Google is so far ahead of apple maps it's embarrassing and they're pulling further ahead every day. In countries other than the US it's even more lopsided. Apple is in way over its head on this one. Way out of their league.

I don't think Apple has to be better because that ain't happening. It at least as to be not so bad, but it fails at common tasks.

Almost 2 years in and I haven't seen any improvements in how Apple searches for a location. Give it an exact address and yes, it will find it. That's the naive case. Start using cross streets, or a street, city, and location name and it fails.

And don't get me started on helicopter view...

2 POI have been wrong near where I live. They exist, but they are about a half mile from where they should be. Google Maps had one of the same POI in error but a different POI wrong that Apple Maps had right. They have been wrong since Apple Maps launched.

I've been submitting dozens of requests to change them since, but have gone unanswered. Until a month or so ago.

One error has been fixed, and the other has not. Actually, it disappeared from the map altogether. And a few days ago, I submitted to fix the wrong POI one more time, and I was asked if I would like to be notified. I selected yes and am waiting to hear back atm.

Oh, really?

In Houston, we have a fair amount of energy company offices. Most of those show up with a gas station icon in Apple Maps.

Wonder if anyone has run out of gas driving around a 20-story office building looking for the fuel pumps?

What happened to add a POI? There used to be an option to do that but not anymore, all you can do is relocate, inform them that the POI is no longer there, or any other error. You can't add it.

Aha, my town is finally in colour, although the image quality is very poor; the locally-made Bay Explorer is almost an order of magnitude ahead in terms of image quality. There's also still a Subway in one of my neighbours' back yards (I reported that about a year ago).

Edit: The imagery is newer than Google's now; I can see an under-construction highway that doesn't appear at all with Google Maps.

I was using Apple Maps today on the Mac to set up some locations for upcoming calendar events. You don't have any choice because Calendar uses Apple Maps. It still sucks big time in the UK for POI data. I ended up having to use Google Maps to find each POI, then look at the map to find a suitable street address, then enter that into Calendar. So much for "it just works". And one village was missing completely: it decided the only match was in Texas. Maybe it is improving, but it's still hugely disappointing, and nowhere near good enough.

For those users who are seeing their error reports being implemented, how are they reporting them and are they all in the US?

I only ask because I'm in Canada and not a single error report that I've submitted has been implemented. I've reported each error via both the Apple Maps app itself and via TomTom MapShare site. Is there another error submission method that works that some of us don't know about?

I'm in Toronto, Canada and I've been using the "Report a Problem" button within the Maps app. I'm on iOS 7.1.1, if that's relevant.

In the few years that I've used Apple Maps, I've had only a few incidents where I was sent to a wrong location. In some of those cases, I was able to send a log and they were corrected. However with the new iOS Beta, I've noticed that the Bookmarks feature is missing which could be a dealbreaker for me.

I just submitted an error for a street in my hometown that has been changed for over a year. Google updates the area pretty quickly, which is one of the many reasons I have stuck with google maps. I will see how long it takes for apple to fix it and report back.

I just realized that ios autocapitalizes Star Wars but not google. Guess that's because people use google as a verb and not just a proper noun, but still kinda funny.

Still calling BS on this kind of claim.

Look up "Jantzen Beach Supercenter" - a mall near my home office north of Portland. Google Maps shows plenty of things to offer, lots of pictures. Apple's only slightly different. GMaps aerials show a thriving business center, Apple's showing something different.

The Supercenter was torn down over two years ago...

What's the point of this front page story when most of the posts so far are about how much Apple's maps app sucks?

the problem with a service like Apple Maps is trust. Once you get burned by it, you are going to stop using it and it takes a lot to get that trust back.

arn

Trust or no trust, a device is only as smart as the user.

Have you not heard? Apple sucks first in this site than any where else.

I much prefer Apple maps.

Exactly. To use a map service is a choice, but to some it is a religion.

I've noticed a couple of routes that used to be way off the right way to go have now been corrected much to my surprise and delight. :)

I was in Turkey earlier this year and relied on Apple Maps without any issues. Just my $0.02.

Glad to hear. Whenever I try to find a place wile visiting a foreign country, I always double check with a real map.

Oh one shopping mall? Apple maps has entire cities covered in clouds. Japan looks like a blank wasteland in some areas. Behold the awesomeness of Apple Maps: http://theamazingios6maps.tumblr.com/

i just find it amusing that this thread title references significant improvements in Apple's maps data and yet nearly comment is saying just the opposite.

I have reported this one several times since the launch of Apple Maps and it still hasn't been fixed.

That's a pretty silly site to reference, given that it's about iOS 6. That's nearly 2 years old. Apple Maps has improved by leaps and bounds since then.

You would think so wouldn't you? But Apple hasn't done much work on it since, they didn't even mention it at WWDC. Guess it's not a priority for them.
