It's such a great looking computer, I try not to go to Apple's site and tempt myself to buy the outdated model. Can't wait for the update...

IMO this 'refresh' will be along the lines of the MBP, no physical change, apart from maybe a new LCD without the glass but no retina. I think will still have DVD and the same ports the current one has but with Ivy Bridge CPUs, more RAM, bigger HDD and better video, oh and of course USB3. We will keep FW and Ethernet. JMO.

How likely do you guys think it is that Apple will do what they did with the MacBook Pro - and by that, I mean spec bumps across the board with a high-end Retina option without the ODD and with a thinner form factor? Also, how likely does anyone think it is that they'll go for Flash storage over normal hard drives? While it's not necessary for the purpose of making the machine thinner, which I believe to be pointless in a desktop, it'd seem that it's cheaper to manufacture flash storage and it's possible to get more of it in the same space as you would a standard hard drive. Thoughts? I'm not saying that this is what they should do, but maybe it's a possibility.

******* you, clown. "Old folks". We're the people who actually use our machines for work, not online games. Get out of your mothers basement and experience the larger world.

Nothing there is "helpful" just different
1. Thinner- it's a freaking DESKTOP. iMac is thin enough now.
2. more space for other components. Really? what would you like?
3. User -replaceable SSD/HDD. WTF is the matter with you. Apple would not make it user-replaceable if they could help it. and who really wants to spend the money for this very expensive per/TB tech
4. Lower price point - Lke that's really going to happen
5. Weight - how often do you carry your iMac (if you own one) around? What, that couple of ounces too much for you?

I think it's time for your medicine.

optical drive

I, for one, would hope they keep they optical drive. It is a sort of necessary for things like iMovie and iDVD. I use it to rip our DVDs for putting them on my child's iPod Touch. I back up our photo library to DVDs.

Why on earth would you want to remove it from a desktop computer? They can make the thing thicker if need be, after all ITS A FREAKING DESKTOP!

I remember having to buy an external floppy drive for my Pismo. While I understood phasing that out, dropping optical support at this point would be asinine. When I want to burn home movies to a disc, or back up photos, I don't what to be sitting on 50 little USB drives.

Adding an external DVD drive would also clutter up the desktop. In every picture I've seen of Apple promoting the iMac, form and style seem to be a big part. Do you think they really want to clutter that up with making everyone add the DVD drive to the desktop?

P.S. I've been waiting to buy one since January. My MacBook runs fine, but it is time to replace my snowball iMac G4 :)

Wow I'm shocked

As of this writing 9 pages of posts totalling over 200 individual entries and not one hater bashing the source of this news.

With the number of people that normally bash this specific source as completely bogus... I had to read every post to believe it myself.

Perhaps it's the desperation of waiting so long for Apple to leave bread crumbs. Maybe the haters are all out today.

Who knows? It's refreshing to see adult behavior, that's for sure.

I'm rather eager myself, to see what's in store. :)

My G4 Mac mini server is starting to make funny noises.

Please Apple, release a new one, and give me an excuse to replace it before it dies altogether.

Mountain Lion isn't even available on a disc.

I hope they axe the Disc drive. Such a waste of space.

I don't. Mine died on my iMac and I didn't realize how much I missed the damned thing.

My iMac doubles as a bedroom tv....no watching dvd's

Ripping music cds.... um, hard to do without a drive.... not that I do this very often, but none the less... now if they offered a cheap $49 external burner, me would like much

One thing thats always puzzled me is how Apple have got away with producing all of the iMacs without having any workstation ergonomic features built in what-so-ever.

From the original Bondi Blue to the current 2011 iMac, not one can be adjusted for height. Plenty of horizontal swivel on the hinge, but for us in the EU, there are regulations around display screen equipment of which Apple kit just fails outright. You have to get a VESA mount kit for it or stack your mac on a pile of old Yellow Pages directories to raise it up a bit.

Design Style, 10/10

Design Ergonomics - 0/10 - Fail.

That's all about to change.

The new redesigned 2012 iMacs wil have an ergonomic stand that folds down so you can position the screen horizontally, to allow for full ergonomic use of the all new iMac touch screen. That's why they've been having problems with screen laminations; the new touchscreen presented new factory problems, but they've straightened those out now. That's also why OSX has been becoming more iOS like over the past two years. With the all new 2012 iMac touchscreen, OSX will compete head on with Windows 8 for tablet-like experience.

Remember, you heard it here first.

You're welcome.

I've played with very large (40" -> 60") prototypes like that going back a number of years. Google Earth is a *blast* on a giant (more or less) horizontal touch screen.

I'm getting the update when it comes regardless, having this capability would be a very nice bonus.

I want one feature - Retina display. Probably won't get it though.

Yeah unlikely, but we might get a less gloss LCD screen.

I'm just hoping it has USB3 since I just bought a new USB3 HDD for backups and to do the migration ten times quicker than USB2. Which will help allot since on USB2 it could take more than 12 hours for my system.

I'm still betting the new iMac will follow the lines of the MBP, Ivy Bridge update with USB3 and better/faster CPUs, i7 standard on 27" models along with 8Gb of RAM, bigger HDDs with cheaper SSD options. Price points will stay about the same, maybe lower in some markets.

Clearly it's all about profit when you have a few people approving apps for the store, I suspect that this new shift is what Steve jobs wanted in the past and that was to make products for consumers.

I have to agree that it was all foreshadowed. If you listen carefully to Steve Jobs speak at some of the D Conferences.. He basically hinted at everything that is happening now. Doing away with the file system is the one that has me scared the most though.

Again, I may just be old.. but I don't see how things are going to get "better" by doing away with the traditional OS. I am just scratching my head as to why apple seems to have given up on staying current with Desktop Hardware, or, being very casual about updating their hardware regularly.

I still think the Macbooks require an optical drive, it is a must for a desktop, like you say, it is a desktop! There is no room to really waste, it is there for people that need it. And an external dvd drive for the Mac Mini, iMac or Macbooks just defeats the purpose of being streamlined.

Reminds me if someone wanting the thinnest television possible and then stick it on a bulky console and not the wall.

It's not subjective when you look outside your immediate needs and think of other users and their needs.

I agree with this, I often hear people act like something still widely used should be removed because "they" no longer need it. Nothing is lost by keeping it while removing it stops people for using it how they would like.

At last, an imminent rumor about computer. Though I'd still prefer MacPro, but hey .. at least it's not another toy story ;)

It matters to me, until Apple opens up the iTunes store. A lot of music that I listen to must be bought on CD from the UK. I don't listen to Top 40 trash.

Removing the OD drive would help in several ways.

1. Thinner. (Not that it really matters with a product like this, but thinner is nicer)
2. More space for other components
3. User-replaceable SSD/HDD?
4. Lower price point.
5. Weight (i.e. less to ship, carry, etc.)

Keeping the OD drive around for a few of the old folks is just stupid. By a $30 external if you need to use your precious discs. Mountain Lion is download only. I don't think Apple even sells disc-based software in their stores anymore. It's time to move on.

I think this is likely, but the high end model with a retina display will be called "Mac Pro". I'm not sure we're going to see the Mac Pro as we know it ever again (that is not to infer negativity, rather than I think they are looking at different options).

Apple already said a new Mac Pro tower was coming later in 2013.

----------

Seems so.

So if there is an imminent upgrade then it will be a mainboard revision only.

The supply lines are almost empty of certain models. And the machine hasn't been updated for 500+ days. There is a VERY GOOD chance that the machine is possibly redesigned...because otherwise, they could have done the same thing they did with the Mac Pro and silent upgrade it and just put a 'new' banner across the icon and updated the specs.

They wouldn't wait 500+ days for just a 'mainboard' revision. No logical sense in that. Something obviously changed, whether it's the form factor, the screen, etc. to have these delays.

50% chance simple, silent upgrade of existing models to ivybridge / USB 3.0 next week. no change in form factor or display density.

40% chance a post Iphone 5 event

10% chance we will get the whiplash of new macs followed by the iphone - but it does not feel at all likely.
"We don't like to be predictable."
