And I would get updates on how everyone was doing, but if I didn't have it, I would have had just as much fun, and saved the $5 for 30 minutes I paid 4 or 5 times on the trip.

I just like being able to have the same connectivity I have back home. In Europe it costs me $10 a day, but I just looked and it looks like that's not the case in Tanzania! :)

I think I paid like $5 a minute quite a few years ago to make a phone call from a plane.

Several years ago a buddy of mine turned on his phone in London for a short time to get his bearings when he was lost. I think he said the charge was $70. Truly dark times.

$5 a minute to call from a plane would have been a great deal seeing what pay as you go world roaming costs today. Maybe it was $10.

I've been on a cruise with the family two different times. The ship offered wifi (for pay), but I declined. An entire glorious week without internet. It was beautiful.

When I'm away from the office, I'm often expected to take phone calls, emails, etc. I didn't want to do that, so I used being on the ship as an excuse to be completely unreachable for a week. No regerts.

On my Europe trips even though I have connectivity I make it a point to not read the news at all, especially politics. It's a nice break.

I want internet on vacation when I really need it. Maps and looking up info on places to eat or go to. I try to cut down on the browsing and stuff but its hard to resist sometimes.

Worry about having internet during the vacation ? I know it is suppose to be a vacation.
Absolutely, but it's less of an issue than it used to be. This last vacation we took in France (Feb2019), the 5 places we stayed, a couple more like B&Bs, all had networks.

The last cruise I was on several years ago still was charging internet by the minute or megabyte and wasn’t fast enough for streaming. It looks like some cruises now have streaming capable satellite internet. Royal Caribbean is like $20/day which isn’t horrible I suppose.

You can always use public WiFi when you get to your destination. Unless you absolutely need to check into work or whatever, I’d say forgo the internet. Unplugging can be anxiety inducing in the beginning but it can be a nice break.
