So you folks who are waiting for the first Intel PBs...Are you looking forward to getting the first Yonah release - which is a chip that will be the short-term solution for at most 6-9 months or are you going to hold out for the real thing - Merom which will make the Yonah badly absolete the minute it comes out?

BTW, industry trades say Intel is having mucho problems with Yonah in terms of heat and energy consumption. May be a longer wait than we think.

Nvidia GeForce 7800GT

On the Apple Store, they only list two options for the graphics cards for new PowerMacs: the Nvidia GeForce 6600 and the QuadroFX 4500, but on the "graphics" page for the PowerMac, they list the GeForce 7800GT. I wonder when we'll see a 7x00 model Nvidia card available to order for the PowerMac.

Also, I'm surprised that there aren't any of the new X1x00 model ATI cards available. The X1600 and X1800 cards decode H.264 video natively, taking a large load off of the CPU.

well since they didnt update the 12", my rev. D 12" is still the most current model! one thing to be happy about....now give me intel, jeeeeez.

Also fascinating is that the dual 2.7GHz is now the baseline for hardware speed comparisons. I don't see a Pentium reference anywhere.... ;)

haha! that's great. I saw that comparison but did not think twice about it, especially not like _that_. That's PR for you.

Kind of funny that the majority of apps will be faster on the older DP 2.7 G5 than the DP Dual Core 2.5 G5...

The only good news about the PBs is that we now know the Intel PBs will have the higher resolution screens...

Anyone else want to bet these are the last G4 powerbook revisions ever?

3200 bucks for a computer and only 512 MB of RAM just doesn't look right.

Agreed. While an upgrade to 1GB RAM would cost $100-$200, depending on which option you choose, 1GB RAM should be standard on at least the high end Power Mac. Especially at that price tag.

Checking out the iBook/Pbook comparison chart, I see the new Powerbooks support lid-closed mode. Pretty cool, is this new?

Also, CPU for the 14" iBook is listed as 1.33, I believe it should be 1.42.

It's a shame that the 12" Pbook only has 256 mb of RAM built in. The iBook max ram is more than the 12" Pbook max ram.
No, Powerbooks have supported close-lid mode ever since the TiBook

Blame Motorola. Apple doesn't make processors. There is a reason for the switch to Intel, after all.

NO WAY! It's Apple! They could've used the MPC7448, but instead they kicked Freescale 's and our asses!
Thank you Apple! NOT!

Horrific. I mean absolutely horrific. STILL no new powerbooks. If anyone honestly believes this a powerbook update worth shelling out your cash for then I have some enlargment sugar pills to sell you also.

Pro Users held Hostage YET again…

You aren't being held hostage. There's NOTHING Apple can do about the Powerbook until the Intel chips arrive. If anything, it was Apple being held hostage by IBM and their claims that the G5 would eventually be a suitable notebook processor. Now they are playing catch-up.

There's nothing to stop you from switching to a Windows laptop if you're that upset.

......

Aside from that, I'm chuffed to see a Mac version of the Quadra. Apple's GPU assignments were totally screwed before the start of this year. Workstations with gaming cards, consumer machines which could barely run games. These latest iMac and PowerMac updates have completely fixed that. And not before time either.

right...........lets get this straight.... everyone slammed Apple the last time they updated PowerMacs for not including dual core chips....... now they have been updated with the dual core chip including one PM with 2 dual core chips (4 cores), and everyones unhappy because they're crap?

The stupid thing is that a dual core 2.3 won't be as fast as the original 2 x 2.3 chips tho will it?

I remember someone site saying the new dual core chips have 50-80% better performance than the standard ones. so thats not as good as 2 standard 2.3s.

what i was hoping for was a dual dual midrange mac, don't know if i can afford £2,300!!! thats a hell of alot.

I'm glad they got rid of the slot loading drive in the PowerMac, so that it should be possible to change it for something good.

Did they also get rid of the liquid cooling? This is a must. I want a dual dual-core (but not now, holding on for final revision).

You didn't buy Apple ram did you? If you did you really are a whore...you can get that ram for about 1/3 the price on newegg.com or crucial.com

My tibook has retired!

That's what I heard..

That's why I JUST ordered a 15" with 1 gig ram and 7200rpm harddrive.. thats the biggest plus. I think i can live wit hthe speed although it would have been nice to have a bit more speed, which gives me more of a feeling of an update.

Nevertheless as a heavy photoshoper I love the faster hard drive.

No bad, but....

PowerMacs are incredible. Since they will be the LAST to go to the Intel platform they will need to be fast for the next year or so. As for the PowerBooks, nice screens but no processor update or graphics GPU. Really sucks hard. In fact I think this say they will be the FIRST to move to the Intel chips in June 2006. These are 6 months of sales.....

Question anyone know if these machines are released with OS X 10.4.3....WHERE is it???? I thought it would be released to support these machines and update the rest of us.

PB updates

Hey guys, I am a mac newb, and looking at getting my first PB!!! I can understand that some people are disappointed but the fact remains that they are of better value now then they were and that's always a good thing. Increased res, better standard features (super drive, 128 mb vid, etc) and the 7200 rpm harddrive option, while not incredible are still good upgrades. I for one am glad I waited for the updates and am on my way to purchasing the 15" with the 7200 rpm harddrive upgrade and I can't wait :D

Too bad about the 12inch PB. The superdrive standard is nice, but it would have been nice to see a backlit keyboard. And this thing still doesn't comes with 512 sodered in, it has 256 and a removable 256. So the ram of the 12inch ibook is more upgradable than the 12inch PB.

yeah, I was stunned that they didn't, at the very least, bump the fixed RAM on the 12" to 512.

even a current Pentium 4 at 3.6 Ghz would be faster then this and it is just a single processor.

And you base that on what? I highly doubt you're right.

Its funy how they don't compare the latest machines (on the benchmark page) to Intel processors anymore and instead they compare it to PowerPCs, so I am assuming that after they'll go Intel they will compare their "top of the line" Intels against PowerPCs...

Anyway, Powerbook update is a little disappointing but afterall Apple had to justify the switch to Intel, especially for mobile processors... But I am in love with the dual dual core PowerMac, I doubt anything in the PC world will touch it in terms of performance per dollar... Boxx dual core duals cost a bit more...

Yeah. Powerbook G5's next Tuesday.

OK, maybe that's not funny. I'm buying this updated Powerbook, and here's my mildly technical question for you people. Will the 7200 RPM hard drive use more battery than the 5400 RPM hard drive? How much more?

I'm thinking the 7200 will be too much power consumption, but I remember enjoying a speed bump when I replaced my old iMac's 5400 HD with a 7200 HD. but it's not strictly necessary for me at this point, especially not if it eats the battery. Yes? No?

Can I upgrade the RAM later by myself without risking warranty ?
I need the faster shipment, so I'll order the standart package but I want to buy 512 MB Ram later and upgrade it myself to 1 GB,
possible ?

It looks like a yes to me.
