It’s stopping me from considering am android device. Now of course, we don’t buy a new phone for just one feature. However, when stack ranked usb c is definitely at the top.

I still think it's crazy that you can be forced to charge your product a certain way.

If the cable makes you switch, you have chosen the wrong tool to begin with…
This “survey” is laughable…

I swear to God that the only people who cares about USB-C are people in this forum and Reddit. Actually, I’m starting to think there’s some kind of conspiracy here, maybe Apple is planting comments everywhere to make people care about stuff to sell products.

I could care less if the if the iPhone is Lighting or USB-C… all my devices except one have Lighting. What’s the big deal here? Maybe 2 times a year I have to carry 2 cables. So… what?

I see people saying they will upgrade from the iPhone 12 just to hace USB-C… really? It’s ridiculous at this point. Listen to youselves, people.

I am an IOS user. Its only to stay away from google and it's infringement on my privacy. But as far as an OS goes, Android is far superior to IOS and I am often tempted to switch to Android.

I really doubt 63% even know what USB-C is. I live in a quite tech-oriented environment, and when asking for a cable, most people still call USB-C things like “the new, bigger one you can reverse”. They’re not aware that USB-C is a thing. I bet USB-C will drive virtually no sales, just some controversy and customer complains, but overall neutral effect.
Yep I would wager that my husband has no idea that his phone uses a USB-C cable to charge. He still calls HDMI cables scart leads.

Interesting data, but it was conducted in the USA where iPhone/iMessage are dominant. In Europe and many other countries, android is dominant.

So it would be interesting to know how other android users around the world feel about the upcoming iPhone usb-c port. Like is apple about to gain market share once the usb-c port goes live?
No, prices look crazy. Apple will drop market share in Europe, it’s too easy to get a cheap Android phone that’s perfectly fast and fluid with a good camera. The iPhone will become more and more restricted, in my opinion, to those buying a luxury status symbol.

I found the media is hyping USB-C. Swapping a 10 years old connector to a 9 years old one because some (unelected) politicians want it that way. Wow.

This this makes a difference to about 10% of users. Most have no clue what Thunderbolt even is
You really think that percentage is that high? I'd be surprised if significantly more than 10% of all phone usere even know the terms lightning or usb-c. Just last week I talked with an android owning gadgethead who knew that there was something else "from apple" but didn't know the names firewire or thunderbolt (which both are from intel, not apple, right?)

In my experience, people buy android phones, because they are not in the apple ecosystem and can get a decent phone with multiple cameras, much bigger screen and significantly better battery life than the iPhone SE for less than half the price.

Real world non tech people care. My wife usually doesn’t care about new iPhone releases. But when I told her the new phone is rumored to come with usb-c, her ears perked up. Now she’s asking me when is the apple iPhone event/announcement. She’s never asked.

Android users: "Let's get iPhone so we can get USB-C Thunderbolt!"

Not once have I ever heard an Android user say they would have gotten an iPhone if it had a USB C port. If someone wanted an iPhone before, the charging cable was not going to be a reason to get an Android phone instead.
I am an android user and I also have never heard anyone say they will switch to an iPhone if it had USB-C. The survey probably actually asked, would it be easier to switch to an iPhone now that the charger is the same....

Perhaps the most surprising result of the survey was the number of Android users whose interest had been piqued by Apple's heavily rumored switch to the charging standard: 44% of existing Android owners surveyed said they would be tempted to buy an iPhone 15 if Apple adopts a USB-C port for the device.

Was this survey designed to be representative of all Android users, or just those who buy flagship devices?

I very much doubt 44% of all Android users are willing to purchase an $800 phone, regardless of whether or not it has USB-C.

I am genuinely trying to understand why does this even matters. Seriously.

What is so good about USB-C that will make you upgrade from an iPhone 11 or later to this.

But now my kids will have the old phones with lightning and if I upgrade I’ll have USB C. And then we need to carry even more chargers on vacation.
Why? All you need is one charger and two different cables - Apple's iDevice chargers have come with detachable cables, with USB-A or, now, USB-C sockets on the charger since the old 30-pin iPod days. Apple switched to USB-C sockets for their iDevice chargers several years ago so you won't need any cables that didn't come with the phones.

Of course, if you want to charge multiple devices at the same time you'll need multiple chargers (or a multi-port one) but that's not down to connectors (and now you have a wide range of multi-port USB-C chargers to choose from)

I've been using the same (usually Apple iPad/Pod) charger to charge multiple Apple and non-Apple mobile devices since the old 30 pin vs. Mini (not micro) USB days. At worst that meant carrying 2-3 cables, athough I've usually had to carry a Mac charger as well. Going forward, it should be possible to charge everything from the Mac charger.

Switch to USB Type C but remain USB 2.0 speed until someone outside forces Apple to be updated to higher speed

Don't forget that the M1 iPad Pro already has a USB-C connector that supports Thunderbolt and 6k displays - something that Lightning could not have supported.

So, even if the iPhone never gets anything better than USB 2.0 you'll still be able to charge it with the same cable as your iPad, and possibly connect it to the same displays (maybe at lower res - we'll see).

Lightning physically fewer connectors than USB-C and can't even support USB 3 without an active dongle (ISTR some iPads could do USB 3 speeds but only with the Apple camera adapter) and doesn't have enough lanes to run full-bandwidth DisplayPort - so its not a case of full TB4 or bust.

Given that the iPad has outgrown Lightning and switched to USB-C it makes perfect sense to roll out USB-C across the mobile range rather than having to create a Lightning 2.

Despite my comments about USB-C not really being of that much of a benefit, there are a few others that I hadn't thought of. As mentioned above, it will now be easier and significantly cheaper to connect it to an external display since a USB-C to HDMI cable is very cheap.

Also, if USB-C to Ethernet adapters work on the phone then it opens up more possibilities for apps like car coding and diagnostic apps. For example, most modern BMWs can have various features and retrofits coded and it's already possible to do this via specific Wifi OBD dongles. I and many other people are not too keen on using Wifi dongles for this sort of thing and would much prefer to do it via Ethernet and indeed I use a spare laptop with the software on for this purpose. An alternative is to use an Android device but with a USB-C iPhone I'd be able to do it all from the phone I already have and use daily.

It can also make some of the tools I use for my work a bit easier too such as HPE servers with iLO service port. At present I have to use an iPad or laptop to connect to the service port and use the remote console app or web browser but being able to do this from my phone would actually be very useful. There are plenty of other real use cases that would benefit me personally too.

It would also be nice to be able to plug in a USB-C to serial cable. I use a fair few bits of networking kit for work that does require serial console access. It would be nice to not have to dig out a laptop just for checking a few simple things via a CLI.

However this depends on USB-C Ethernet being a supported thing, so it probably won't be :) I'd imagine it will be though since it's already possible to do it via lightning and adapters and iPads work fine with USB-C Ethernet too. Granted these are niche use cases that won't benefit most people, but just some examples of new possibilities. Or at least cheaper/easier ways to do these things.
