Cheap as chips these days. Seriously, you don't want any computer (even a desktop that may be always on) without SSD

why?

I have had SSD's before and have not been all the impressed with them. Yes, they are faster and load a little quicker, but for the price premium I could wait a few more seconds for things to load.

I am only a newbie who is anxiously waiting on the iMac update but my market research would show that Apple have always been at the front when it comes to spec. The current iMac is almost 500 days old and believe it or not the competition are now only starting to offer iMac equivelants or close. sure you can buy PC's at half the price but at half the spec ( forget about custom builds) or the PC's with similar spec is only approx £150 cheaper if that, throw in Nvidia GT??? and your there.

My guess is

sandy-ivy, 8GB RAM min, Nvidia Graphics(as per MBP), HD 1080p + screen, 128 GB SSD + 1TB hd

if the update doesnt come close to this then i will seriously consider buying the current model , but obviously at a lower price

You got that backwards.

Apple tends to be far behind the competition performance and spec wise. Its called " apple tax ". They start out equal to the PC makers, then fall behind because they wont do any updates for almost 2 years.

I miss the days when Mac news wasn't overshadowed by the iPhone and such. Anyway, I look forward to a new iMac. :D

If you think any computer is just a computer and any OS is just an OS, then maybe. Most of us think that OSX > Windows, and than an iMac > some cheap tower PC and monitor.

Well having owned PC's and Macs for well over a decade, I can tell you that neither system is perfect for everyone, Macs are better for some people, and PC's are better for lots of people.

And why does everyone compare Macs with a 400 dollar Gateway Tower? Why can't you people accept that high end PC's do exist?

And as far as OSX vs Windows goes, its to the point where one isn't better than the other, its all about personal preference, an OS is nothing more than a means to get work or play accomplished. I use my PC's for work and heavy lifting, and gaming, and I've tended to use my Macs as living room media machines and daily drivers.

I see what you're saying. The thing with the Apple releases is that it tends to work as long as you can time your purchases with when they are released. I agree that the knock is that they aren't updated enough, even minor "speed bump" updates would help.

Sure they do, but they tend to lose their cost advantage over Mac hardware, and they still run Windows which is not what most people on this forum are interested in running.

And, yes, they are more upgradable, but it's been years since I've done a meaningful upgrade (more than a memory bump) on a desktop computer. YMMV.

As a family, we're a lot happier now that we have gaming consoles (PS3, Wii) separate from the family computers. I would never go back to playing games on a PC or Mac.

Perhaps because in the high-end PC market, studies show that Apple has a commanding marketshare. :D

Studies show that PC sales are strongest when the price is under $500, so perhaps people are tailoring their arguments to that fact to present a more favorable scenario.

Looking forward to the "imminent" update! ;)

I've been using an iMac late 2006 and need the 2012 desperately...

QUESTION: (maybe off topic, only for the UK)

Is there any evidence of buying an iMac (or anything related) from an Apple Retail store where u could split the payment between an Apple Gift Card and the remaining on a Credit Card?

The thing is that I would have to purchase the iMac with a CC but my limit won't cover the whole top-of-the-range 27". I've heard there are Apple Gift cards in-store (not the iTunes ones) so I was wondering if anyone have used them before for part payment.

I've researched a little and there are not such gift cards available online. There isn't any option of splitting payment between 2 credit cards online (at least for the UK apple store)

Thanks in advance!! ;)

It has been proven that after Jobs parted to a better place, Apple has become really slow when it comes to everything that is not portable/mobile...

If Steve was instrumental in the regular releases of new Macintosh hardware, he should have had a new iMac and Mac Pro in the pipeline before he died and therefore his death should not have resulted in the extended waits we've seen to date.

Not at all, remember he was pretty sick in his last days, so probably he devoted himself to have mobile/portable devices ready, in units they sell much more of those than iMacs and Mac Pros.
