I get what you're saying. I also think it was equally scumming for Apple to charge an extra $100 for a more storage when the part cost them an extra $12 bucks.

I think it sucks. It it’s business. That’s what a business is in for. To make money. Just like Walmart was asking out of a truck at first. Now look at them. It’s business. Nobody forces someone one to buy it. They just put it out there. How is it the business fault that someone decided to buy it? The consumer decides to buy it.

All you have to do is pull you SIM from your existing phone and insert it in your new one. No fee!

Do not turn your new phone on until you have swapped SIM cards. You will not have to pay an upgrade fee.

The problem with that is, they change the size of the sims with most model changes..

It have been about three phones since they changed from the nano sim. When they did I bought a nano sim from eBay or Amazon and called ATT to have them move service from my old SIM to the new and there was still no upgrade fee. If you have an account, ATT will give you a SIM card for free.

The price or value of an item is not always based on its cost to the manufacturer, but also its utility. For the consumer, 256GB can be worth $150 more than 64GB. Therefore if consumers are willing to accept that difference, why should it be priced differently? It also doesn't make sense to price the 64GB at say $999 and the 256GB at $1,049. At that price, virtually no one would buy the 64GB model. The price difference allows Apple to sell many of the 64GB at a lower margin, and a few of the 256GB, but at a higher margin.

Aw I see. So if the sim is the same as the 7+ I can just move it over and no fee?

What are you talking about? Over ten years of iPhone releases, and many more generations than that, Apple has used three SIM sizes. We've been on nano-SIMs since the iPhone 5.

Wow. You learn something every day. Did not know this.

Riddle me this though, if the $25 charge shows up with the preorder, and I take my sim out of my 7 Plus and insert inside my X, how will they know not to charge me the $25 or waive the fee?

If you ordered through the carrier the fee is unavoidable and will be included in the upgrade cost.

You got to order through Apple. Then when you get your phone from Apple, do not follow the carrier’s included instructions and remove the sim that comes in the new phone and insert yours. You are done.

It will be the same size as we have been on the nano-sim for a while now. Most important is when you get your phone from Apple, do NOT follow the instructions and turn the new phone on until AFTER you remove the SIM that came with it. Destroy the included sim as if anyone tried to use it it will move your service to their phone. Insert the SIM card from you existing phone and you are done.

Be careful as my friend accidentally turned his new phone on while trying to remove the SIM and it was too late. :(

Ok but I am instore pickup. Which if I remember right they made me activate it in the store? I can chose to not to right and just take it home. I don’t know tho I think they make you activate it before you leave..

If I turn my phone on when I first get it , just to look at the screen and admire it, ( I will be at work and will still be needing to use my old phone) , then when I get home insert my sim etc, will they then charge me the fee? Must my sim be entered before I even turn it on at all? Thank you

You can let them “assist” you with setting it up if you wish but if not you can walk out the door with your new sealed iPhone.

Not to worry.

Ya don’t turn on or you will be paying the fee we just found out...

The second you turn on your new phone with the included SIM card it will move you phone service to that new phone. You MUST at least remove the SIM card BEFORE turning it on or you will move your service AND pay a upgrade fee.

If you want to admire you new phone and yet not ready to make the switch, just pull the included SIM card out first.

I don’t know about other providers, but in the past when I turned on a phone with the SIM it was shipped with still installed, the SIM automatically activated, and deactivated the SIM in the old phone.

So maybe try popping the pre-installed SIM out before turning it on. I’ll try that when my X arrives Friday, but I’m expecting shenanigans.

Ah yes, the free market lie.

Please tell me what carrier that is available in my area allows me to buy a new phone and not have an upgrade fee on a newly released device?

Quick hint, it is none of them. I either have to pay the upgrade fee, or wait an unknown amount of time for the manufacturer to release a “SIM free” edition, which even then may lead to shenanigans with activation.

There is no such thing as a free market. Consumers have a limited choice, and the barriers to entry for a cellular provider are so huge it is unlikely a new competitor will show up.

Ever notice how when one of the providers changes something (like adding an upgrade fee, they haven’t existed forever), within a couple months most of them have it? That’s called the real world anti-consumer market, and it’s what we live with. Especially with telecom in the US.
The free market lie? Is it not true that you are free to take your business elsewhere if you do not like the fees from your carrier? Click me.

The problem is our entitled society feels as though everything should be given to them. My point was that you are not being forced into this fee. Your carrier provides a service for a fee. You have the option to consume and pay the fee or you are welcome to stick with your existing phone or find a carrier that will not charge you a fee. it is not worth getting your panties all bunched up over. You have no clue about the real world which is evidenced by your letting a measly upgrade fee send you into some strange e-tantrum. Spare me the faux rage.

Millennials. smh.gif

I agree, Verizon charges $30. Which I think is crap because I buy using the upgrade program through Apple. WHY does Verizon get to charge when I’m only using them for the service, they did nothing to help me order the phone.

Why? Because they ask for it and you pay it.

Call them and demand that they waive that fee or you go elsewhere and then if they refuse actually go elsewhere!

Nice assumptions there buddy. Unfortunately I was born a couple decades before the millennials.

If you read my other posts I point out that like many in the US I have limited choice in telecom providers. Where I live I can use Verizon, or AT&T for cellular. Which one of those doesn’t charge an upgrade fee again?

I’m actually in an unusual location that has a local wired provider. Strangely Suddenlink and AT&T in my area provide significantly better service here for lower cost than in many other areas of the US. In a market with competition that is what happens. Cellular has limited competition due to the licensing requirements. In reality it should be handled as a natural monopoly. Have one organization that handles the infrastructure, then allow service providers to sell service on that infrastructure to consumers.

The carriers would HATE that, as then they would really have true competition.

Actually it is because we ALL have allowed them to add new fees each year without protest so what motivation do they have not to continue? None

Entitled...really? I see it as one of the perks of living in a first world country. We consumers keep their businesses open so they should be the ones grateful to us!

It might be true that all carriers are charging but I can tell you from personal experience that they make exceptions if you ask. I always ask and point out that if nothing else than doing as a customer courtesy for being a loyal customer be the reason. It works.
