Our old collections have not become obsolete.

Yes they have. Do you really watch non-HD content in 2012? Geez. It it cold back there in ancient times?

That said, Apple needs to swap the ODD out for a Blu-Ray drive. The "stream only" future might happen eventually but it's FAR away for the time being, considering that the vast majority of the civilized world is subject to really crappy bandwidth caps. Hell, even in the U.S. I'm capped now with AT&T fiber. In countries like Canada and Australia it's even worse (newsflash: the U.S. is not the only market Apple is concerned with).

My hopes for the 2012 iMac

- Ivy Bridge (of course)
- USB3
- i7 standard on 27" models
- 8Gb RAM on 27" models
- Better Video all round
- Keep the Ethernet & FW800 port plus DVD (I still use DVD and Ethernet is a must for some offices)
- Bigger HDD (1Tb on 21", 2Tb on 27", 3Tb option on some)
- Cheaper SSD option (maybe 512Gb)
- Matte screen (or at least less glare without glass cover)

Same or lower price points with delivery in late September or early October!

Dont forget...if by chance this thing does have a 'retina' version of it, that ODD drive space is key to take back so they can have a more powerful GPU/Board on there.

Hopefully they make both. A normal version for your old schoolers that want the ODD, and a new Retina version for the rest of us.

I do. I'd rather have them use that space for a better GPU card. I can purchase an external BRD/DVD for the rare times I need to burn something to disc.

Something you use 5% over the life of the course of the computer is not wise to keep in the machine. It's dated tech that isn't used by many anymore and when it is, it during rare occasions.

The only time I can justify an external was on a cheap netbook, if I am paying five hundred plus for something I prefer it to not be limited to such a degree, since I use it so often I would prefer not having to hook up an external to a desktop computer, would feel a bit ridiculous for my needs, would prefer a blu-ray drive personally.

I tend to use my computers for everything, they are often my home theater so I need them to do quite a bit.

You did answer that question that some that require it do not always mind an external.

Often enough when it comes to my DVDs even though I prefer Blu-ray and HD, I cannot upgrade my entire collection at this time.

That is what I have wanted this entire time, I want the dvd drive gone and replaced with a Blu-ray drive, that would make it perfect! No limits then.

I can't stomach SD content, I don't know how you can even watch that garbage these days. If it's not HD then it's not worth my time, bottom line.

It can look really bad on an HD television, a good part of my collection is still in standard def along with many films having yet to be released on blu-ray. Like with the cable I have, the standard def can look not just bad, completely horrible while the HD looks quite nice.

Having my entire collection on blu-ray would be perfect.

Me too but it would cost too much.

IMO we will NOT see a retina iMac until the redesign in 2013, even then it will most likely be an optional screen upgrade at a premium price until 2014-15.

Unfortunately, Blu-Rays can't even store most of our edit projects or graphic projects anymore...it's basically all external drives for us now...OD Media is just not keeping up with the size of files now.

With the Blu Rays, I break up my simulations between discs, then pack the 3-4 that contain one simulation into a small case, I seperate each case. Then lock them in my bigass water/fireproof safe.

I prefer this to the could, where my data is subject to EULA, and not secure. While I do have external drives, I don't trust them long term. And I like being able to keep my stuff under lock and key.

Oh, so I assume you ONLY watch Content on Blu Ray right?

Because that streamed content looks like **** ;)

Except it does. It takes up space inside my iMac. It makes my iMac run hotter. It makes the iMac bigger. It means less options to install additional HDD/SDD.

1: The ODD does not make your iMac run hot, its horrible cooling system and useless thinness makes it run hot. My 27inch 2011 iMac runs pretty toasty all the time. In the name of useless thinness. Worst Mac I've bought besides my G5 Tower back in the day.

2: No it doesn't make the iMac bigger. Tons of laptops have Optical drives, all of them are thinner than an iMac.

3: No, its the reason you have options to install another SSD or HDD.

I don't wish for a number keypad. Though the number keypad comes in handy, it is not essential for a vast number of users. I think it is better off as a separate keyboard or third-party product, leaving the iMac looking as simple to use as possible to consumers.

That was supposed to just be a quick add-on joke. But since you discussed it as a real life point....the problem is that there is no wireless keyboard with a number pad, anymore. There used to be. Now there is just wired, so apparently the point is that all people that want wireless don't want numbers??

Of course, I'm thoroughly enjoying my Logitech K800 (backlit, wireless, full keyboard, decent keys, even media control), so no real need anymore. Waited for this product to exist for what...15 years?

You can buy a Wireless bluetooth keypad that snaps on to Apples wireless keyboard. Works pretty well.

1. My 2008 iMac runs pretty hot but It's never been a problem.

2. "Tons of laptops" is pretty silly. Most CEs are opting to remove the ODD now.

3. Options is pretty tough. It's a pain for the average consumer to remove the ODD and put in a HDD/SSD.

Y'all need to stop using the iMac in your lap.

Apple could dump the DVD, SD, Firewire and Ethernet port and I wouldn't care.

I'm iffy on the matte/glossy.

No number keypad? I also use those everyday.

Appears I tend to use computer tech that a lot of people no longer do.

Saw that, never tried it. Basically gave up on Apple offering something that works for me, anymore. (ADK II, so sad)

  • At work I use a real keyboard, with switches under the keys so I don't feel like killing myself every time I touch it.
  • In the LR, the kids have a Kensington washable keyboard, and from its current state, I'd say that was a brilliant idea.
  • In my HT, I have the K800, which is glorious. And the keys are ok, although not like switches.

I actually prefer the 10 key on a wireless in my lap even if it is seldom used. It is a better size to fit my lap.

Yes.

A big screen that dumps ancient technology. USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt is cool though.

Ah, well I see. You should really look into one of these when Windows 8 Hits,

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Gateway...&s_kwcid=PTC!pla!!!42057811279!g!!21231402319

You don't even need a keyboard! Or a mouse! Both of which have been around for decades, old and useless.

Some people use their computers for actual work ;)

Ethernet: Why would you get rid of this? Makes no sense.

FireWire: Yeah, I'll throw away all the devices I have that use it. Apple does need more of my money I guess.

ODD: Make it a blu ray drive at least, or just keep the DVD drive, I don't feel like whipping out an external drive every single time i need to access old data or buy a new piece of software.

SD Reader? Yeah its really nice to have.

My 1080p streams look just fine. I dunno what podunk ISP you're using, but if you have 20mbps+ and plug your pucks in via ethernet the quality is fine. WiFi+DSL will look like crap, sure, but that's why I'm not a peasant. :)

Its not the speed thats the problem ( My Internet is pretty amazing though. Worth the 150 a month ).

Its the actual content you get off the iTunes store, or stream off netflix, that kind of thing. None of it is lossless.

If you have a great TV and really nice home audio system ( I do ), theres a HUGE difference between Blu Ray and Streamed content.

I have about 10 grand into my home audio system, and a couple very nice TVs scattered around my house.

That's why I still buy Blu Rays and CDs ( Music ), because I want all of that equipment to sound the best that it can.

I use it also and it's the reason I'm going to opt for the wired KB with NumPad, plus I prefer a wired KB.

I have wired KBs all around my house, except for my gaming rig and my iMac in the LR.

And I always say " I'm gonna go all wireless ", until once every couple months when the batteries die :(

AAA batteries are like gold at my place ;)

My 40Mbps DSL works great, thanks. But that phrase...are you from Mpls?

Bluray video is not lossless, either. HD video is compressed over 50x before it gets to you. And the transfer of film to video, even at 1080p24 for most BDs, is a lossy process.

Not that I disagree with your point, I prefer BDs also. Need to plug in my new player, see if it communicates with my projector better.

I've have wireless mice for years, mostly Logitech but recently got a Magic Apple one and really love it on my G5 PM. But the KB is a different thing, your not moving it all the time and for me I don't mind the lead if it means never changing batteries.

Back to the iMac I just think we'll see the same design for 2012 and a new design will come in 2013. JMO.

Oh and I just saw this report...
