As I understand it, OWC tests all their upgrades before offering them. Thus the fact that their 256 GB upgrade kit for the iMac only includes the memory sticks and re-sealing tape would seem to indicate that none of the modifications you mention are needed. But if you're curious, you can always call OWC tech support and ask them directly.

I'm sure they do work - what I'm saying is that they likely don't work to Apple internal standards. OWC isn't necessarily going to tell you that the machine experiences more thermal throttling, the fans run louder, or there's a buzz or whine on the audio circuits. Further, I'm just advancing a technical reason for the difference. There are plenty on this thread purely convinced that the problem has to do with money.

What's the fuss over 256GB DRAM when workstations these days take 2TB DRAM?

Is there something special and unique about the logic board when you order with 256GB?
Probably just crippled in firmware on purpose to enhance profits for Apple. Just throw it away and buy another $10,000 computer - just like we are supposed to do yearly with AirPods!

Yes, claim. Why? Because it's another imaginary problem they can pretend to have so they can bash Apple. It's funny how an issue will come up with an iPhone, iOS or Mac that affects a very small percentage of users, yet online a majority of people will claim to have experienced that exact problem. How do you reconcile an issue that affect 1% of users, yet in an online community 50% or more say they have experienced that issue?

Wow you are blowing this out of proportion. Everyone I have seen who asks for 32GB ram uses it. Not to mention, VERY few people even ask for it. You are being blinded by the people you see in front of you.

The VAST majority of uses are not online in forums complaining about issues.

The type of people who complain on forums are likely more power users than your average joe blow.

This should be painfully obvious.

Hardly. It’s an observation that can be proven in only a few minutes browsing these (or any other) Apple related forum. If you can’t see it then I’m not sure how to explain something so “painfully obvious”.

For the set of people who truly need 256GB of RAM the $5k price tag isn't hard to justify anyway.

Both hopefully coming soon (they say this year, I guess that could be Dec 31st though).
Unless they give up and cancel it altogether. You know it must be hell trying to put out a normal, rectangular, standards-compliant, upgradeable, open able computer that the Mac Pro needs to be in order to have any point in existing at all, with Jony Ive sneaking around the halls trying to turn every design into some kind of MOMA exhibit.

Think about it. Jony might threaten to quit if they release a rectangular, upgradeable Mac Pro, and Apple couldn't care less about the Mac Pro's target audience, compared to how much they obviously value Jony considering how much they've signed over to him.

And now that they've killed AirPower, why not this politically-impossible computer that they don't even believe in.

Or to use another example, Airpods are extremely popular despite many people here hating on them for all sorts of reasons ranging from sound quality to price, none of which seem to matter to the tens of millions of people actually buying them.

It just goes to show that the critics here represent a small but extremely vocal (and increasingly bitter) segment of Apple’s user base and as such, is not really representative of its overall user base.

As a general rule of thumb, the more they complain about something, the more I take it as a sign that Apple is doing something right. The more they claim Apple is doomed, the more I believe Apple will go on to be very successful.

The haters are kinda predictable that way.

Did you somehow miss the fact that I said most users are NOT on forums?

Let's act like you didn't, somehow, miss the entire point of my response. Since it'll only take you a few minutes to prove that there are tons of people complaining about wanting 32GB ram, and most of them won't even use it....

Go ahead, let's see it.

Did you somehow miss where I was talking about people in forums? The sheer arrogance to think I have to conform to your narrative instead of my original point.

Confirm my narrative?! LOL. I was calling out YOUR narrative and how it’s BS.

When you can’t even tell what is your own narrative... that’s when it is scary.

I won’t waste my time with someone who only seems intent on starting an argument where none exists. Find someone else to troll, I will no longer take the bait.

Or 'PROfit' as people have to upgrade to get more memory?

And puzzling as Apple releases an iMac that appears to outperform their iMac Pro. What are they thinking? They are muddying the waters and creating a market that is confusing, and makes no sense. Sure the Xeon should be more capable, but with the thermal issues it's probably more like putting a NASCAR engine in a Chevy Cruze, and having to restrict the horsepower so the frame isn't warped or destroyed by the power. So is the new iMac Apple's way of admitting they don't understand their market anymore? I'm stumped...
