Man, some of you (most of you) need a Xanax and a shot of whiskey.

I have an old Mac Pro, and I play World of Warcraft on it with a 7300gt, so I would have liked an 8800.

But, after reading that it probably won't work...I shrugged, took a sip of my Earl Grey (hot) tea, and went back to work.

The fact that some of you are talking about getting a lawyer or "never buying from apple again"... well, first of all your just chest-thumping and lying, and second of all, you're freaking out over something that is pretty minor.

Get over it.

If you are incapable of understanding why we're so upset, then I pity your ignorance. Can't you just go post somewhere else rather than wind people up?

I agree with you! Its not only me who is angry ! Everyone at the Apple forum too and this one!

And also The fact that Apple tests our loyalty.

The Mac Pro was "THE MACHINE" that lured the darkside, ie ME the PC gamer. They gained me and I bought Mac Pro when It just came out
and I "sold" people that Apple is better than Microsoft, after rooting for Microsoft for so many years. I had the most powerful machine up til summer (5 months) that any gamer could have and it was an apple

When better video cards and a game called "CRYSIS" came out to test the current high end PC's , I was ok I can wait... I will wait til apple releases the new video cards because I trusted Apple to not leave us in the dark.

But now I have no where to go!
That inexpensive ibuypower PC fully loaded is tempting! Sell Mac Pro and make a profit while still getting a better gaming machine.

But heres the thing, I still have ONE foot in the APPLE door.
Apple could release the EFi's to us and allow us to upgrade.

But if we don't make a stink about it, why would they spend money to fix something? Make a stink and they have to put money just to shut us up! Corporations are lazy, they do only what is profitable!

If you don't kick up a fuss, nothing gets done - have you ever noticed that?

Sit back, enjoy your tea, and wait for others to make a stand - it's not a bad gameplan!

If you are incapable of understanding why we're so upset, then I pity your ignorance. Can't you just go post somewhere else rather than wind people up?

The problem here is that the older Mac Pro users got hosed with the ATI card. It has consistant over heating and render glitching problems. I've already gone through one and I'm going to have to RMA the second one. The ATI X1900XT card is CRAP. It works for 6 months then dies. This is definitive for the supposed v1 of the card and I've seen posts of some v2 cards doing the same. I've seen posts of users going through 3 or more of these hunks of junk.

Now I've got to go through hell with a low level T1 or T2 apple tech that will have me run diagnostic tests overnight. This test will not show any problems because their hardware diagnostic software can't drive the card hard enough to have rendering problems, not along even detect those rendering problems. Then I have to convince this tech that there actually is a problem and then convince them to send me yet another card. . . . it's like banging your head against a brick wall and wondering why you have a headache. . . and if by some miracle I do get them to ship me another card. . . then I have to pray it doesn't fry again in 6 months.

It's not minor not even in the very least little bit.

So yes Gen 1 Mac Pro buyers did get the shaft. . . and just when we think we have some light at the end of the tunnel and get an option for a truely better card. . .we get the shaft again. . .

So yes we are angry and justifiably so. . . . Especially after paying a premium for a supposed superior system. . . .

If it turns out over the next few weeks that apple have left us in the lurch on this, I think I'm going to demand a full refund on my Mac Pro based on being miss-sold it. Apple would obviously refuse and then I think I would go to the Treading Standards for advice.

If things progressed, I think it would be clear cut once all the facts are pulled together in which case Apple would have to either make better cards compatible or refund every current MP user - I wonder what they would do then.

I hope I'm getting this way out of proportion and it turns out that the card is, or will be, compatable, but it's helping me get my head together thinking about the options. I'm not normally an over the top person so excuse me for the rage.

Any other suggestions would be welcome regarding the way forward.

Well said. I too will be approaching trading standards, probably before I approach Apple to be honest.

Based on what? No where that I ever saw in the product or advertising literature for the previous generation Mac Pro did Apple claim that you would be able to update to an 8800GT at a later date. You may have assumed this: that was your assumption, therefore your issue. You will get nowhere with this.

Sorry, just not true. I actually NEED the GPU improvement as my digital photography workflow progresses with larger and larger file sizes. I'm not lying, I'm dead serious. I'm not as emotionally attached to my mac as many I guess, as I'm only a Mac user for a bit less than a year. It won't be that hard to go back, but I will be disappointed (and wife will be angry after all the money spent on hardware and software...)

You can be missold something by a salesperson instore you know. Just as valid to Trading Standards as any advertising.

Which is precisely the conversation I had with the salesperson in the Applestore. As my photos got larger and larger I'd need a better gfx card to work, don't worry, he said, you'll be able to upgrade.

I hope you got that in writing! And which card do you have now? If it's not the Quadra card that was offered with the original Mac Pros then you can still upgrade so he wasn't lying, even if none of the new cards work.

Dont feed the troll.

Sean, seriously. Mac Pro's arent cheap. People have pored a lot of money into these machines with the view that it would be upgradeable. Its understandable that people are angry that they've spent a lot of money on a machine that cant even handle as trivial an upgrade as a graphics card.

It would be understandable if the cards were slot incompatible. But right now you can go out and buy an equivalent card for a PC and it will work in a Mac Pro, but you just wont be able to boot into OS-X because of firmware issues.

So really its the firmware of the card that is the issue, and it seems inconceivable that Apple are not willing to put in the time and effort to make this card backwards compatible.

If you dont have anything constructive to say in this thread, please go elsewhere.

Until someone tries it everyone should shut the heck up. There is no sense in arguing about that isn't really confirmed.

Plus, who is to say Apple doesn't have plans to release an version compatible with the old Pros, assuming the new one is indeed incompatible.

Just calm down.

Oh man you really don't know much about all this do you?

You don't need ANYTHING in writing to be able to file a complaint and have Trading Standards not only investigate it but also to prosecute on your behalf, though I have to say they're most useful in simply acting as intermediaries in getting your issue solved. If you were sold something by a salesman, and the salesman told you it would accept future upgrades which it then doesn't then the item has been missold. Simple as that.

Got a phone call

Hello guys,
I just want to confirm that I got that unpleasant call from Apple, too. Actually guy left a message since I wasn't at home.

I know all about using Trading Standards to settle disputes: I have used them more than once in the past. I would suggest ensuring you know exactly what the salesperson said to you. The first time you said that he said " he said, you'll be able to upgrade." and now you say he said " it would accept future upgrades". These are very, very different statements. One can clearly be taken to imply the upgrades available AT THAT TIME, the other clearly implies upgrades to BE RELEASED LATER. As you keep changing your story I am afraid that I am inclined to believe you are simply making up what you were told to suit you as you go along.

STOP TALKING SENSE!!! ITS NOT APPRECIATED IN THIS THREAD ;):D

(I agree with you - people are arguing here over nothing at the moment. They all need to find a bridge and 'get over it')

I specifically discussed the card options with the guy in the shop and came to the conclusion that I didn't want to 'upgrade' at the time to the ATI card but wait until something better came out - as he assured me it would and it would be compatable.

If it came to it I'm sure with the help of furums such as this I could pull together a number of people with similar experiences.

OK, I know in practice it would be hard to put a real case together but my gut feeling is that the facts are there and at the end of the day all I want is for Apple to play the game (excuse the pun) properly. ahhhhhhhhhh

I was in the store for over an hour talking to this guy. I'm not going to verbatim repeat what was said here for brevitys sake. Rather than "changing my story" and "simply making up what I was told" I was summing up the gist of the conversation. Ever heard of someone doing that?

[EDIT] OK this is getting ridiculous. My argument isn't with you. I apologise if it sounded like I was annoyed at you. I'm just frustrated at being told one thing and then something different (possibly) happening. /me promises to calm down and discuss this rationally[/EDIT]

You gonna serenade him and make him breakfast? I think you meant FLOUR and eggs. I think you need to just calm down. It's a fracking computer dude...chill.

Spelling was never my strong point. You are right, I need to chill and get away from this computer. I've got a VAT return to do so it's a lot easier to get wound up by somthing than to do the VAT!!

I don't get it. I mean right now my mac pro i got in 2006 is still holding its own against any other pc except for the video card. I was planing on getting some clovertown cpus and going 2x quad core but now i don't see a point. At this point the computer won't last me 5 years like my g4 did, like i planned on having it last.

My point is that the gist of your 2 posts are logically very different. I am simply trying to point out that if you are talking about exploring the various legal frameworks in the UK (which I consider Trading Standards to be part of, you may not) then precision is important. I don't think that us continuing this disagreement/argument here is doing anyone any good so I will not be replying to further posts on the subject.

That said I am interested in how this goes if you do take it to Trading Standards or further: please post the results of that...
