I'm finding that on my new smartphone I'm pressing the volume button instead of the on/off button, very annoying.
As mentioned previously it takes time to get used to a new way of doing things.
Over 3 years with my iPhone 6 I've hit the on/off literally thousands of times so my mind is used to where the button should be.
I wouldn't read to much into The Verge review. It will just involve changing the way you do things with X.

"You're holding it under wrong lightning"

The fix for the antenna? A bumper.

The fix for this problem? Your very own Farnsworth!!

I'm pumped!!!

The only review that matters to me is mine. Others too often have an agenda, much like movie reviews.

I don't expect face ID to be perfect. I don't expect all the apps to be updated in a day and I expect other issues may show up. But being on the leading edge of new technology brings these issues.

I also expect all who decided to buy the 8 to try and vindicate their decision here. You won't see them on the more positive reviews.

Verge are always the most critical when it comes to apple products.

Other who have reviewed face ID say it works well

It won’t be perfect but Touch ID sure as hell isnt perfect
If it wasn't for sites like The Verge and their Apple TV 4K review Apple probably would have never implemented auto mode switching so I for one am grateful that they are actually critical.

Based on what exactly? Certainly not this review or any of the the others that have appeared this morning.
based on the tiny size of that IR emitter. I've always said it will have problems in sunlight, I have shared this concern in the past. But now this person in the review talks about it in negative "light" (pun not intended), then this confirms my ~90% sure assumption it will have problems in the bright sun.

I think we need more evidence that its an issue before jumping to conclusions. I'm not saying its problem free, but one reviewer trying the phone for only 24 hours is not sufficient to confirm any suspensions.

There is a video on here of a guy running around Disney Land, looks like a bright sunny day, claimed to have very good consistency with FID. He didn't show every unlock, but it was clearly a bright California day, so you'd think some of the unlocks occurred outside where he shot several photos/videos.

As always, I'll wait to perform my own assessment - and I'm definitely a "bright sun" user: outside at theme parks, go boating, drive a convertible, live in Florida, etc.

The part about FaceID is very concerning. You have to hold it at a certain distance, certain angle, and not under bright sunlight or fluorescent light to have it work consistently.

I’m sure it’ll still work at least 80% of the time, but it definitely seems like a step back in terms of convenience when compared to Touch ID.

Oh well, I already ordered mine and will just have to live with it.

Did you notice though, when he set up Face-ID, his face was completely washed out with bright lighting. I don't think he set it up particularly well which is maybe why it isn't as reliable as it would otherwise be

To be fair to the reviewer, I think he was trying replicate how he currently uses TouchID (i.e. pull phone out of pocket, unlock and glance at it, put it back) - if it doesn't work in a situation that did work before then there's going to be a pinch point for those people who have to adjust the way they use their phone.

In that regard it's a valid test IMO

If the test is valid in that regard, at least how results are presented is misleading because it sounds like FaceID has issues outdoor in general. That’s what people spreading this in the coming hours (and generating views for the story) will get.

As for issue itself, I feel it pertains the laws of physics and the only fix needed is a mention in the fine prints on Apple site. Anything strong enough to be more intense than sunlight in broad daylight from that distance would probably be eye damaging at selfie distance (or you couldn’t completely trust an automatic system to set the power of the beams based on the distance and ambient light).

That said, the advantages of this technology based on light sources of finite intensity far outweigh the disadvantages.

TouchID wasn’t perfect either as it had problems with dry skin and some skin diseases, gloves, etc.
