Is anyone who needs to connect to both HMDI and VGA getting the HDMI version and getting a separate HDMI to VGA 3rd party adapter?

I would very much want to know too...
I suspect a good quality adapter like kanex hdmi to vga will work, but A clarification would help a lot!

So I tried this one http://www.amazon.com/Female-Adapte...8&qid=1430378964&sr=1-11&keywords=hdmi+to+vga and it didn't work at all. It might need one of the ones that use USB power to power the internal converter. I might just wait till I can get a VGA version of the Apple one. Sucks that we have to spend so much for these fat adapters.

I haven't tried any of them, but out of the gate there's a problem with that solution. HDMI is video and audio. VGA is video only. So once you plug something into the HDMI port the Mac should want to set HDMI as the sound output. Which if you've plugged in a VGA adapter means you have no sound until you manually change the sound output back to the laptop speakers or a headphone output.

3rd party adapters can be pretty sketchy. So then if you pony up for a good quality one, you're within a few bucks of the Apple adapter, which will work seamlessly.

I'd love to know if anyone gets a good 3rd party solution going for this. But for my money, to avoid the hassle, I'm likely going to wait for the VGA adapter. My local Apple Store claims they had 1 or 2 come in which sold immediately.

Can you leave it connected in 24/7 or do you have to remove it from the laptop when not in use? I ask this because this way there is a permanent solution (permanent ports) for keeping the MacBook charged and having the iPhone plugged in for charging simultaneously.

If you keep it plugged in without the power cable attached to it, the AV adapter will drain your laptop's battery faster. Otherwise, sure, you can leave it connected.

im in no rush to get one, but I'm wondering if I'm better off getting an official one or if 3rd party ones will be significantly cheaper for same thing.

i also have a thunderbolt dock i now have to offload since rMB is my only computer.

So far the only adapters I've found with the pass-through for charging are the Apple adapters. The VGA adapter is pretty big, but I've been using it for those times when I need to connect something.

I'm so annoyed at Apple.... I live in San Francisco and have gone into 7 local stores and none of them have them in stock, they all say they have never had any in stock, and they say anyone claiming to have bought one in a store is lying, even though I showed them several receipts users have posted.

Meanwhile, mine has been on order since launch day, and it says "delivers April 28 (now passed) to May 11" ... what a horrible horrible launch experience.

So I've now had my paperweight Macbook for 2.5 weeks unable to really use it without jumping through hoops, and supposedly some stores have the adaptor yet none of my local stores have ever, and claim no one can get in stores.

This launch has sure been an embarrassment for Apple.

I understand your frustration, but I would hesitate to call the MacBook a paperweight without the dongle. I've been using my MacBook for a week and I've used the dongle once, and that was to charge my iPhone. Lol.

I know you're out of luck in SF, but I'm in San Diego and I had ordered my AV adapter on launch day and it was STILL pending as of today. I called every day this week the number for the store in San Diego, Fashion Valley Mall and asked if they had adapters. They said no, I have to order online. Today, on a whim, I decided to go there after work and they had 2 adapters in the store. I bought them both and cancelled my order online which was still pending. Apple really botched this release, IMO.

Yeah, the issue is in many countries I travel (I travel overseas through Asia, Middle East, and Europe), a plug adaptor is required, and with that dongle I can use one plug into the wall then charge my phone\iPad off my laptop. Without it, I have to go out and buy an extra adaptor for the wall, which in some hotels it's not even possible to use two. And then additionally I have to carry a second iPad charger brick, second USB cable, etc.... it's just a royal pain, not the pleasant customer experience Apple preaches.

Either way, this rollout is unacceptable. There's something going on. Can you imagine a lightning cable shortage when Apple launches an iPhone? The media would be in a frenzy.

Agreed. The problem is it seems inventory is so constrained that it's a crapshoot if stores have them or not, and it seems like it's not even something that's drawn into the planogram for the stores, so many stores who have them don't even have them on display, which issues compound based on the fact employees don't really know anything about the USB-C because they haven't been trained since it's not an in-store product. Ugh, frustrating. All I can say is I better have my adaptor by Thursday. It was "Delivers April 28 (passed) through May 11" ... and I'll be real pissed if they don't get it out soon.

The dongle shortage is perplexing.

I can understand the MacBook supplies being constrained. It's frustrating, but one could make a case that it's cutting edge technology and getting adequate yields for cutting edge technology can be a challenge.

But a dongle? Apple's been making dongles for decades. Other companies churn them out by the millions. There's really no excuse for not having the dongles available by now.

I have to point out, at my local Apple Store the USB-C AV dongles are on display, on the accessories rack with all the other dongles. If you really need one, I can send it to you, but my shipping will be more than Apple, especially if you aren't in Canada... ;-)

Went into my local store yesterday and didn't see any so I asked and they had plenty on hand. Walked out in 5 minutes with one. As others have said, they are not on the shelves since they don't have MacBooks to sell.

Weird, going to try another Apple Store today... went to several yesterday here in San Francisco and NONE.

Seriously? Oakridge Mall? BS! I went in there this afternoon and they had none and they said they had none since launch.

oops, maybe I got the last one?

I got the VGA adaptor in the Lenox Mall store today. They didn't have the HDMI adapter.

Still can't find the VGA version. Saw an HDMI one in the fashion island store tonight.

they weren't on the shelf, I had to ask a genius to "run to the back"

Funny I just called that store, got the manager since it's so early. She said they have never had that part number. I should go today and ask for a tour of their stock room, hehe.

In fairness, the couple stores I've been to they've used apple.com to check their own inventory, and I've had to explain that the apple.com store inventory check is not working for this part, and they look at me like I have two heads. LOL

The statement from Apple that you referred to applies to their chargers, whereas this was about 3rd party chargers. I still am waiting to see who will try to plug in a charger from a different manufacturer that is designed for a different device, which is always a risky proposition.

It's not the charger which decides how much power to draw, it's the device. The ratings on the chargers is the max amount of power they are rated for. So a 45W charger can only provide 45W, but anything from 0-45 is decided by the device, because it's the device that provides the load.

For the MacBook, Apple's chargers are USB 3.1. The MacBook must work with any USB 3.1 charger (and vice versa). The only way you'll damage it with a third party charger is if the third party charger is faulty.

Yes, I agree. They will almost never actually go to the back. The just load up their own website to check. The whole inventory of these items is lacking and disappointing from Apple.

I will just remind people again to order online and choose ship to store. They are usually shipping within 3-4 days even thought it says 3-5 weeks online.

Your picture saved me. First was told they don't have any (lie) then the rep went to the back and came back and said he was told they don't have them yet. Then I asked if they could check with a manager the manager said they haven't had them since lunch. So I showed a copy of your receipt. They went back again and what do you know they found them. Finally got it!!! Yay
