I don't expect Apple to change.

Good news is, GPU's are getting better no matter what. Whatever they put in the new MBP's will no doubt be better.

I may not be a 280m GTX, but it will be better :)
unless they use only integrated graphics for the low end, but I don't see that happening.

Does anyone NOT like this announcement??

BTW, does this mean we will finally play Half Life 1 on the Mac after it was cancelled?

Gamers are for crappy pc's and console games. We dont need gamers on Macs. Macs are for people who want to do serious stuff, useful stuff, creative stuff and important stuff

I've been running CS:S from my first-gen 2.0Ghz Unibody Macbook through bootcamp with decent results. Now that it's going to be ported over to Mac, will I see quality improvements or should I expect the same graphics capability as with bootcamp?

so this means my late 2007 Macbook should work...right?

Maybe the "we don't need gamers on the Mac" brigade are the last bastion of Mac snobbery. Thanks to Steam, it looks like that'll soon be history. ;)

Yes, I use my Macs for all the creative & important stuff, but I also want the option to unwind & enjoy myself by playing some of the best games available on my iMac.

and 90% of the time, for people who want to look cool while they sit in starbucks.

Not the first time.
Halo was weeks from release on the Mac, playable demo was on cover disks of magazines when the company was acquired and held for xbox release.

Wait it's not really that funny MS gaming devision was always a strong hold o Mac users. Most of the game production at MS was done on Macs just never released in Mac form.

Little known fact.

The beta dev kits for the xbox360 were G5 PowerMacs.

Seeing the 360 is powered by a PowerPC itself.

Of course now the Dev kit is this sexy beast right here:

Its funny this is probably the first good looking dev kit in a long time. PS3's current kit is this monster:

Which makes me think that MS clearly has a bunch of API's and a version of Direct X that would've worked on PowerPC based Macs.

haha I think the ps3 devkit has a retro charm. Reminds me of the CDTV.

What's the point of a pretty devkit when the version the consumers get looks so bad.. Other than the black/special ones.. Is the external casing the same as the early ones? My 360 went a fetching shade of "90s Office PC Biege" over time. Not classy, hehe. That devkit is slick looking though.

Indeed, The Mini isn't really a good competitor to a custom gaming rig. You're paying for things like the form-factor etc there. (how does your quad core tower look under your TV?)

If it had a nice clean front I'd like it as a finished product too :p
It'd fit in nicely under many tv sets with AV equipment (like my 'quad core' htpc does - you're right about paying for form factor, but there's nothing to stop people putting 'gaming pcs' in decent looking cases under the tv)

I'm all for custom pcs don't get me wrong.. :) I'm on a 4ish yearly cycle of upgrading my windows tower's innards, so my iMac is currently my best gaming machine.. I'm happy about the steam thing anyway. Less rebooting is always good.

How much more full of yourself can you be?

I'm a gamer, and I love this news. Also can't wait for Starcraft 2.

I also do important stuff since I'm running a startup company at the same time. So please, check your ego at the door next time.

I have some questions for self-proclaimed "hard core gamers."

How many times a year do you purchase a new computer or new GPU to stay on the bleeding edge of gaming? Do you purchase on the day of each new hardware release? Is that the definition of a hard core gamer? To have the latest and greatest GPU? Or is it that you really really like playing video games? Both?

I enjoy a game now and then. I tend to enjoy strategy and puzzle games more than first person shooters. Portal looks like a nice hybrid. I guess I must be a casual gamer- especially as I have a Nintendo Wii in my home. I do have a Windows based PC, though, so maybe that counts for something? I'm more of a "soft core gamer" perhaps. On the other hand, my work and life are hard core enough. When I play games I'm usually trying to relax. So that, perhaps, makes it more of a "casual" experience.

So, my final question. If I buy a bleeding edge PC to play a bleeding edge game, how long do I have before my rants about Apple GPU choices are hypocritical? Six months? A year? Damn, I'm glad I'm not on that wagon.

Some Mac users swap out their machines every year. ;)

And try Folding for people that are hungry for hardware.

You could probably rant about Apple's GPU choices for a year (4870s? lol). Though really Apples drivers are what's hilarious (and kinda pathetic). Will be interesting to see how the OS X counter parts of these source games run with Apples drivers.

Haha every six months? These days new cards worth upgrading don't even come out every 6 months. You would probably upgrade every 6-8 months if you're playing at insane resolutions well above 1920 (which few people do). I just recently upgraded my 8800GTS 640MB I purchased in late 2006/early 2007; that card played every game I came across (with the exception of Crysis/FC2) with max settings @1680x1050 up until a couple months ago when I tried the BC2 beta. Now i own a ATI HD5850.

I really would like to know how anybody can vote this story as negative. Could somebody of the negative fraction step forward and explain, please?

I don't see it as negative at all. Though I do find it quite funny to watch some people go "OMG!! SUCHA HUGE BLOW TO MS!!!" as if the walls of PC gaming are coming down now that an engine over half a decade old is being brought to a platform that is quite small.

You're telling me....I am like hoping for the RROD these days to pick up either a black 360 or the RE5 edition:

My buddy (not into tech that much) when he saw my launch 360 said "it looks like a Dell computer"

We know this already but its been reconfirmed-

Valve games will be cross compatible in online play, and if you own one version you also own the other. Steam Cloud will sync settings too like custom sprays.

It's probably the 4th time I've mentioned my adoration for Valve but really. These guys don't do things by halves, what an awesome step they're taking. I hope every other studio is watching.
