What are you guys doing with the original SSD? Is it possible to place it in the secondary slot to use for data etc?
You have to keep the original one in case for Warranty. I had a chat to my Apple Business team, they can't see if you swap the SSD or not. So you still have warranty on the device as long you don't break any components by yourself.

@terratoss lf you scroll up the posts you will find our comments and links about the SSD from ALiExpress. I have the 8TB with no issues for almost a month now.
Had a look on AliExpress now, looks great but one small detail is missing. They won't provide any Invoce. The Invoice is a simple sceenshoot (i made a test purchase) which wont be accepted by tax Companys in Europe if you buy it for Business

It will not boot for sure. You need to do a DFU restore, before it will function again
So it means the disk will just need to be wiped, but in theory the DFU restore will not give you incompatibility issues, at least?

I mean I can imagine a scenario such as, the Mac Studio has undergone a few macOS updates that may even involve firmware upgrades with your 3rd party card(s), that the new firmware is not matching what was on the original card (or in other words, the card did not upgrade along with the Mac Studio)

It's a safety feature.

Otherwise you could just take out the storage and place it in another machine and have access to the data.

That's a good point, though I would think having the data encrypted would also prevent it, but I can this being one of those things Apple does extremely well, i.e., protecting the consumer.

My understanding is that the DFU restore will (or at least can) replace the firmware with the version that corresponds to the macOS version you’re installing. (The firmware is in the .ipsw file.)

The end result is that Mac is returned to the same factory fresh condition as when you unboxed it, with your choice of macOS and matching firmware

Hello everyone,

I apologize for the updates, which are much too slow, I admit.
The problem encountered by the PCB factory on the third batch caused a cascade of problems.
Since our kits contain between 4 and 8 NAND chips, even the slightest soldering defect can result in 1 chip being programmed correctly and 7 others being programmed incorrectly, and sometimes the solution was to buy again new NAND chips.

So, august was a very challenging month professionally. We are a small team, and I admit that it was very difficult to prevent my employees from burning out.
I also had to deal with a very serious family issue, which I wouldn't wish on anyone.

We suspended orders, as well as kits for Mac mini M4 and M4 Pro (which have been ready for months), while the PCB factory corrected their manufacturing process (specifically, the supports that hold the PCBs during pick and place and soldering).
We also added testing steps and the ability to reprogram the chips at the factory, as close as possible to the manufacturing process, instead of going back and forth between the factory and our workshop. This is something I had always planned to do to support the increase in volume, but I hadn't planned to do it this summer.

At present, and in all transparency, out of 138 orders from the third batch (corresponding to 200x PCBs), there have been:
- 43 kits delivered (in addition to the 250 already issued in the first two batches)
- 87 that have been manufactured but are still to be delivered and are currently being reprogrammed.
- 8 kits refunded
We have also already had 500 PCBs manufactured for the next batches.

I also had to deal with hundreds of messages, which I handle mostly personaly.
I understand the disappointment of some and I apologize, but I regret that some are drawing inappropriate conclusions (saying that we are running a "scam" or other hasty conclusions).

Best regards to all.
any updates?

My AliExpress kit is already in Germany and should arrive tomorrow or on Wednesday. If the "delivery around October 25" estimate is correct, they must have sent it on the 23rd. I’m sure that by the 27th, a new message will appear on the website about delays, quality issues, or how the necromancer took over the small shop but still no clear answer about when people will actually get their delivery.

Filed my chargeback about a week ago. It is still being "investigated" but the credit card company provisionally returns your money basically as soon as you file the dispute.

What I wasn't expecting was just how much relief I felt to actually start the chargeback and see the money getting returned to me. Between public updates on the website and (sparse) direct correspondence with Gilles, I believe at least three different expected shipping dates were claimed, and all this was after the production issues were disclosed. I was following this thread for a while now and there are just too many direct reports of paying customers getting ignored to be comfortable with this anymore.

For those of you that still have orders in with Polysoft, you should know that they have been continuing to accept small order batches periodically, even as they struggle to fulfill their existing order book. I know this for a fact because, part of how I have been tracking the shipping issues was to stay subscribed for stock updates on several of the drive kit SKUs while my order was pending. On 5 October I received stock updates for M4 and M3 drive kits and sure enough, there they were "available" for order, even stating "in stock" and not something like "shipping on X date" on the product page if you can believe that!

I'm not a lawyer but I can't see how the in stock claim was anything less than false advertising, and it is a very bad sign in my book. It makes me wonder if Polysoft is, whether intentionally or unintentionally, front loading capital by taking in the full purchase amount during preorder to cover unstated deficiencies in the process or business. Poor communication and constantly slipping deadlines do not inspire confidence at all. If you keep taking orders where you're charging the full amount instead of a small order reservation fee, you can probably paper over your problems and string customers along for quite some time, at least until enough people claw back their money.

Maybe the rest of the orders really are just days away this time, but I'm not going to gamble my own money to find out. I know now from the stock updates that you can't trust an "in stock" claim from Polysoft either, so it's not like I can come back and order from them with confidence at a later date even if they appear to get everything sorted out.

One last note (only applies if you are a US customer.) You should know that Polysoft ships UPS for these orders, and UPS in particular has started destroying some packages tied up in customs because of all the tariff nonsense. Other shippers haven't reported an increase in abandoned or destroyed packages, so this is a UPS problem.

My China order arrived today. The boards look well made, and the restore is already running on my Mac Studio. I’ll run some tests before ordering for my two other colleagues.

The situation of Polysoft, Ill wait until Monday for the new message about the delay. My bank advised me to wait until then before filing a chargeback if I don’t receive any tracking number by that time.

Update: 24.10, no tracking number in the Polysoft System.

I already got a collection of screenshoots of the status updates..
I noticed that someone has been saving https://shop.polysoft.fr/en and https://shop.polysoft.fr/fr on the Internet Archive periodically, which should help others gather supporting documentation for their chargebacks. Of course I would recommend keeping your own copy too as well as any direct communications you may have had and the dates and times of those messages.

I got a real kick out of what the update page is saying now:

"Unlike our competitors, we are maintaining our prices for a limited time."

I can see the replies now from Polysoft's competition (as if they care.) "Unlike our competitor, when you give us your money, we will ship to you, in a reasonable time frame, a product that actually exists."

I have problems restoring my Studio. I put my studio in dfu mode and on my mbp i click on restore. then in installs the system (it says), but after 30 minutes or so i hear the bootup chime from my Studio. But after one minute from that nothing happens anymore and i see a big lock in de configurator tool. And then it says that it failed to install because the studio could not be booted.

I tried everything for hours, but nothing works. Also i don't get anything on my monitor. Screen stays black. I don't know what to do anymore 🥲

wait, polysoft did reply or did you order from another shop?

Considering all I find on AliExpress is modules for 900€ and you have to pay customs fees on top of that, it’s not really cheaper anymore right?
Depends how lucky you get. AliExpress have the reseller prices. you will find on taobao and other shops priess for less money. Dont forget if you are EU, aliexpress will show you the price with the tax, only on the last step before the payment they remove the 19% tax and you get the final price.
