Does anyone see a correlation with all these recent product fails and the fact that they are produced in China? Prisoner labor, child labor, abysmal harsh working conditions. Bad Karma? Or the scourge of State run factories? Did Apple have these problems when products were made in civilized countries with basic worker protections and rights?

Clearly caused by an overheating graphics chip that is unable to cool itself properly in the thin case.
This issue will cause Apple a huge headache until it adopts an engineers attitude to design.

We look forward to seeing your industrial designs in the future.

Where was the G4 cube manufactured?

This almost certainly affects a tiny, tiny minority of people. Probably less than 0.01% of all purchases. Let's not blow things out of proportion, and we all know Apple will make things right for the unlucky few.
[doublepost=1480726704][/doublepost]

A few defective MacBook Pros doesn't change a single thing.

Yeap, i've been one of those minority with two out of my 3 MBP since 2007. Everybody i know with 2011 amd pro's are in that minority too...

Why is the MacBook Air bigger and heavier than a MacBook? Why is a MacBook Pro lighter and smaller than a MacBook Air?)

This!!

I can understand that slim is sexy and desirable. But I want a pro-laptop and one that does not have a repairability score of 1/10.

I actually want a light laptop. I don't care how thick it is (within reason) The thickness of the 2012 rMBP was fine.

I want to say a BIG THANK YOU to all the early adopters who are paying SO much money for dealing with all the problems until the rest of us can buy the fixed machines for a more realistic price.

Thanks again, we love you. Stay strong!

I'm not an apologist. But I also refuse to jump on the 'hate everything Apple does because Tim Cook...' bandwagon.

Apple is still an incredible company making the very best products. A fact underlined by the fact there are huge waiting lists for the new MacBook Pros, iPhones are still on 2-3 week waits for shipments, etc. Apple cannot make their products quickly enough to fulfil demand. This is not evidence of a company in trouble.

Apple is an incredible company but no longer make the very best products. They still make great products, don't get me wrong, but they make compromises and decisions that are very polarising and piss a lot of people off.

Apple should create separate divisions with dedicated staff to make the very best iPhone, the very best Mac, the very best Apple TV etc...

All to often we hear of people moving off the mac and on to the phone etc

And again gpu issues with a macbook pro. My 2007 macbook broke down due to them - every 3 months a reflow did help keeping it usable for a while. My mid 2010 macbook pro with amd extended graphics does suffer from gpu panics as do later macbooks. And
Now the newest one suffers from it as well. As much as I like the macbook pro I want it to be quite perfect - guess that's a reasonable wish when paying premium. So, I'll wait for the next one, and I won't include an discrete GPU anymore until Apple has proven to have fixed this for real.

Note: in all cases the gpu problems only started just after the end of the recall period. I'm quite disappointedt o read this news article.

Apple quite clearly jealous of all the press Sammy got with their exploding phones, so trying to steal some thunder back with the appalling MacBook Pro issues.

Clearly these people complaining are just using their new Macbook Pro's wrongly.

The Skylake iteration has had numerous glitches on several Windows laptops. I have a Dell XPS 13" and it suffers from coil whine and flickering/corrupted displays. It's improved noticeably with numerous updates of Intel drivers. It's possible the 13" is stuck in the same path?

The 15" looks much more ominous, hopefully it's driver related and not a design or manufacturing flaw.

So did you ever do a reball?

Reballing - especially if you use lead balls - will be superior to a reflow because a reflow just reuses the same material, whereas reballing allows you to replace inferior material with better solder balls - in particular, ones less prone to cracking

No, it's a design issues, most likely. In their insane quest to make things even thinner, they ****ed up the thermal cooling of the GPU. Nothing bad happens if you use it to post to tumblr, but once you really tax the GPU, it overheats.

If this is true, a couple years down the road we'll see lots of those MBP's die due to their GPU kicking the dust.

always funny to see this. Wanna list all your apple devices too?
mine started in about 2005
  • iMac G5 17"? (2005?) (Still have it but it is in a box.
  • iMac 2006? (Gift for Mum)
  • iMac 24" (2008?) sold it
  • MBP 2009
  • rMBP 2012 (still have it but it died)
  • (External LG DVD drive (why would I pay Apple tax to get their one for something i rarely but do use))
  • (Dell XPS 2016 (oh that's worrying why no Apple laptop?))
  • iPhone 3GS (still have it, not used)
  • iPhone 4 (Son now has it)
  • iPhone 5 (wife now has it)
  • iPhone 6
  • iPhone 7 (Nah never bought one, they pissed me off removing a standard audio port) oh that's worrying...
  • iPod 5th gen? video (have it, don't use it)
  • iPod shuffle (have it, don't use it)
  • iPod touch (have it, don't use it)
  • Apple tv
  • New Apple tv
  • Time Capsule
  • Trackpad (have it, don't use it, can't get the battery cover unscrewed)
  • (Several mice (non Apple they can't make ergonomic mice, thin just doesn't work on a mouse, neither does a single button))
  • (Ethernet Dongle, non Apple - rMBP didn't have one)
  • (3.5mm headphones non Apple - the Apple ones die so easily)
  • iPad 1
  • 2 x iPad air
  • 2 x iPad mini (1 was a Gift for Mum)
  • Apple watch
  • Aperture 1, 2, 3 (Yeah you pissed me off discontinuing that one Apple, smart move...)
  • iMovie (pissed me off removing the feature to delete portions of events to free up disk space)
  • extra ram for 2 iMacs and 1 MBP (i remember the good ol days when you needed more ram, you just popped out a pair and slotted in double the ram)
  • SSD for MBP (again the good ol days when you could replace a 5000rpm HDD with an SSD)
So why did I switch from Apple to Windows and may switch away from the iPhone?
  • Apple price gouging and the exchange rate does not help. If you are going to charge me top dollar, then make sure you give me what I need, not what you think I need and don't dictate what I need, how I should hold it etc etc
  • Apples fetish with thin. I want things to be light, yes thin is nice but not when huge compromises need to be made.
  • Use of non standard ports - lightning
  • Removal of every port etc under the sun (SD, Ethernet, HDMI, USB-A, 3.5mm jack, magsafe) (An please, no replies about how USB-C is so much better than USB-A, I know it is and I love USB-C, at this moment in time I want both)
  • Slow to innovate - waterproofing took an age, no fast charging
  • Repair score of 1/10
  • Apple likes to use solder rather than daughter boards.
  • Poor cloud services
  • Siri disnae unerstand meh Scottish accent :D take me to floor illivin (11). Did you know that Google was seeking helpers to improve speech recognition of the Scottish twang.
  • When a phone costs more than a laptop, you know there is something wrong.
  • Quality control, 2 iMacs and 2 MBPs have been back at Apple, every phone I own has been replaced except the 3GS due to issues. Trackpad battery screw cover won't open rendering it useless. One iPod was fixed.
  • Not letting me control my files. Have you seen how hard it is to give some a file without wireless or how hard it is sometimes to get a file from one app to another.
  • 5 years is now too short to give up supporting battery replacements. Apple you are smart enough to solve this issue but I guess with planned obsolescence you are happy not to.

How many people with a 15" and the AMD 460 do not have issues? I have a 15" with the 460 and I have yet to see any issues on mine... Personally I am amazed by the performance of the gpu - so much faster, colder & quieter than the 650m...

Of Course this could all change in a heart beat and then it will be "waiting for Skylake" all over again :(

As an Apple fan, I'm sad to see their long awaited MacBook Pro updates see more and more problems, although it's kind of expected since there's greater focus on the more profitable goods.
As a consumer, I'm happy that there are alternatives to the once almighty and force-to-be-reckoned-with Apple.

Let's see my Apple laptop faults...

The old pre unibody model had an internal power supply board fault, a known Apple issue fixed free under a repair programme.
A unibody first gen Pro with finger prints behind the screen, replaced for fee, the replacement also had the same problem, replaced again, the third was passable..

And that third Apple laptop had a GPU failure, a known Apple issue they fixed for free..

Every single Apple laptop I've owned has had an issue with it. I've also had a TimeCapsule replaced for free for a know issue.

Not a good history. And Apple are continuing that history of 'known issues'.

This looks like a thing that cannot be fixed by a dongle.

USB-C to thunderbolt 2 dongle.

After which you have to spent another $1000 on egpu and video card and problem fixed

Some smartarse will just can an egpu with USbC connector though...

You mean a time capsule failed during the warranty period and not a few days after....who would have thought....

It is obvious now that something is going entirely wrong at Apple. The Apple of today is not what Apple was about at 2003 - 2006, maybe because they had "Apple Computer Inc." in their name.
