... and there was much rejoicing in the streets!
For he that is called Jobs had workedth it and it came to pass. :D:apple:

YAYYYYYYYYYY! Just ordered mine over the phone. It might be here tomorrow. Sweet. High 5 to all who hung in there and who supported us.

For sure! I was really starting to wonder if Apple would do the right thing or the profitable thing. They took a while (and hopefully it was only due to re-writing drivers and 32-bit EFI), but they finally came through. For most users, this update has extended the life of the 1st Gen Mac Pros by a few years.

Those people with a 'foul mouth' are probably the ones that got Steve off his can and do something about it.

Next rant should be a processor upgrade.

I finally got to send Steve a friendly thank you email today! It was nice to see that the price in the education store is only $251. Having to wait a few more months saved us $100. His last email to me said it would take them about a month. It has only been 11 days!

I just hope we don't start getting phone calls tomorrow from the Apple Store, asking us what Mac Pro we are planning on using the card in.

I can't believe I finally get to stop emailing and nagging people about this.

Just ordered mine and they sent the wrong 8800 card. Part No. MB137Z/A is for Early 2008 MP and Part No. MB560Z/A is for the First Generation. They sent me 137Z, Apple will send me 560Z and the UPS return labels to return 137Z. Just letting you all know.

Australian store doesnt show it yet, but do show a price reduction on 2008 8800's and 2600's...
Does the US store ship internationally and will it affect warranty? Or should i call the AUS apple store and quote the part number?

Cheers,

Great Price too, for something selling from Apple. I expected a premium $349 like the 1900. Super pumped. can't wait for some dough now.

All's well that ends well, right?

I assume that Apple will have learned their lesson on this, and the next-gen video cards for the Mac will work with all Mac Pros...

The pricing is also significantly better...hopefully it's the start of a trend.

Nice!!! I'm so glad I kept my 8 core mac pro now!! I'm very hopeful that I can upgrade to the next gpu on my mac pro into the future!!! :D:D:D

This is great news. Let's hope down the road the 1st gen gets another option as well. This really helps longevity of a Mac Pro purchase to many users.

Well you can thank me for my rotten luck and lack of patience! I just purchased a BFG 8800GTS 512 OC and installed it to see if it works in my 2007 Mac Pro in Windows NT64. That pretty much guaranteed the new card would come out! The BFG 8800GTS 512 OC works great, but only in Windows. I didn't have to do anything but remove the ATI drivers and install the drivers for the 8800GTS and it worked.

So now what? Return the 8800GTS (which runs Crysis on High at 1920x1200 with no problem) and get the slightly slower 8800GT for Mac compatibility? Or get a single slot card to run next to the 8800GTS for OSX?

The 8800's in order of speed - 8800 Ultra > 8800 GTS 512 > 8800 GTX > 8800 GT > 8800 GTS 640 > 8800 GTS 320

Anyway, this is really good news. I hope Apple keeps the upgrade paths open in the future!

I would get the Apple 8800GT. Of course, if you want to have your cake and eat it too, swap out the ROM chip on the GTS for a bigger pin-compatible model, then flash the 8800GT ROM/EFI in there to get a Mac-compatible 8800GTS. Quite a bit of work, but it can be done I think.

What about the ATI 1900 frame!?

Perfect, I already offer my current graphics card, the ATI X1900 XT on ebay!

But while I shot the pictures for ebay I saw that the ATI X1900 is mounted on a red frame. Do I have to keep this frame in order to use it with the new 8800 or can I sell it together with the X1900 on ebay?

Regarding the power-cable, I think I can sell this together the card, am I correct?

Thank you in advance!

I don't think you will need the frame for the Apple 8800GT, but I would hang on to it and the power cable.
