Yes!! Updated PBs! I'm finally going to make the switch. I'm off to the Apple Store right away!
My 15" is already ordered ... have to put my 500 MHz Titanium to rest finally. It's been a good machine, except for ... no writable CD/DVD drive, 512 MB RAM, 20GB hard drive (updated to 40GB), and lower res display. I'm lovin' life. Have to decide now whether to add $3500 more and buy a new Quad Tower to replace my 350 MHz blue and white (never used anymore ... gone portable ... especially since it is faster ... LOL). :D

Nice updates but....

Ok the PMs got some nice updates but I have to say I'm slightly annoyed, I've just got the funds together to get a PM for my home studio, but the plan was to buy a Powercore and UAD1 card, only problem is these cards are PCI and wont work in a PCI express slot, bugger! well I guess I'm gonna have to go to the refurb store :(

Priceless..

Wow, great deal.

Quad G5
16GB of ECC RAM
1 terabyte HD
Quadra Video card
dual 30" ACDs

All yours for only $22,000. I hope I can get the educational discount ;)

Quad 60% Faster Encoding SD Video BLOWS!

:( Not faster enough. I don't think 60% Faster Encoding of SD Video is anything to get excited about. I expected it to be more than 100% faster. Man there must be some serious overhead in that architechture. :(

Of course it goes without saying that the PowerBook update is pathetic. I like the higher res screens sure - who doesn't. But without dual core Yonah, it's just window dressing on an otherwise weak tool.

Apple just decided to replace my powerbook (applecare), and ive yet to ship my computer back to them. They said theyll ship a new one out, once they recieve my old one, am i going to get this model? They said this computer will be right off the production line. And as of 2 days ago when i made the repair i dont think theyd still be making the old models, and already making these.

I want a new one, SUPERDRIVE
and some crazy resolution, apple gave me a dude to ask and help me thorugh my replacement, shouldi ask him, or will it make me sound to happy to get a brand new computer?

Powerbook updates..droolll...

Mine has a faulty logic board and I have to send it in. Who did you talk to to initiate an upgrade?

I just sent you an email.

Thank you Steve for the table scraps. I'll wait for the real PB updates next year.

same here. I guess I can be satisfied by the notion that by waiting 6 more months I will get a superior x86 powerbook.

F-

Lame and overpriced all the way around. $3300 for a powermac with a dead end chip? No thanks.

I would agree and it is even slower then their last Dual which was 2.7Ghz. Looks like Intel was the way to go, even a current Pentium 4 at 3.6 Ghz would be faster then this and it is just a single processor.

What a lack of information on "Aperture"... this program is going to have to be really dern good to compete with Photoshop. I really don't understand why Apple just jumped into the photo/imaging market like this; there's just no hole for them to fill at the moment.

Too bad about the 12inch PB. The superdrive standard is nice, but it would have been nice to see a backlit keyboard. And this thing still doesn't comes with 512 sodered in, it has 256 and a removable 256. So the ram of the 12inch ibook is more upgradable than the 12inch PB.

Yes... that's because they haven't actually updated the 12 inch model. They appear to have dropped the ComboDrive one from the line-up and the only one available is the existing 12 inch SuperDrive (revision D). However they have dropped the price by £100 so it's not all bad.

I don't think they give you 16 GB, that's the maximum you can put in, still only comes with 512 MB. I'd rather spec and add it myself than let Apple charge me for extra anyway (and decide the slot configuration for me). I don't know why it's such a big deal to anyone. 512 MB is a decent base amount for Tiger.

you are right... :D :D

Dual dual PM at last ...

...anyone know if it needs water cooling though? That's the only possible fly in the ointment. It would've been nice to have a dual dual in the midpoint, but overall this is pretty much what I was hoping for.

Roll on November shipping :D

If you need what's listed then the price would be worth it I suspect.

PowerBooks? PowerMacs? What?

Where are the new iPods! What's with the "computer" crap, from an MP3 player company! ;)

Oh, right. We've got the iPod nano from a month ago and the new iPod from last week...

Aside from the still-not-announced new Mac minis (64MB VRAM, etc) and the iPod shuffle (which is still brand new from january), everything's been updated (except the 12" PowerBook, which would've been updated today if it had to be updated at all).

As for that new top-of-the-line PowerMac... "Quad Damage"! :D

Also fascinating is that the dual 2.7GHz is now the baseline for hardware speed comparisons. I don't see a Pentium reference anywhere.... ;)

As for the PowerBooks, I fully expected that the 7448 isn't available, no matter some in this board said. Blame it on FreeScale or deal with it, whiners.

No, i'll blame it on apple. thank you very much. Apple is the one who decided to keep us in the land of the PowerPC not FreeScale. Apple had the lack of business sense to go with IBM when IBM failed to deliver their promise within the FIRST YEAR. Why would Apple cut it so close? Depending on IBM to deliver just on promises alone? Apple could of chosen Intel instead of IBM and we wouldnt be in this situation today. i just find it hard to believe that Apple couldnt see this coming when they switched from Motorola to IBM. Its embarrassing for Steve.

Pull your head out Steve.

For the love of all that's holy, Apple, can't we get a sub-$1500 PowerMac again??? And I'm going to have to confess to all my idiot PC buddies that I dropped 2 grand and only got 512 megs of RAM and a 160 GB hard drive?

Even some of us Apple "die-hards" are finding PowerMac prices hard to swallow these days. Ugh. Guess I'll be waiting for the Intels, if I can stand to listen to my dual 867 G4 vacuum cleaner that long... :(
Amen!

And don't tell us to, "just buy an iMac". I don't want a new monitor!

If they'd just put out a Mac with a G5 in a desktop case (ala PowerMac 6100 / NeXTStation size), I'd buy it.

The Powerbook Dump 2005 misery...
WHAT A DISAPOINTMENT!!!! APPLE should be ashamed of these PB updates

Still that old 7447a CPUs, 2 years old GPUs, and they ask 2000 euros for that, what a slap in the face...

geeze, I can understand disappointment and all, but phrases like "APPLE should be ashamed of these PB updates" or "what was apple thinking.." "don't they know any better" etc, really get on my nerves. Been seeing it a lot around this forum; people going off as if they know something Apple execs/engineers don't already know. I'll probably get flamed for this, but I'm sure a company like Apple (priding itself on innovation and design) would LOVE to produce the computer of everyones' dreams. Whether it is within reason (business reason) for them to do so is something we are not (as the consumer) qualified to know. If you do understand the intricate nature of the business and do in fact "know better", you should be out there with your own computer/hardware manufacturing company competing against Apple to produce cooler, less expensive, wares.

OK, my rant is done. Sorry guys/gals.

Checking out the iBook/Pbook comparison chart, I see the new Powerbooks support lid-closed mode. Pretty cool, is this new?

Also, CPU for the 14" iBook is listed as 1.33, I believe it should be 1.42.

It's a shame that the 12" Pbook only has 256 mb of RAM built in. The iBook max ram is more than the 12" Pbook max ram.

PowerBook updates are JUNK

No, not a complainer, just stating REALITY, for folks who think we show too much ingratitude.

These aren't updates --- these are developments implemented 18 months ago. Apple was just staggering these out as to fool idiots like us who wait, and wait, and wait, while contributing to further cases of OCD.

Until Intel, anything portable-pro Apple has out is a great exhibit piece for the MoMA in NYC. Title it: "Brushed Metal Aesthetic Kitsch."

On the positive side, horde the "older revision" powerbooks sure to go on sale and use them delightfully as your own museum piece.

Horrific

Horrific. I mean absolutely horrific. STILL no new powerbooks. If anyone honestly believes this a powerbook update worth shelling out your cash for then I have some enlargment sugar pills to sell you also.
