Update:

I bought the GMYLE® ExpressCard 34mm to USB 3.0 Adapter (Dual Port) from Amazon for $8.99 plus $4.99 shipping.

Installed MultiBeast for Yosemite, plugged in the card and connected a USB3 portable HDD and it worked right away.

I copied a test file to the same drive using the original USB ports and it took 7 mins, then the same file using the USB3 port and it 2mins.

Very happy with the upgrade, and that I am using the express card slot for the first time.

I just bought the same card in hope of repeating your success, but so far I haven't got it to work - In Multibeast, I have installed only 'USB 3.0 Universal' under Drivers>Misc - Is that correct?

MBP 17" early 2011
10.10.1

Many thanks!

That sounds like what I did on my late 2011 and my wife's 2010 17" MBP and each worked first time.

The 2010 has an earlier Yosemite version, and mine 10.10.3

Make sure that you use the correct MultiBeast version.

I failed again... tried install Multibeast 7.2 USB 3.0 Universal.

Restarted with the card plugged in.

Can't detect the card in System Report...

My macbook model is 17" 2.2Ghz i7 (Early 2011)

I'm not sure what's changed, but it's working for me now - thanks very much. Perhaps the card ejected/disconnected too regularly to properly test it. I have stuck a couple of strips of good quality clear tape to both sides of the card to hold it in place and it works a treat. 90mb/s from a Lacie Rugged vs. 24mb/s over USB 2. It provides power to the external drive too!

Good to hear that yours is working now.

I will also add some clear tape to prevent it from being pulled out when you remove a USB plug.

I'm looking for a way to re-activate/power up the card without having to power down and up my MBP.

Correct, .....I guess this will be a non-issue once I ensure the card doesn't inadvertently come out.

When I insert my CF card reader (which, as a photographer, is my main use of the expresscard) I notice that I usually have to insert the reader a couple of times before it receives power and connects, as if the expresscard needs to be 'woken up' to send out power. Is this your experience too?

I am so pleased with this setup as I notice the the speed difference vs. USB2 on a daily basis - wish I had done this years ago (so thanks again)!

If my card inadvertantly ejects, which happens fairly easy when unlugging a USB device, the only way that I can get it to power up again is by restarting my MBP.

I tried some clear tape to prevent it from ejecting, but the tape wont stick to the MBP surface.

I'm going to open the back cover and see if I can find a better way to secure the card - I have no need to take it in and out, this is the first time I've used the Express card slot, so no harm in locking it into its current use.

I used a very high quality clear 3M tape which sticks fine, but as you say, there may well be a way to lock the card in place internally - let us know how you get on.

I took off the back and used the heat gun to apply some hot glue.

I put the glue gun nozzle up against one of the holes in the perforated plate and it went between the card and the plate, which means I'd need to do some disassembly if I decided to remove the card, which is fine with me seeing as I have no other use for the ExpressCard slot.

If you want to make it less permanent just let a few drops of the hot glue drip onto the perforated plate.

Update:

Last night I installed El Capitan, and this card no longer works.

I'll be waiting for the next Multibeast update, unless someone knows of another workaround.

Ron1004,

Are you having an early 2011 MBP 17" too ???

Could you provide me the tricks to get this card working in yosemite 10.10.4 ?

Yeah sure will do :)

But Native supported by OSX means no 3rd party driver need, that's why I choose it :D

Let us know how it works out and if you need to load third party drivers etc.

You're in for a 2 to 3 week wait for shipping from Hong Kong.
the card has arrived, pretty fast from HK, 8 days :D

no drive need as mention, just insert it to the Expresscard slot , work ! running 10.9.5 now and nice speed, faster than Usb 2.0 port a lot when transferring 5gb file
going to install El Capitan PB3 and see how it goes , very happy now :p

Thanks for reporting back, and good to hear that it's working without the need for third party drivers.

I have also recently had a few things ship from China in just 8 to 10 days, ....... whereas a year ago it took 4 to 6 weeks.

Let us know how it goes with El Capitan.
