It's not written by Nilay in fairness, but it's still the usual Verge 'review': the tech specs page interspersed with random comparisons and factual sloppiness finished by an ambivalent conclusion towards the product.
LOL. It's funny how the same site also has an article with the title "The new MacBook Pro looks and feels so good it's unreal"

The review was good until the end... Most of the facts were correct (or all of them - nothing stood out to me), but he spent almost the entire article raving about the laptop, only to then end with "but I need dongles. So Apple lost me." Really poorly written.
Which is even more funny as he currently has a MacBook Air which requires dongles for VGA or video connections as well as a dongle for SD cards too.

Not much of a review. Reads like a user experience one afternoon in a Starbucks.
You might be spot on given the pics in the article literally show someone using the machine at a Starbucks.

The 13" Air (which he is using as comparison) does have a SD card reader integrated - the 11" does not (which is the single negative I have to say about the 11"). For Video connection the Air (both 11" and 13") has a Thunderbolt 2 which can directly be connected to a Thunderbolt display. For VGA/HDMI indeed a dongle is needed. And when an Air is connected to power (with magsafe), there are still two USB-A ports and a Thunderbolt ready to connect to various devices, i.e. two more than in the new Pro 13" sans Touchbar.

So true. I dislike verge reviews for these exact reasons. Like, I understand not everyone wants to read an in depth technical review, but verge reviews provide nothing that a user can't glean from a 5min visit to the Apple Store.

And then after all the random subjective rambling, they can somehow give an objective numerical score for the device as if it's based on any consistent set of test metrics.

"Gee, I was going to buy this MacBook but Verge gave it a 8.3 and the Samsung Ultra Galaxy Edgebook Plus got a 9.1" - Nobody, never.

I expect this will be the best selling Mac for the next several years, especially when the price is reduced by $200 or so within a year.

This is pretty much exactly the MacBook Air update everyone has been hoping for, minus the choice of ports. But the whole point all along is that as soon as you make those updates to the Air, it loses its compelling price point.

Nah, it will not sell well compared to the touch bar jobbie. Its like buying a BMW with steel rims and hubcaps.

Says who. I'd be curious to see the battery life on the touch bar version. I think it's more like buying a 300 series vs a 500 or a 700. I honestly don't know many people who buy laptops that cost $2000. I bought the non touch and if I tell people what I paid they think I'm crazy (this includes fellow students with macs, because they didn't actually pay for them).

"FOR THE FIRST TIME IN SEVEN YEARS, I’M NOT SURE THAT MY NEXT LAPTOP WILL BE A MACBOOK"

This quote is one Apple really needs to pay attention to.
Nobody has ever changed their mind that quickly. Seven years isn't enough time to decide anything

Everyone said bad things oh my god this year my next laptop will not be a mac, so much deja vu with the non optical drive non ram replacement 2012 mbp and look, after 3-4 years its the most loved mac until now

If I told my friends I bought a $2,800 computer, nevermind Apple computer, I think they'd choke. Yes I'm a university student lol. It's pretty much overkill and I rethink how much I'm spending every day. Not getting mine till mid-December, so I will at least see the reviews first and make sure it's a good investment.

Nice. Yea most people don't know how much these things cost. When I had the 12 rMB and my mother asked me how much it was she was shocked when i told her.

I am a student as well but I work and make some decent money on the side. It seems to me that most of the students at school that are using macs got them as presents from their parents. In any case im content with the base line 13.3. Not saying I wont upgrade to the next one but the performance is pretty good for what I do and I am quite surprised at how well it handles the games that I like to play.

That's it? Mine was $3,631. In my last year of Grad School and plan to use this laptop for professional work after. But same thing, my classmate will think I am insane for spending that much on a laptop (think this was about the same price my paid for my first ever Mac, a 17" MBP).

It will probably sell better than the 13" Air it replaces. And it is the obvious step up for people that think the 12" MB is too slow, small, etc.

Apple added enough Mac Book Pro DNA to get people moving up to the higher margin Pro line, but not enough to blur it from being the logical step up from the lower end line.

Because they just has record preorders?

Ok.

No, record ->online<- sales. Ask them if they broke the store sales numbers. They'll properly tell you they didn't sell a single one in a store world wide this launch .-)

Only the base model is in the stores now, so of course they did not break the records. But they are selling in stores.

Yeah, I had an internship over the summer and saved money to finally get a Mac. Wish my parents gave me a Macbook Pro as a gift, I got an HP LOL. To be honest I never knew how expensive good laptops got until I started researching the Macbook Pro and realizing similar laptops are still expensive (albeit still cheaper). A decent Surface Pro or Book is honestly just as expensive for similar specs. I couldn't imagine just buying a crappy laptop, go big or go home right? Have a mediocre for 2 years or a great enjoyable laptop for ~5, no brainer to me.

Same situation except senior in undergraduate, it's my early graduation gift to myself :p
