My father's old iMac10,1 is pretty just about all done. Not much life left in it. Which product does he need to buy in order to use the HDD as external, and access the files on it? He has a lot of photos and videos on it, that he would like to backup before doing anything else.

Will this do the trick? http://www.amazon.com/Sabrent-Converter-Activity-Support-USB-DSC5/dp/B000HJ99DI

    Thanks,
    Caspar

That can work, but it may be more convenient to get an enclosure for the existing hard drive. The 2009 iMac uses standard 3.5" SATA II (3Gbps) hard drives. Any of these would do the trick: http://amzn.to/1UvFZig The only catch is that 3.5" hard drives (compared to 2.5" ones) require additional power, so some of those include their own power supplies.

You might be surprised by how well the machine will function with the HDD replaced by an SSD. I have machines that old and older which are fully functional for most tasks and faster than they have even been thanks to an internal drive swap.
