This means if a card for the 2008 MP's was not to work in the older MP's it would almost have to be intentional for them not to work. That is why so many people are upset.

This is exactly why I am upset and I dont understand why some are taking this so lightly.

Here is what I wrote on my iPetition post

I do not expect a plethora of video cards to be available for my Mac Pro however I find it highly unreasonable that Apple cannot provide an updated card for a machine that I bought only 1 year ago (bought 12/1/2007). With the thousands of dollars that I have invested into this machine from hard drives to ram it is an insult to me as a consumer and supporter of apple hardware and software to not provide me with reasonable upgrades that allow this machine to keep up with the increasing demands of software applications and utilize the full potential of my machine. That being said the 8800gt definitley appears to be inside the realm of possiblity of a card that could work on older mac pro's and not giving and upgrade to those who invested in the earlier machines is a slap in the face and makes it discouraging to want to buy future releases of the Mac Pro. For a company that prides itself as being on the cutting edge and providing quality products it is sad to see Apple turn their back on those that have invested into their quality products that would like to keep them on par with new cutting edge technology.

I encourage everyone to do the same! Here is a link to do so . . .

One's are taking it lighty are either tired of being screwed, not in the market to upgrade or already has the latest and greatest. Some people aren't outspoken either. My input is get everybody you can think of to sign the petition. I think what Apple is doing is a form of monopoly. I'm as upset as the next person.

On the contrary, if I didn't think there actually was a fix in the works, I would be upset as well. As to wether it was intentional, I don't believe it was, or they wouldn't be fixing it. I also don't believe a few people complaining is the cause of the fix either. In a company Apple's size, there would be a constant background drone of complaints anyway.

I would suggest signing the petition, but I expect a fix and I expect it in a month or so. Perhaps it would be best to have a bit of patience, and get angry if it doesn't show up then. A pain in the a** to wait two months or so? Yes. Such is life.

I believe somewhere else that it was said that, that only works in hackentosh's.

I don't remember where, it might even have been here a few weeks ago, but I distinctly remember someone saying that 10.5.2 beta builds had rudimentary but unfinished drivers specifically for ATI 3800 series cards already in place. If that was the case, perhaps Apple is going to surprise us with an actual choice of high end cards for a change. We can but hope....

Cheers!

OH my FRIGGIN GOD
no one has posted their efi 32 to make my PC ver. of the 8800 GT work so I Can boot mac OSX finally and still
Apple has not made an 8800 GT for older mac pros?

Its been a while now since this thread started, seems like forever not seeing my osx!

Kuraudo: Flashing a 8800GT PC edition with the Mac 8800 will still not work in the old mac pros since it is the firmware that is not compatible.

When I bought my mac pro, I was told it would be upgradable. I feel I was lied to a year ago, and that is just wrong.

It is upgradable, just buy a new $4000 Mac Pro "upgrade" and use your existing power cord and keyboard. See, Steve never lies...

What? We have been waiting for nothing? Oh god, I bought this card for nothing too. At least I got to play a few games =/

So that new version of the 8800 GT is still not here yet huh?
I wonder if it will ever come. Nvidia's word is pretty good, I suppose I just hope its not going to be forever.

Well, technically it IS upgradeable. You can add more and bigger hard drives, a sh*tload of memory and faster (if you have a slower model) processors. Hopefully, we'll get at least one newer graphics card option, too. So perhaps you weren't lied to when you bought it.

Cheers!

I'm starting to think you really are on Apple's payroll! Let's hope we do get that graphics card!!

Thats like saying my TI-99 was upgradable because I could buy a tape recorder to store data.

Also, people having issues on Macfixit. Looks like we're in for a round of beta testing once we get these cards.

from that article:

LEGACY 8800?
As you probably know by now, a collective groan was uttered by many of the 2006/2007 Mac Pro owners when they learned that the GeForce 8800 GT kit for the 2008 Mac Pro was NOT compatible with the older Mac Pros. We even started a petition as a vehicle of protest. GOOD NEWS: Our sources confirm that Apple is working on a second version of the GeForce 8800 GT that *IS* compatible with the 2006/2007 Mac Pro. We will post the model or part number once it's available.

Why does apple's website state the ATI Radeon 2600 XT requires PCIe 2.0 but still works in older mac pros, while the 8800 has the same 'requirement' but does not work?
