the card has arrived, pretty fast from HK, 8 days :D

no drive need as mention, just insert it to the Expresscard slot , work ! running 10.9.5 now and nice speed, faster than Usb 2.0 port a lot when transferring 5gb file
going to install El Capitan PB3 and see how it goes , very happy now :p

Hi. Cool to see an embedded expresscard working natively in OSX. I just wanted to ask if you could also boot from it? I mean do the devices connected show up in the boot menu when you start up the computer ?

Thanks.

Apple Target disk mode only support FW/eSATA as i know (correct me if i am wrong) , never support USB , i am not sure the native Usb 3.0 at new mac support or not .

and i just tried it, as expected , cannot boot from USB 3.0 , thanks

I have been doing my research and have confirmed from Apple support that the new 17" i7 MBP does indeed include a Expresscard 2.0 slot in it. This will support the throughput necessary for a USB 3.0 Expresscard however, the one thing I have not been able to confirm is if Mac OSX will actually recognize the card and will I be able to use it to take advantage of an external hard drive?

Has anyone tried yet that can either confirm if it works or not?
If not it looks like im going eSata :(

1 - You go to the site http://www.tonymacx86.com/ (The site is also a great reference)

2 - You make an account (Essential but not particularly problematic)

3 - You then go to the downloads, to downloads index

4 - Find the appropriate Multibeast for your operating system

5 - Download the Multibeast that best fits your system in my case -
MultiBeast Snow Leopard 3.10.1

6 - it is a small file - 22 mb total (in ZIP format)

7 - Unzip and open the installer Multibeast 3.10.1.pkg

8 - Click continue and agree to the licensing (Free)

9 - Go down the install options to:
- Drivers and Bootloaders
- Kexts and Enablers
- Miscellaneous
- USB 3.0 - NEC/Renesas

10 - Install that driver and restart your machine…you are now good to go.

Let us know how it works out and if you need to load third party drivers etc.

You're in for a 2 to 3 week wait for shipping from Hong Kong.
I ordered the same card. I am in the UK & was amazed at how fast the delivery was from Hong Kong. I ordered on the 8th it was dispatched on the 9th & arrived on 11th.

Works as advertised in my MacBook Pro 4,1 2008 pre-Unibody model running Yosemite. No drivers to load. Toshiba 5TB USB3 external disk has great performance on Black Magic benchmark - about 120MBps read & write.

Really cheap - $34.98 with free delivery (£23.63). Recommended.

Paid $32 and received it in 8 days.

While waiting for it to arrive I upgraded to El Capitan and the new card works perfectly.

I had one panic and failed start when I booted up with a USB HDD plugged in - it's quite a power hungry drive, so that's what most likely caused the panic.

El Capitan is work as expected :D , totally plug & play , happy happy happy :)

Hey I'm considering picking up the same express-card to use with USB3 external hdd. My question is, can you use two USB3 devices simultaously at the same time without external power?

2 USB thumb drive are ok to work simultaneously , but portable drive need external power for sure .

I just tried that with two WD "My Passport" USB3 portable drives, .... plugged one in and it showed in finder, then plugged in the second and showed no drive in finder, until I removed one of the two.

Tried one WD "My Passport" USB3 portable drive and one thumb drive and no problem.

I get panics if I attempt to boot with a drive connected to the card, so just avoid that.
