I think we can all agree that cordless computing is the future, but for some people it's not the right choice at present.

Therefore: Apple should NEVER have included this machine in their lineup. The best way to reach the future is to embrace the past--forever! If anyone wants the future now, there should NOT be an option for them.

Apple was wrong to ditch floppy drives. They were wrong to make optical drives an external option. They were wrong when they first made USB standard while the rest of the industry was still embracing serial ports.

Now they are wrong to think people will be willing to use a laptop without a power cord attached. We MUST have a power cord, we MUST never change to a better USB port, and we MUST have multiple corded devices hanging off the smallest portable model.

Please, Apple, give us something like the old MacBook Air. Put a new processor in that, instead! The FUTURE is NEVER!

iDevices?

Why can't Apple just use this type of plug on iPhones and iPads as well? Why do we need Lightning?

It would be nice to be able to just have one type of cable around the house!

So what held them back from introducing a new Cinema Display to connect to this?

Amen! The LED Cinema Display is also nowhere to be found (used mini-display connection and USB versus a Thunderbolt connection... Perhaps they're putting a USB C connection in it and then release it in the coming months...)

In either case I'll be hanging onto my MacBook Pro with retina display and thunderbolt for some time.

Do we know whether or not the MacBook can charge from computer? I'm hoping this will have a new charger that is more like the iPad charger that we can charge from computer

I thought USB-B was the square connector seen on so many USB printers?

Yes, this is correct, B is the square looking one famous from your local printer.

Actually, Micro USB has their own A and B type connectors as well, as do the mini USB...

Apple just went full retard with the single port. Don't get me wrong, USB-C sounds cool and all but putting a just SINGLE one on the MB is just stupid given the port will be occupied 90% of the time by a power adapter.

Note: Apple's own Tech Specs page states that it's USB 3.1 Gen1, which is 5Gbps bandwidth, not USB 3.1 Gen2, which is the full 10Gbps.

Also note, Apple's adapters only support monitor mirroring up to 1080p via VGA or HDMI, plus USB and charge. One major question Ihave is, will it be possible to make a dock/dongle similar tot he ones Apple is selling, but that offer true second-display capability?

The problem with only 1 port is even if there's a charger/hub combo, you'd have to unmount and unplug a device you're currently using whenever want to plug in your computer. Would be especially annoying for a hard drive.

Considering the size of the connector, you have to wonder why they included only one...

Most interestingly I have not seen an adaptor for the Thunderbolt display.

Wonder if such a device is forthcoming.

If I understand you right, I don't believe such a thing is possible. Thunderbolt won't work with mini-display port connections.

I think that we're all happy to get USB-C as a new standard for connectivity, but most of us are quite unhappy with just one of them on a notebook.

Having to decide between power or external display is a step backwards, whatever you call it.

Interesting..

Is it me, or are they not going to support DVI-I/DVI-D?

BL.

At 2 pounds, that sucker will fly off countertops and tables before you can blink if someone trips over the cable. Adopting standards is nice for certain things; but personally, I wouldn't want to sacrifice MagSafe in order to have a new standard that's barely over six months old. To me, MagSafe is almost as "Mac" as the startup chime.

Heheh. It's silly how similar this is to when the Air was first released. And, well, pretty much every other initial release of a new Apple product over the last decade. You know, the decade wherein Apple became the largest, most profitable company in any industry on the planet...

It's an interesting concept and opens up the possibility of docking stations that support video, charging, LAN and multiple USB ports that only require a single cable to be connected to the computer. I think it may have been a better idea to put 2 of these on the computer at this stage though

I don't have a problem with USB-C from what I understand of it. But, couldn't Apple have just used 2 ports? 1 is just a bit stingy!

Very interesting approach to streamlining ports, wonder if we will see the same thing on the iPad Pro ;)

That is a very good post. I am waiting for the iPad Plus to come out and I hope it has this USB-C port for universal connections.

What I don't get is why the new MacBook only has 480p FaceTime Camera? Why did Apple do this?!

To save power and make the display even thinner. That's my guess, at least. I think it's a bad idea, too. That said, as long as they keep the Thunderbolt and USB ports on the MacBook Pro, I couldn't care less what they do with the MacBook Air/MacBook lines. I'll take more power and connectivity options over a super-thin chassis any day of the week.

Every Mac upgrade for me has come with some discomfort at first, but I've always adjusted and can see how portless will be the norm soon.

"No ports!" is the new "no optical drive!" and "no ethernet!" of 5 years ago with the MBA. Now it seems like every manufacturer is pushing their Air knockoffs...

Can't they figure out a way to daisy chain peripherals, or does usb not support this like FireWire did?

I said it once, ill say it again. Its not the port that bothers me, its the fact that the adapter doesn't come with the laptop. At $1300 to START there is no reason what-so-ever (except pure greed) that it doesn't. That thing cost $2 to make.
