A former UPS worker located in Winnipeg, Canada has been accused of stealing Apple products valued at more than $1.3 million, and reselling them for profit.

According to Canada's Global News and the Winnipeg Free Press, UPS worker Orville Beltrano stole approximately 866 Apple devices from the warehouse where he had worked since 2013. Beltrano served as a supervisor at the location, and he was selling the products that he swiped on Kijiji.

Between September 2023 and January 2024, Beltrano deposited more than $232,000 in his bank accounts. He was fired by UPS on January 22, and arrested the same day. In his home and vehicle, investigators found $9,000 in cash, a Mac laptop, and jewelry valued at over $9,000.

Beltrano admitted to stealing Apple products and jewelry from UPS, and said that he used the money to purchase a home worth $680,000 and to pay off a $60,000 Audi hatchback purchased in 2021. He has been charged with theft over $5,000, theft under $5,000, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, and possession of the proceeds of crime.

The theft was discovered after UPS launched an investigation in December to determine why so many Apple devices were disappearing from the warehouse in Winnipeg. Surveillance cameras were installed, and Beltrano was found to be stealing products from pallets that were supposed to be shipped to Ontario. He allegedly stole more 120 iPhones in a single shift in January 2024.

Prosecutors have asked the court to approve the seizure of Beltrano's house, cash, bank accounts, and vehicle.

Unless it’s waved in their employment contract, workers have right to privacy in Canada. They may have security cameras outside but not inside.

Why? What kind of privacy are you entitled when you working at a open area? We are talking about a facility that handles shipping where lots of ppl are working? You shouldn't be expecting privacy when you are working at open area.

This is a huge problem in the States as well. FedEx and UPS routinely steal Apple products.

DHL too.

I’ve had 3 items over the last 6 months - one shipped by each of these 3 carriers - make it from anywhere in the world to the local distribution point, at which point the tracking ends (never updates to “out for delivery”) and I never receive the shipment. Carrier “investigations” never find the items either.

I am thankful for dumb thieves.

These loses impacts all of us when companies increases fees and prices to cover past loses.

Similar thinking was applied with LCD, LED & OLED displays... 1st few generations were that expensive due to reject rate but once reject rate drops to approaching zero then 32" 4K TVs become ~$100 rather than ~$10,000.

If >80% of Apple devices were stolen then I wouldnt be surprised if prices increases by ~10x.

Imagine thinking you can get away with this sort of larceny with today's surveillance technology. Although I'll admit it does cross my mind every time I receive an Apple product via UPS/FedEx/etc., that the typical courier probably delivers an insane amount of merch, in sheer dollar amounts, on any given day—particularly whenever a particular Apple product gets refreshed.

Cameras need to be clearly visible, not hidden and undisclosed.

Can’t Apple see devices that have been stolen and brick them?

Not sure what point you're making? Of course they can, but how do they know devices are stolen? How much time between when a report is made and when a device is activated by an innocent buyer?

My UPS story…

I had a UPS delivery person would solicit for tips gently reminding me that “if it wasn’t good enough, my package might be accidentally damaged or lost.” Called the UPS supervisor to complain and his response was “Our drivers would never solicit for tips, but they really work hard and deserve to be tipped.”

long story, but the gist is back in 2005 I had a UPS driver try to steal a 30" Cinema display from me. He left numerous slips on my door claiming I wasn't home while I was home specifically waiting on this delivery. After the last slip was left on my garage door so he wouldn't have to walk up to my open front door, I knew something was off. I stopped by the UPS office and asked to pick up my package and talked to a manager. Mysteriously, it was stashed behind the counter and another guy sheepishly brought it out to me while asking me if it took a special video card. - It was in a brown shipping box with no real indication that it was a monitor. The best part of the story was this was a replacement for slightly defective second display, and I was supposed to get a return box and shipping label for it. When I called Apple about it, they assured me they already received it. My guess is they forged a pickup scan by scanning the label in their system so the missing return wouldn't be noticed, and Apple's return center just handled it as a lost package instead of a failed return. The Apple rep argued with me that all was good, and I didn't need to do anything else. I got it fixed for a few bucks and enjoyed 3 30" cinema displays for many years thanks to UPS.

In 2022 I ordered a 24in iMac. Tracking was through FedEx and was to be delivered 12 days later. Shipped from China where it was made, I got a notification it was delivered to my home 2 weeks later.

However I was outside all morning washing my car and no FedEx truck ever came. The next day I knew something was wrong so I contacted Apple. They started a tracking investigation which should take 48 hours.

4 days later I contacted them again and was told it was still being looked into. A week later same BS. So late that night I penned an email to Tim Cook explaining the situation.

A day later someone from his executive team contacted me. Gave me option to get money back or re-order. I chose the latter and 2 weeks later a new iMac was hand delivered. Never knew the outcome of the lost iMac.
