I don't know how many more complaints I can handle, its getting a wee bit repetitive now. I feel its to the point where every minor glitch at least three people have is announced as a manufacturing error in which we "Have yet to hear Apple make a comment on".

I've reset the settings and still have the problem. It's only caused problems for me a few during actual calls. But it's still annoying. I hope this is addressed in the update.

In other news: users who were having problems with the proximity sensor in the past continue having proximity sensor today, despite Apple having yet to address the problem with an update.

Must be a slow news day. :)

Yup. And during the keynote Jobs kept saying "I swear, it never freezes up like this...."
The network was all messed up. Facetime works fine as long as it has an even passable amount of bandwidth. I've actually been able to get it working at places where I expected it to be completely unusable.

There's a simple reason why you see these articles, even duplicates like this one, and even on sites where you would normally expect them to cover positive things: negative news about Apple generates traffic, and thus, advertising revenue. Unfortunately emotion and eyes are the big driving factors behind news reporting online, and this leads to enthusiasm to report bad stories or blur the facts.*

*Not saying that this story blurs the facts. Some people really are having this issue. I don't think it is terribly widespread as I don't personally know anyone with the problem (subjective, I know), but John Gruber has reported that he has encountered it at least once. This is just a matter of repeating a news story which shouldn't really come as a surprise to anyone.

I am also experiencing this problem. I did NOT restore the phone from a backup, and resetting settings did NOT work. This seems to be an issue with the prox sensor's sensitivity. I'm hoping apple will fix this with their magical software update. Frankly I'm tired of assigning new ringtones to random contacts while talking holding the phone to my face.

I have noticed significant issues with the screen going dark at inopportune times on my IPHONE 3G when I touch the screen with my finger including during calls. I believe this is a software issue as it worked fine before the 4G update.

I don't have the problem but I wonder if multitasking affects it. Duplicate it whith several apps running then close them all and see if it make a difference. Also, not to be presumptuous, but make sure the top of the phone is actually staying close to your head. I keep it touching my ear the entire time.

I have been having this same issue since I received my phone. I have tried resetting all settings, tried restoring it and using it as a new phone, nothing seems to work. I keep pressing all kinds of buttons with my face. This is my 3rd iPhone, and the only one to ever have any problems like this. Took it to the "genius" bar and they fed me a bunch of crap about holding it differently.

iPhone 4 is a fantastic wireless pocket computer, but it is starting to look like a failure as a working phone.

Problem off and on, though I use Bluetooth a lot. Hope it is a software resolution.

I'm having this issue, unfortunately, like the antenna issue, I think it's also a design problem. They moved the proximity sensor to accommodate facetime. For me, where it used to be is always pressed right to my face, but where it is now, is usually tipped back from my head a bit because you don't want the speaker crammed right into your ear canal. They need to either bump up the sensitivity in software to fix it, or find a new location for it.

I've noticed this a few times recently but thought it was just the way i was holding it against my ear as i hadn't heard of anyone else having the issue. Its never happened with my past 3 iPhones.

Today is the worst that its happened to me, 4 times in a single phone call. Each time it went to speaker phone and i had to pull the phone away from my ear and turn off the speaker... very frustrating.

This along with a dropped call earlier in the day has made me think about taking it back, but theres so much else thats good with it, what do i do

The upcoming software fix will hopefully address this problem. Though it doesn't seem like anything can derail Apple at this point. iPhones continue to sell briskly despite the mainstream press picking up these stories.

It sounds like setting up as a new phone doesn't fix this like people were saying. anybody believe the contrary? is it worth reconstructing my app folders and all of my settings? or should I just hope for an update.

I also have had the first 3 phones and not one problem until I started muting a bunch of calls with iPhone 4

This is pretty annoying.... and embarrassing. When is the last time you heard the tones of random buttons being pressed from the number pad while being one a call. This has happened to me 3 times where the phone has entered the keypad by mistake while being held to my ear causing random tones while I'm on a call.

Not to mention, I've hung up on people numerous times by accident.

Hopefully Apple fixes this.

I have this issue. At first I thought the phone was dropping calls, but it turned out I was muting calls, as well as hanging up with my ear/cheek.

I've also had a couple of close calls when I've inadvertently turned on the loudspeaker.

Yep, my sensor is goofy.

Not bad really, but just really really sensitive some times, others not sensitive at all.

Have ended a few calls already by mistake.

I do get this problem every so often. I'm sure its a software glitch which is very strange as it never had this problem even with the original Iphone.

At this point I just wish Apple would acknowledge whether this is a universal problem or just a problem with some phones, and if a software fix is even possible.

I'm on my 2nd phone already. I'll start returning them every day if I knew I would eventually get one that's usable, but if it's a universal problem I'd just be wasting my time.

I've tried all the fixes with no luck. It happens every time the phone isn't held perfectly still against my ear.
