    Get the cheapest 2.5" SATA SSD you can find and plop it in a drive sled with appropriate adapter.

    M.2 and MacBook SSD's would be faster, but you specifically said "cheapest".

    There are 1TB SSUBX on eBay for around $650-700. Hard to beat OEM. OWC is selling the Aura Pro for around $650. If you get OEM make sure you don’t get SSUAX (difference is x2 vs x4 with the “B”).
