For now on my G3 iBook, Youtube comes via Safari with Nokia N90 UA, javascript and styles switched off going to www.tonvid.com, copying the link, then clicking a script shortcut from my old G3 player package which passes the video to youtube-dl/MPlayer.
Safari is superfast searching www.tonvid.com with the options I mentioned and the scripts allow me to either download the video and play/move it separately or download, watch and delete when finished.

What exactly would I require from the packages that you provided here in order for this to work for me? I just want to make sure that I'm not installing redundant packages, given YouTube's constant chop and change.

For low res streaming (on your G3 iBook) you don't need this method - just the browser and RealPlayer (or QuickTime) will work.
To download/use 360P, youtube-dl is needed - which also requires Python. You can install Python on it's own or install PPC Media Center which does it for you (and is useful to have anyway.)
Bear in mind, your iBook might not be able to play 360P h264 video - my 600Mhz one only just can do it.

This doesn't work for me. RealPlayer (10 Gold) reports that "needed components were not available. (video/H263-2000, amrn)" and QuickTime fails as you can see in the images below:

You don't need to copy the link if everything is setup correctly. If you open TFF and have the Classilla ua loaded in prefs (which is a Nokia device) and go to https://m.youtube.com clicking on any video will ask you what app you want to open the video with, select remember and it wont ask again - it opens and streams the 3gp file.
I'll upload the right version of RealPlayer to use shortly.

Is the sound quality good for you? with this method? or is it low quality mono audio that you usually get with these streams.

The sound is passable but upon closer inspection with headphones and stereo test videos, it does appear to be mono because the channels didn't switch from one to the other during the tests.

No problem - don't forget you can use a FoxBox, ArcticFox etc with the Nokia user agent too.

I celebrated too soon! It worked once and after that refused to play ball - with two different ISPs. QuickTime also failed. :(

However, I decided to try the unlikeliest candidate...

The outcome? Back in business and consistently! :D

I don't know why RealPlayer only worked once but VLC is doing ok albeit with a few glitches but ok regardless.

No, the sound isn't great and it's sometimes falls out of sync - youtube-dl used to be able to download the 3gp files which is preferable but now it doesn't, even worse, the developers insist the 3gp files no longer exist and refuse to address the problem.

All of it's a strange mess, VLC never worked for me. Coreplayer (on G4s) worked with the url but not in conjuction with the browser - same with my MPlayer scripts too.

So it is, when I refer to the Nokia UA I mean this one, which I believe is an option in Classilla:

NokiaN90-1/3.0545.5.1 Series60/2.8 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1
I always assumed the Nokia UA rendered YouTube the same as Classilla as seen in the pic below. Even In your own video, arctic fox with Nokia UA rendered the old style mobile Classilla YouTube. Whatever happened to that?

Can you explain? I don't understand what you are asking?
In the screenshots taken above by TheShortTimer, the mobile YouTube page was the default youtube rendered by any mobile device and when you told him to use Nokia UA to play videos, he took another screenshot and YouTube still looked the exact same, even with the Nokia UA. What happened to that old classic mobile YouTube design (that you got using Arctic Fox) when switching UA's?

As far as I know (and by the look of the screenshots) @TheShortTimer didn't change to the Nokia user agent.

According to this the owners of Real Player are still up to their old Spyware tricks. I forgot that this was why I ceased using it on my PCs during the 2000s.
