My UPS story…

I had a UPS delivery person would solicit for tips gently reminding me that “if it wasn’t good enough, my package might be accidentally damaged or lost.” Called the UPS supervisor to complain and his response was “Our drivers would never solicit for tips, but they really work hard and deserve to be tipped.”
"What do you get if you multiply six by nine?"

To be fair, it doesn't ask how much six multiplied by nine is, It asks "What do YOU get if YOU multiply six by nine?"
It's actually a very personal question, and unique to the individual.

According to Canada's Global News and the Winnipeg Free Press, UPS worker Orville Beltrano stole approximately 866 Apple devices from the warehouse where he had worked since 2013.
Needs a bit of a rewrite. Makes it sound like he'd been stealing since he started working there in 2013. But in fact, according to one of the cited articles, the thefts started last July:

"Between last July and this January, police allege Beltrano stole at least 866 Apple products."

I think this is a drop in the ocean and happens very often.

I once returned a HomePod mini through a UPS depot. A few weeks later, Apple still hadn’t received it.
When I explained that I had dropped it off, Apple launched an investigation.
They absolved me of any wrongdoing and considered the matter closed.

My suspicion is that UPS store was purposely stealing items they knew were going back to Apple.
I’ve never again used that same store.

A former UPS worker located in Winnipeg, Canada has been accused of stealing Apple products valued at more than $1.3 million, and reselling them for profit.

According to Canada's Global News and the Winnipeg Free Press, UPS worker Orville Beltrano stole approximately 866 Apple devices from the warehouse where he had worked since 2013. Beltrano served as a supervisor at the location, and he was selling the products that he swiped on Kijiji.

Between September 2023 and January 2024, Beltrano deposited more than $232,000 in his bank accounts. He was fired by UPS on January 22, and arrested the same day. In his home and vehicle, investigators found $9,000 in cash, a Mac laptop, and jewelry valued at over $9,000.

Beltrano admitted to stealing Apple products and jewelry from UPS, and said that he used the money to purchase a home worth $680,000 and to pay off a $60,000 Audi hatchback purchased in 2021. He has been charged with theft over $5,000, theft under $5,000, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, and possession of the proceeds of crime.

The theft was discovered after UPS launched an investigation in December to determine why so many Apple devices were disappearing from the warehouse in Winnipeg. Surveillance cameras were installed, and Beltrano was found to be stealing products from pallets that were supposed to be shipped to Ontario. He allegedly stole more 120 iPhones in a single shift in January 2024.

Prosecutors have asked the court to approve the seizure of Beltrano's house, cash, bank accounts, and vehicle.

well delivery drivers are not hired for their intelligence

I was kind of hoping they'd make him play in a prison hockey league, against the guards. Then Hollywood would make a movie about it complete with a Burt Reynolds cameo, and the Warden's speech: "Now, there are two things we take very seriously here in the province of Saskatchewan... Prison and hockey. We play a little of the latter here."

…province of Manitoba 😀

That is nuts how much he got away with, and just kept going with the thefts. Thieves don’t know when to quit while they are ahead, but keep pushing their blind luck. It’s mind-boggling.

The MacRumors headline is misleading; it should specify that the total value of the stolen goods is in Canadian dollars, as anyone who reads the headline but none of the story can reasonably assume that the amount given is in United States dollars. And if whoever came up with the headline thought it was safe to say that CAN$1.3 million is worth more than US$1 million, they were wrong:

Unless it’s waved in their employment contract, workers have right to privacy in Canada. They may have security cameras outside but not inside.
Why? What kind of privacy are you entitled when you working at a open area? We are talking about a facility that handles shipping where lots of ppl are working? You shouldn't be expecting privacy when you are working at open area.
Interesting but that doesn’t fly in the U.S. Everything from plexiglass windows on employee lockers to… Well...

I have no doubt retailers would also have them in restrooms for theft prevention/protection if they could get away with it.

120 phones in one shift? Goodness this guy was just begging to get caught wasn't he.

Also I can't even fathom how people have the cojones to do things like this... I wouldn't be able to sleep at night or do anything because I'd be scared that the police are going to grab me or knock down my door any minute.

I work in the department that orders phones for our employees and this happens with extreme frequency here, always UPS, and it's worse around the holidays (when presumably there are a lot of temp workers employed who don't care about being fired for theft). We get the parcel, but it's just an empty box. Never any problems with USPS, though. It's especially problematic when it's a Verizon iPhone, as they make you jump through hurdles to get it rectified, as I understand it.

I had a Mac mini disappear from the local UPS station in January 2023. Never scanned again after getting to the town about 30 miles over.

Poor guy. Dude has had to live in Winnipeg, and came to this to finally get out to a nicer part of Canada, a prison.

Love the irony of the insinuation of too much privacy into a place where so many stand on their soapbox about not enough privacy.

long story, but the gist is back in 2005 I had a UPS driver try to steal a 30" Cinema display from me. He left numerous slips on my door claiming I wasn't home while I was home specifically waiting on this delivery. After the last slip was left on my garage door so he wouldn't have to walk up to my open front door, I knew something was off. I stopped by the UPS office and asked to pick up my package and talked to a manager. Mysteriously, it was stashed behind the counter and another guy sheepishly brought it out to me while asking me if it took a special video card. - It was in a brown shipping box with no real indication that it was a monitor. The best part of the story was this was a replacement for slightly defective second display, and I was supposed to get a return box and shipping label for it. When I called Apple about it, they assured me they already received it. My guess is they forged a pickup scan by scanning the label in their system so the missing return wouldn't be noticed, and Apple's return center just handled it as a lost package instead of a failed return. The Apple rep argued with me that all was good, and I didn't need to do anything else. I got it fixed for a few bucks and enjoyed 3 30" cinema displays for many years thanks to UPS.
Had a very similar thing happen with a pair or AirPod Max. Have two pair now as a result (and after doing everything in my power to correct).
