dialed someone else and on another call I made the icons jiggle and actually moved one icon onto another springboard screen.

I made an appointment with the Apple store in 50 minutes so I better be coming home with a replacement.

I always do a restore and update to a new phone and resynch

This is a fairly large update and Apple does not test as well with upgrades.

I dont have any issues at all

Whats the point of a replacement?

Same phone model + Same software version = Same problem

Im just trying to see the logic behind spending the time to do this when the new device will most certainly suffer from the same thing.

Maybe my face is not normal but if my phone is touching my cheek then the top of the phone where the sensor is located is not against my ear. If the phone is not placed to your ear like a phone should be then your ear is not covering the proximity sensor then the screen is going to come on.

iOS 4.1 is BS!!

I never had a proximity sensor issue before with any updates on the iPhone 4. Updated to 4.1, and first thing I notice is the proximity sensor issue that everyone was talking about. Never have been soo annoyed until I saw it!! Stupid screen keeps turning on near my cheek whenever I'm in a call.

Going to downgrade to 4.0.2. Don't really care about Game Center or HDR photos until this damned, new "proximity-sensor-turns-on" feature is REMOVED. Oh and did I mention a worse battery life??

Hello 4.1.1

.

The point is that many think it is a HARDware QC issue. They may be trying to fix it with software, but they are putting lipstick on a pig.
