A 10.5" iPad Pro doesn't really make sense to me.

However, if they fit a 10.5" OLED display in the current 9.7" chassis with an on-screen fingerprint sensor, then it makes sense to me.

This would be 2018.

That's a long time away.

I was commenting more on your reference to fragmentation with the introduction of the new 10.5" form factor rather than the timing of the next iPad.
Is there still a chance of Apple releasing a slightly upgraded iPad Pro 12.9 in September with the 9.7 specs?

There never was a chance that Apple would release an iPad update in September. Fall iPad releases have always been in late October or November.

I'd say if there is no new announcements in September, then there will be no iPad releases until Spring 2017.

I also think that even if new iPad is released this Fall, that the current 12.9 Pro is a great device that will serve you well for the next several years.

So do you want to wait two months to be sure there is no new update, or do you want to buy it now and enjoy using the iPad for those two months?

This question will end all of these enigmatic questions throughout thousands of years: "Are you a serious buyer?"

A 10.5" iPad Pro doesn't really make sense to me.

9to5Mac believes the 9.7" iPad will replace the iPad Mini as the entry-level unit and the Mini will be dropped. Kind of makes sense as folks who have an iPhone Plus have less need for an iPad Mini (I got rid of my Mini once I bought my Plus) and even the 4.7" model encroaches on mini territory.

Very unlikely. I wasn't expect a refresh until next year and the latest rumor supports that even more.

Yes I'm a serious buyer and a smart one too :p
A dumb buyer would buy one now knowing there is a possibility that the ipad pro 2 could be out in a month for the same price!

I get it, It's a great device but why not save your money and wait a couple weeks.

PC Advisor still lists it as a possibility https://www.google.ca/amp/www.pcadv...e-price-specs-rumours-leaks-10.5-3641106/?amp

I don't know where that website is getting September from. Look at macrumor's buyers guide.

You'll see 9.7 iPads have always been released in October/November (other than when they were released in March/April), and 12.9 Pro was released in November.

So if you want to wait two months, at least 7-8 weeks, be my guest. Just don't kid yourself it's just a month/few weeks.

I wasn't referring to replacing the iPad Mini. More like why introduce a 10.5" which is barely larger than 9.7"...? Unless you retain the form factor of the 9.7" but have smaller bezels and a in-display fingerprint sensor / home button.

I totally agree. If the iPhone Plus makes the mini redundant, as some people are arguing, then having 10.5 and 9.7 iPads at the same time is even more redundant.

If I'm not mistaken the iPad Pro 12.9 was announced September and then released November.

That's true. On the other hand, if Apple holds an event in September and doesn't say anything about the iPads, that doesn't guarantee that there will be no iPads before Spring 2017. In the past, Apple has held iPhone only events in September, only to hold another iPad focused event later. It's even possible for them to do a quiet update, where they don't do any announcement event, and one day updated iPads appear in stores. This is sometimes done with a minor update, like just adding better camera and true tone, for example. ;)

I hate marketing.

9to5Mac feels this is likely, as well. Might be an early way to test the embedded home button / fingerprint sensor before it goes into real mass production with the iPhone 8.

I'm sure it's getting tiring that Apple has "Victoria Secret" and can't just be straight up with us for upcoming devices....maybe it's just me. (Edited))

Dammit, the iPad Mini is a really great form factor. I wish people would stop speculating that they are going to kill it. Either charge more for the damn thing or just keep it around. The 9.7 and 12.9 are great too, but they each serve their own purpose. The Mini is the only form factor that is truly portable ... I carry it in my jacket pocket all the time.
