New hardware, new software, 1.7 million (and growing) sales later... there's going to be a few glitches. Not trying to be an apologist, but I just wanted to get that bit of rational thinking in there before the Android fans swarm in on this one.

Sadly I've been having this problem as well. I was on the phone multiple times this weekend and the phone would randomly switch to mute. If they don't fix these problems soon the FTC will Make apple do a recall

Lets hope the European batch will have iOS 4.1 and a coating on the steel band.
I was hoping for that too, but we're getting closer and closer to July 23rd and these emerging issues aren't exactly being addressed swiftly... the only progress so far is the promise of an update that makes the display show fewer bars. Yay... I keep thinking to myself... maybe I can get a really good deal on an unlocked 3GS? It's still the latest iPhone in Sweden for another couple of weeks, I imagine the 3GS isn't selling so well at the moment so maybe TeliaSonera will give you some sort of clearance sale prices. My 3G is dying (the battery drains in 2 days on standby so it's down to like 50% capacity or less) so I need to replace it soon, but the 4 suddenly isn't looking so hot anymore. Sure, A4 and Retina display, but that damned antenna is looking more and more like a dealbreaker and a dodgy proximity sensor doesn't help.

I do get this problem every so often. I'm sure its a software glitch which is very strange as it never had this problem even with the original Iphone.

It's not software, or at least the software isn't any different, its just apple designed it different. I've already worked out a way to hold the phone without touching the metal band at all, I just need to adjust it so that I remember to push the top part into my head more.

IT IS A PROBLEM WITH YOUR BACKUP- PLEASE READ

I had this problem weeks ago, right around the time I updated my iPhone 3gs to the 4.0 GM build.
I found that by resetting my Network settings under General- Reset, It would correct the issue temporarily.
However, when I got my iphone 4 and restored my backup, I had the same issue again with the proximity sensor not working.
It seemed to be an issue with my backup files being corrupted. The proximity sensor would work fine when I restored the device to factory settings, but when I restored my BACKUP, it would cease functioning.

I found the only way to correct the error was to set up the iPhone 4 as a new phone and import my contacts again.

Try doing a complete restore, but DO NOT RESTORE YOUR BACKUP!
Test it first to see if the sensor works properly.

Edit- guess this didn't help people. It definitely fixed my problem, and bear in mind that this problem FOLLOWED me across devices (From 3gs to 4.0). I even took my 3gs into the shop and got it replaced. When I restored from the backup of the old device, it stopped working again.

Same problem here

It happens to me constantly and randomly. It's hard to replicate the problem, but it happens very often. I called Tech support and they asked me to send the phone back. I just tried the reset settings to see if it works. I'd hate to have to send it back and wait 3 weeks for a new phone, but at the same time if Apple doesn't fix this problem, then I'm going back to my 3Gs. I guess it's my own fault for buying a 1st generation of a new product.

Not true! I have had this problem, no matter what I do. Resetting settings or doing a full clean install, not using any backups, same issue. It comes back after a day or so.

This is going to be the most important software update in Apple's history.

If it works, everything will be good and Apple will save face.
If it doesn't, there's gonna be trouble.

See, that's the thing. Apple can't alter physics with software, so the antenna fix won't fix anything (calls that dropped before will still drop with the new patch). The proximity sensor issue might be software fixable, depends on what the flaw actually is.

Other than that, they better get the fvcking European batch right!

Fix for me!!

The only time I had this problem was when I held the phone up to my eat with my shoulder and it kept moving slightly away from my face.
However, RESET ALL SETTINGS did the job for me. Now I tried it out the same way and it doesn't do it anymore. You guys should try it!

I set mine up as a BRAND NEW PHONE and still encounter this issue on a daily basis. I tried to reset the settings and it did not help.

I believe this could be related to the person's actual ear. The sensor recognizes when it's a certain distance away from your face via an IR sensor. If it lines up with certain parts of your ear that are deeper than that certain distance it thinks the phone is not held against your head and lights up the screen.

This only seems to be a new problem because of the relocation of the actual sensor to above the speaker, where before on my 3g & 3gs it was on the left which would put it around an area of my ear that has a constant depth. So seeing as this problem is only present for some and not all I believe it is attributed to the individual's actual ear shape and depth.

LOL, was playing with the iPhone 4 yesterday at the 14th street Apple store and the thing is a POS. No offense, but I was trying to do facetime and the phone literally crashed in my friends hands immediately.
Oh, it is a POS because you were at Apple trying to use wifi only facetime at the the same time when about two hundred people were doing the same thing?LOL!
I love how people like you jump to conclusions only to get pwned in the end. I have the phone 4 and it is amazing! The screen, the speed etc.
And by the time Apple brings out iphone 5 they would have sold over 20 million iphone 4s.

I took my phone up to the genius here in Memphis and they said I was the first person to have a problem at that store and they replaced it.. But it still does it on this new phone, just not as much

I had it happen once, the day it came out, after restoring from backup. Haven't had the problem since then, but I also believe I've hard reset a few times since then.

My main worry: the other day I was sitting in an auditorium for my wife's family reunion when I felt my iPhone 4 getting really hot in my pocket. I took it out and it was burning up! I kept it out of my pocket to cool down but it kept getting hotter! I have no idea why. Maybe a background task got stuck? It burned through about 25% of the battery until I did a hard reboot. After that all was fine and it cooled back down. Never got any temperature warnings?

Another problem is many times when I pull it put of my pocket, it is at one bar or even drops down to Edge speed, then after having it out for a bit the bars come back and it reconnects to 3G. Yes, I have a bumper. Never had problems like this on 1st, 2nd, or 3rd iPhones. Apple is straight up lying. With bumper off, I can have the iPhone on a table with a great 3G connection and speeds. If I touch only my pinky to the bottom left gap, it drops to no signal some of the time, or edge / 1 bar 3G, getting about 5kbps download and 0kbps upload. At my apartment, which is about 1500 ft from a tower, I have no issues. But now I have issues at work and my parents house where I never had problems before. Lame! I'm a huge Apple fan, but they are starting to piss me off with their lies!

I have 2 iPhones 4 with this problem

I have 2 phones and both have this issue. The proximity sensor doesn't work well and the screen is activated during calls resulting in muting or hanging up calls. I have no reception issue so I guess I was lucky at first but not with this one. Hope the update fixes this.

how many don't have any issue?

My ip4 doesn't have any issues. No death grip signal loss (even in places with 1 bar to start with), no proximity sensor problems. I wonder how many people are in my same problems-less situation.

my iPhone got replaced yesterday, i had two issues 1) reception 2) proximity sensor

Genius bar said, wait for software update for reception issue and replaced the phone for proximity sensor.

i am assuming the replaced phone is new since it has serial starting 8 ...

probably 1% or less? out of millions of phone that adds up

these kinda replacement may be going on for other iPhones also, but this issue looks like wide spread in iPhone 4

Apple always nice, they check it and said we will replace it, for that i appreciate them :D
