It's still inside. It's still a component that can be removed to make it thinner. Please see the iPhone 5 where they have apparently changed the dock design (after 10 years!) to save on space

There is no need to make the iMac thinner. Last time I checked my desktop sat at a desk. Maybe I'm different than you but I don't carry my desktop around with me.

Well the current iMacs on the market have a 2GB Video Option and you don't see that in a Laptop now do you? So they are not laptops in a large case I disagree with you.

It's still a mobile graphics GPU (AMD Radeon HD 6970M)..hence the 'M' designation of Mobile. Doesn't matter that it's 2 GB...it's still not as powerful as the equal card that is not a mobile card.

So yes, it's still using a laptops GPU...and yes there are 2 GB mobile chips in laptops..like this one..

Alienware - Dual 2GB GDDR5 AMD Radeon™ HD 7970M - CrossFireX™ Enabled

So you are incorrect.

iMacs are laptops in a large case...otherwise they would not have to use a 'M' series chip.

Oh yes!! Good news. If come out now I think I will buy one right after is released. My core2duo 2.4 MBP is quite slow now, even with the SSD and 8g RAM... But still I have always the eternal debate about iMac or MacPro... It's dificult to decide!

You don't carry TV's around with you either but if you've noticed TV's...they've gotten lighter and thinner over the years also.

MacPro is not coming till most likely late late 2013...and honestly is an over-priced machine for most peoples needs now considering how good tech has gotten.

So unless you are doing the highest end 3D or Hollywood graphics, I think the iMac bar none is the better value. Most of my freelance graphic/motion graphic friends use iMacs or MBPros (and they only have 1 GB GPUs on the laptops).

I'll believe it when I see it, although that happened to the mac pro's and well we won't even go on what happened the latest "update". :p

Yes your right. However we are not impacted negatively by the switch from CTR to LCD/Plasma. These technologies only benefit us and there is no need for CTR's anymore. There is still a need for optical drives and there is no reason to take it out of the desktop.

Besides, the iMac doesn't need to be any thinner than it is. Like modern day TVs it can already be wall mounted and does not take up a significant space on the desktop itself. You cannot directly compare the slimming of tvs to the absolutely unnecessary further slimming of the iMac

Oh I know...I was just saying that logic doesn't seem to apply when it comes to device makers marketing thin.

I would rather have the iMac be like the HP-Z1...I want an iMac that I can swap the graphics card out of. The iMac really is archaic when you see the Z1 and how well designed that machine is inside and out...work of art.

In terms of the optical drive...that is subjective. I work in a post house. Nothing comes to us on CD/DVD anymore..files are just too big. If they are small, then they are just on a thumb drive. We havent touched discs in ages.

Other than committing a crime, Clayton Morris just committed the biggest blunder he could have possibly committed. Clayton Morris just proved he is no more in the loop, has no more access, than any random blogger.

When the Wall Street Journal talks about Apple rumors they speak confidently, with the voice they have access, they are in the loop. Clayton Morris' embarrassing backtracking now claiming that "imminent" can meet several weeks, an estimate anyone on this forum could have just as easily made, is just laughable. He's just guessing. And guessing means he doesn't know and wasn't considered important enough to be told. And in his position, that's the one thing someone should never admit.

I don't know why these people haven't learned by now that people who do their own publicity handling have a fool for a client. Use the services of a professional, please.

I will give the man some credit as he is right, soon the new imacs will be on the market.

I think Retina 27" is out of the question. I think the pixel density/price ratio is too high for Apple. (But you never know!)

I would like to see the iMac finally get rid of its aluminum "chin" and look more like the Thunderbolt display.

You never know...everyone said that about the iPad and how much it would raise the price to $1000....and we saw how that turned out.

Order in massive volume and price comes down on components.

Or they could do the same thing as the MBPro....normal and retina (which is entirely possible).

Sorry, I am not making this point from
a position of authority BUT doesn't the CPU also have something to do with real world performance? From my own personal needs (large excel files, macros etc. as well as multitasking across numerous enterprise platforms) the CPU (and RAM), I would imagine would have a greater impact on performance. And the iMac DESKTOP CPUs and RAM ease of upgradeability make them anything other than laptops in a large case. But I may be wrong.

What's an iMac? C'mon, I want more iPhone and iPad rumors! Who needs a big, clunky desktop in a post-PC era when I can do all my HD rendering, editing and design work right on my iPad's amazing, brilliant, new "new" "Retina" display? Desktops? Pfft.

/sarcasm

FINALLY, this site is talking about APPLE COMPUTERS, you know the things that bought Apple on the map IN THE FIRST PLACE...

I don't think you have the ability to upgrade the CPU on the iMac...easily that is. If you do, then it's something that is not an easy thing to do.

Only the RAM and Hard Drive can be easily upgradable.

You can go out to a site like iFixit and see the inside guts of an iMac.

External drives. I have large stacks of bare 2GB drives and a docking station. I eliminated DVD backups years ago, and shredded all my disks. Now bare drives are my disks.

A nicely incorporated internal ODD with discs holding 4.7GB of data, or stacks of bare drives that hold less than half that amount with an external docking station? Ya, that makes total sense.

As for removing the ODD, Apple shouldn't just yet. It's a dying medium but it's too soon. They're still in the MBPs which were just updated and if there were any machine that needed extra space, it would be those.

I only use it maybe half a dozen times a year but those times are the only way to get that data and without it I'd be SOL. I also still prefer CDs to iTunes because of the sound quality.

I saw someone working on their iMac at a Starbucks recently.

I wish I were joking...

Must of been when Verizon had their extended outage up this way. One lousy mattress fire under a bridge and it took out FIOS for a slew of towns.
Verizon was too cheap to put the cables inside metal pipes, they used PVC and it melted everything. Took days and days to restore service including all th emergency 911 systems and fire and police systems.
Verizon was so clueless they couldn't even tell how many customers were affected.
Yup, our country is secure.

It wasn't even just FIOS, using gift cards at local shops were out as well. They must use Verizon to authenticate or something. Very strange.
