I really want to do the upgrade but, my mac is the 2.16, I know i will be able to run the OS but i already went throw tiger and now leopard obviously i am going to feel something migrating to snow leopard in my mac but will it be a significant slow down or something i can handle or maybe it will be faster cause in the keynote I heard that it was just a faster and better leopard I am looking to upgrade but my laptop but still plenty of months from now (hell, I might even wait for the next Generation)

Max out your ram in one go, Check with the Apple site what the max is, i THINK it is 2x2GB sticks, so grab it from www.macsales.com and install it.

Going to 2Gb with two 1GB sticks then later going to 4GB would suck, so it is worth doing it right the first time around.

I was under the impression that the maximum RAM I could install was 3GB (a 2GB and a 1GB), but is it really 4GB (2GBx2)?

Also, is Apple's own brand RAM the best to use?

Thanks

Yes.

And no, Apple overcharges for that.

Look at OWC or Newegg.

thanks Krafty. but disregarding the overcharge, is it not better to use the Apple brand?

Also, I found this at apple.com:-
Although these iMacs will accept up to a 2 GB SO-DIMM in each of the two memory slots, the iMac will only support 3 GB total memory. If you want to maximize the amount of SDRAM in your computer, install a 2 GB SO-DIMM in one slot and a 1GB SO-DIMM in the other.

Note: If you do install a 2 GB SO-DIMM in both the bottom and top memory slots of the computer, the About This Mac window and Apple System Profiler will both show that you have 4 GB of SDRAM installed. However, Activity Monitor and other similar applications will reveal that only 3 GB of SDRAM has been addressed for use by the computer.

why will only 3gb be ever used?

thanks

It has something to do with the OS but SL is suppose to support up to 16TB of RAM in that case. If you want to stick with 3GB, then thats your choice, but I wouldnt recommend a 1GB+2GB stick.

And no, Apple brand RAM is the same as pretty much any other brand.

so there is no harm in putting in 4GB:)

thanks Krafty.
