1) se non hai già a portata di mano alcuni degli strumenti necessari, questo compito di scambio di carte potrebbe essere troppo ambizioso;

HI Chancha, thanks for the reply, I'm familiar with disassembling and reassembling computers even though it's been a long time since I've done it. I saw the Polysoft guide and there's nothing particularly difficult, the problem would have arisen if I had to solder some components, but there's nothing here. However, as I said, since it's not something I've done in a long time, I would still have to buy a disassembly kit. At this point, however, the main problem is finding a computer that can help me restore the Mac Studio, there aren't many Apple users around here :D.

I did not use Apple Configurator because when I connected the studio to the MacBook in DFU mode it picked up in Finder and I did the restore from there.

Which MacBook did you connect it to

My problem is that if it doesn't work, then I don't know what to do. I need the computer every day for work. 😬

Did you get it for less on ali?

I did the restore via my M1 mac but also tried with my 2019 Intel Mac and both picked it up in Finder. I bought the SSD for $550NZD cheaper than Polysoft from AliExpress for the 8TB

I could try, and eventually, I'll find a workaround to get a new Mac and perform the restore.
I've looked on AliExpress, but the prices are the same. Do you have a link?

AliExpress prices have gone up. When i purchased, they were having a winter sale so i got further $200 off

I have a 2022 Mac Studio M1 512GB. If I buy the base 2TB memory size, will I receive just one module?
According to the web site, that's how it appears to be.

For maximum R/W speed, order a pair—see below.
All the 2TB configs only use one card, this is how Apple did it and therefore these 3rd party cards have to follow and copy the config.
The first gen M1 Studio used pairs in all configurations. This was so that they could be configured in Apple's "Modified RAID 0" (their terms, not mine) to nearly double the RW speed over a single NAND (double speed for RAID 0 is a theoretical max that is never achieved in the real world).

With later Studios, this was dropped. Turned out that the vast majority of owners don't really care how fast internal storage is—or they just don't know. A speed test of the System drive will tell you how your Studio is configured 3800–4400 or so means one NAND only while 7800 or so means that there's a pair (as in my M2 Ultra with 8TB storage onboard).
'
Those of us who do care about R/W speed should only order in pairs.

I suspect you are confusing between the number of NANDs on card, vs the number of cards?

The slower speed on the M2 gen base model Studio was due to using higher density NANDs across all Mac models (256GB), so that on the M2 Max base Mac Studio the one card has only 2 NANDs of 256GB that totals to 512GB. With M1 Max, M4 Max, the base 512GB still use only one card, but have 4 NANDs of 128GB.

The speed jump that you'd expect going from 1 card 4 NANDs to 2 card with 8 NANDs is there, but approached diminishing return so it's hardly discussed (I think it is like, from 7000 ish to 8000 ish in best case scenarios). The difference is only obvious between M2 Max base 512GB vs 1TB, 2 NAND vs 4 NAND on the same card, like 3-4000 vs 6000.

Over in the Apple self-repair guide for the Mac Studios, I captured the bits that detail the number of cards:

To summerize:

M1:
1 card: 512GB
2 cards: 1TB / 2TB / 4TB / 8TB

M2:
1 card: 512GB / 1TB / 2TB
2 cards: 4TB / 8TB

M4/3:
1 card: 512GB / 1TB / 2TB
2 cards: 4TB / 8TB / 16TB

So yeah I was slightly wrong, the M1 gen split was between 512GB and 1TB, only then in M2 the split moved to between 2 and 4TB.

I am getting confused, perhaps also because I need to translate this into Italian. On the M1 Max, is the difference between upgrading from 512GB to a single 1TB card very different from upgrading to two 4TB or 8TB cards? If the difference is minimal, I might be able to overlook it. My main problem is with program installations. I mainly use the Adobe suite, which takes up a lot of space, and I often have to uninstall one program to use another.

2TB will get you around 6GB/s and the 4TB / 8TB options will get you 7.4GB/s on the M1 Max until you run out of SLC (cache) with very large file transfers.

Then you will be getting 1.5GB/s on the 2TB (when running out of SLC) and 3.2GB/s on the 4TB / 8TB options.

You can install applications to external SSDs to mitigate this problem on desktop computers like the Mac Studio. It supports USB4 (40Gb/s) so you can expect around 3.2-3.4GB/s depending on SSD (and if the NVMe SSD is at least double channel PCIe v3).

Thank you so much, 2 TB would be enough for me. Yes, I often have large files, but if I can save money, I can also wait a little longer 😂. The external drive idea is interesting, I could actually try that! In any case, I did a little more research and saw that a lot of space is taken up by system data.

No confusion. I knew exactly what I was talking about as did you. NAND can refer to one chip or multiples on a single card. People have been using the terms interchangeable for a decade.

It was nice of you to post the breakdown on the various Studio configurations. I'd not seen that in print before.

40 GB/s is theoretical maximum that includes 8GB/s for video. Realistic top data speeds are closer to 27–31.

Although one would think that's fast enough, I do quite a bit of testing booted from USB4 externals. The speed difference between that and booting from my System drive on my Studio M2 Ultra is quite noticeable.

For storing files and libraries that do not need to be on the System drive including AppleMusic, USB 4 externals are fine.

I'm feeling the need for an upgrade, not going for USB 4.2/TB5 yet. I will hold out for the M5, due next year.

It's fine for loading applications.

Don't act like you can't do actual work because of it. Not that long ago we used to switch 5.25-inch floppy disks and had no internal storage other than RAM.

Funny you mentioned this, I was just watching a YT, where someone was installing windows 1.0 and he had to switch multiple floppies - brought back memories to be sure

Not for nothing, but I have an TB5 drive, and its as fast as my internal drive, and in some circumstances, even faster - if you want to believe the benchmarking apps. My point is that if the internal drive is fast enough to get your work done, then an external drive will be as well.

A TB5 drive is only as fast as the internal if your Mac supports USB 4.2 such as the M4 Mini Pro — and then it certainly is.

It cannot add that speed to a USB 4/TB4/3 Mac. If it could, then I would see it on my TB5 external and hub connected to the M2 Ultra on my desk, too.

It so nice to know that you are looking over my shoulder and watching what I do and how I do it. Oh wait...

Not that long ago was 41–47 years ago when I had a Disk II, also.

On M1 studio : it’s the same as the other ones. One card is up to 2Tb.

M2 512Go is one card but only 2 Nand chips so this one is slower. All the other configuration you have 4 Nand chips on one SSD blade. (8 with 2 blades)

How are Polysoft's orders shipped to the USA? Are they held up by customs? Are they subject to tariffs?

Did anyone got a response from them lately? I am waiting for my 8TB order M3 Ultra and it should have been shipped according to their plan, but there is total silence about my order. Mailed them, no response what so ever. So i am kinda spooked haha
