Well I liked the photography in the article since they did a good job of showing off the look of the new machine...it is actually quite attractive so I could appreciate someone wanting to jump to it for that.

The argument for the new non-touch being useless pretty much boils down to "you can still buy the 2015 MBP" which has all the ports, etc. and arguably the same or better performance. Not saying I agree but for me I would rather rMB or touch MBP (or heck 13'' Air I guess) than the non-touch rMBP but I agree with the sentiment that this will probably become a popular computer for Apple, especially if it consistently comes in at a lower price point than the touch MBP.

I find the touch bar an insufferable gimmick and if there wasn't the 13" version without it I would definitely ditch Apple after being a loyal Mac person for over a decade. Now I'm trying to decide if I can live with a 13" laptop. If not I will get a Lenovo X1 with Linux on it.

The one issue I have with the author is this quote: "macOS isn’t as major an advantage as it used to be, especially for someone like me whose professional life revolves around Google and Adobe’s cloud services." Most of my apps are also cross platform. But macOS is also about the UX. And for me, that is a major factor in my platform of preference.

"Is there any technical reason why this computer couldn’t have four [TB3 ports], like the $1,799 model with a Touch Bar? Nope, it all comes down to price." - no, the lower-tier CPUs in this model only support two TB3 ports

I don't think that's true. The processor used in this model has 12 available lanes of PCI-Express just like the part used in the higher-end 13" models.

For all this talk of "no SD slot, so bad for the pro photographer!" why is it that Compact Flash is always forgotten? To me the lack of an SD port is more of a blow to the average consumer, not the pro. Besides that, more and more consumer digital cameras (and even some pro) now have the ability to transfer files over WiFi so it lessens the impact of no SD slot if we look further down the timeline. Frankly, I'd say pro audio people should have more of a beef over losing the SD slot than photographers with so many audio recorders sticking to SD exclusively.

Personally, I'm fine using a card reader for my photos as that's what I've always had to do with a laptop and a CF card.

I really want to see the review on the top of the line 15" (which I have on pre-order). Decided that my use, while more than most people, probably doesn't NEED the additional power and RAM that MAY have been possible with a bigger notebook. Yes, I would have preferred to keep the Magsafe, and at least one regular USB port/card reader, but this will probably work just as well. I have my maxed-out iMac with 32GB RAM for the heavy lifting anyways.

"FOR THE FIRST TIME IN SEVEN YEARS, I’M NOT SURE THAT MY NEXT LAPTOP WILL BE A MACBOOK"

This quote is one Apple really needs to pay attention to.

Fantastic review actually, so truthful. Me like him I also spend a lot of my day on Google Apps and Adobe Apps, I need an SD card reader to transfer photos on the go and on trips abroad.

Just like Vlad I'm not sure a MacBook is viable to me anymore. I hope windows has improved a bit over the years. I'm waiting for the Surface Pro 5, I think that will be my next upgrade and I will keep my Retina 15" at home like a desktop.

It's not written by Nilay in fairness, but it's still the usual Verge 'review': the tech specs page interspersed with random comparisons and factual sloppiness finished by an ambivalent conclusion towards the product.

Samsung Galaxy Note 7: Sure, it bursts into flames, but looks good doing it! Verge score: 9.8

Seems kind of dumb to complain about the touch bar as an insufferable gimmick when people haven't been using it for a fortnight.

I usually forget about the SD slot in my Macbook; I'm regularly transferring files off my 60D with the cable anyhow, and if I were getting a DSLR now I'd want it to have Wifi and GPS for better organization. If you have big drives or CF you're using a faster external sled or reader anyhow.

Of all the ports to remove, the SD slot is the most obvious one.

But that's the whole pointlessness of these arguments about ports; some people never use some, some people always use some, and the ones they never use and the ones they always use never line up.

When it comes down to it my only real complaint with the new MBPs is the price increase, which doesn't seem justified with the touch bar additions, and the RAM limit, which is just an Intel problem; Apple was never going to make a huge 1-inch thick laptop, and that ship sailed years ago. Seems like most of the kvetching is secondhand complaints about the lack of other Mac updates over the MBP itself.

I completely agree.

Funny they decided to put both TB3 ports on the same side, for this particular model. What if one was seated in a position where electricity was to the right of them? As a user of the MacBook, trust me, it can sometimes be inconvenient as it ends up tugging the cord something fierce (RIP magsafe). It's also possible an adapter/dongle could cover both ports. Anyway, haven't seen any of the reviewers comment on this, but it kinda bugs me.

The review that this whole thread is about discusses just that.

I held the 13" nonTB today. It feels amazing. I don't know what it is, but it's so solid and cohesive, and the weight feels very evenly distributed. I'm thinking about my 15" right now. I hope it feels similar.

Honestly, Apple couldn't have done such a thin and slim design with any other ports but USB-C. Even an SD card slot would have taken too much space.

I don't know, but holding the new 13" has left an impression on my mind.

It really is a thing of beauty... it's difficult to not like it, especially with that glorious display.

However, there are devices that are thinner than the new MBP that have both USB-A and SD card reader, so they absolutely could have included them and retained the form factor.

No point in fighting them here. they won't listen. Better buy now, we are taking lots of orders, not sure if there will be one from Santa if you delay. Sadly this works. for not limited edition stuff. See with limited edition stuff yeah I'll bite that lure. they only made 5000 of said item, you jump before its gone.

They also won't go historical and realize they use this line often. its our greatest success ever...this time for sure, we mean it....this year.

Zealots gonna zealot. Part of those numbers. Apple has never had a shortage of sales from them. If apple sold knee pads, they'd make for them in several colors (even rose gold) to seal that deal.

MBP has been lackluster for years. To draw an analogy....you take a person, starve them for days, then put bad food in front of them, they will eat it. hell its the basis for military survival training. The advance hardcore stuff like the ones where you avoid capture and if/when caught, go almost POW style to test your tolerances. Those bugs in the jungle aren't fillet mignon, but work well enough to keep you going I am told.

Older MB/MBP on last legs, they held off in 2012, 2013,2014,2015...its now 2016. Some people are hungry, this cricket is looking mighty tasty to them.

Yes because computers are food. You don't need computers to live. You need food to live. At best computers are a first world convenience. Just because you don't like the computers doesnt mean others don't think it's fantastic. I actually tried one out in the store for myself so I already know I want one.

The image in the article of him using a dongle to plug his iPhone into it. If Apple we're going to go all courageous on us they should've gone all the way and put USB C on the iPhone. Short of that they should've at least included the lightning to USB C cable.

Frankly the i/o situation across Apples product lineup is an absolute mess. I mean introducing lightning into the mix of the Mac with the Magic Keyboard/Mouse/ Trackpad, why??
That's the part I also don't understand. With the iPhone7 just launched, why not go to USB-C there too? Then the whole line-up would make sense again, headphones could be used on both devices etc...

I believe it's because that would require two Thunderbolt controllers, one on each side, for a total of two, plus two ports. Instead, they used one controller and two ports to save money and simplify the motherboard design. But I agree, it will be very convenient on the Touch Bar models to be able to charge from either side of the computer. I'd rather gain that ability than keep MagSafe to be honest.
