It's the first commercial in a series for their new ad campaign, though I agree most people won't get it until actual information starts showing up. Here's the thing though, you can't beat apple's advertising, plain and simple and no other phone will get press like the iPhone will.

I think the map commercial was easier for everyone to understand and a better campaign, they just need to show it with people using android devices.

Pretty sure these ad campaigns are just "teasers." Expect a announcement on October 30th, and a release in early November (11/10?)

As someone with a BS in Engineering and Computer Engineering and an MS in Comp Sci, I think I can say this: who is there market? The technology crowd or the 98% of the population that isn't?

1. Do most people care about a real keyboard as long as they can type? No, even a slightly larger "real" keyboard does not buy you much.
2. Simultaneous apps? Most people don't care. Sure, there are some cool things you can do with it, but for the most part, users do not even understand the concept or think it is necessary. And it seems Apple is letting some of the "cool apps" do background given the rumors.
3. 5-MP? Sure, that is nice to have, but 3.5 is pretty close (at least as far as most people will think). It is an advantage over iPhone, but does it make a huge difference to most people? Me, yes, most people no. But most people WILL understand it.
4. Customize? Unless they explain that, 99% of the people won't know what it means.
5. "Widgets"??? "What are Widgets?" will be most people reaction! I have applications that do everything.
6. "Open Development." 99% of users won't care.
7. "Pictures in the dark." Sure, a flash would be quite nice to have, hopefully Apple will take note. Most users will understand that one.
8. Interchangeable batteries? Most users won't care.

And the ending may be cool to SciFi fans/engineering/tech types, but for my Aunt, sister or mother? No. It is too geeky.

Is their market the Linux fans who really understand all this or people who just want something that works (usually)?

The phone may be good (but it does not look as nice as iPhone) but the marketing so far will leave the large section of the market cold.

Totally. I think if a company wants to win over Apple they need to do something completely different than the iphone. Using a standard keyboard is very "out dated". Apple saw the phone market with a different view and created a product that blew everyone away. Thats why they are doing so well and no one else is.

Wild exaggeration is a critical element of trolling.

Nah, ignoring things that are so obvious is a critical element of fanboyism.

FTFY.

I think I'll shoot myself the day there are no more hardware keyboards available.

I think Google and Apple are going to get a little nasty now. With Google basically blocking out Verizon from Apple, Apple is going to get bottle necked slowly.

With the ChromeOS coming, I really think Google is going for the Apple jugular (all they have to do is release a reliable OS that doesn't get viruses that is dirt cheap or even free).

So linux it is?

I still love my iphone but what a great commercial lol.

I hope this pushes apple to bring some of these things to the iphone. The iphone needs real competition - it doesn't have any. I hope this is good competition.

I personally really liked the ad, but found it weird that they went with "DROID DOES" as all their commercials have to reference that Lucasfilm Ltd. has a trademark on the word droid. Seems like a lot of licensing fees would have been cut out had they used a different tagline.

Users will care when all their friends are using Cool As Yet Not Invented Location Services App on their phones, but they can't get it on their iPhone. They won't know why they can't get it, which will be because it requires a background process to ping a server with some data. But they'll sure notice they can't run it.

I thought at first this was bad news for the Verizon iPhone.

BUT, a carrier has to promote all their phones. If this will be a Verizon Exclusive - then Motorola and Google will be expecting a big PR push - aimed at the iPhone target market. The iPhone isn't the only phone that AT&T carries, they advertise those phones. Do they run ads that say, "well, it sucks compared to what the iPhone can do, but we have to offer you a Choice, so if you want buy this BB"?

Didn't think so.

On the other hand, Verizon could actually feel secure in their iPhone position and not need to worry their ads are pissing Apple off.

I don't know.... but those are just some thoughts i've had this afternoon.

I will be jumping on an iPhone if it ever does arrive at Verizon, or with some other carrier besides AT&T.....

People care what their phone looks like?

I guess I'm just a function over form kind of person.

What's real crazy is that Apple provided both Form and Function in the iPhone. What a crazy concept, huh? Apparently all the other companies are still in the mindset that both Form and Function HAVE to be mutually exclusive of each other.

Is that the Droid? It looks a little horrible. Also "iDon't" want a physical keyboard on a tiny device like a phone, but that's just me.

I'm not saying the iPhone doesn't have function, haha. Just saying that with all the whining i see here about what products look like it makes me wonder.

I mean, I really couldn't care less about how my G1 looks. It does what it needs to :]

WHAT A LETDOWN!!! :mad::mad:

That thing looks like it's from the 80's. I don't care what it can do, it looks ridiculous.

The best word in that commercial was 'customize'.

Since when can you do any sort of customization on a Verizon cell phone? (and i mean that in comparison to the iPhone)

I think Verizon has found not just a cash cow but a cash herd.

I am a windows users and I see the android platform similar to the windows platform where it can be used in multiple configurations, hardware, and devices.

IMO there isn't anything close to a jailbroken iphone on the market.

The difference with the android phone (droid) is there was more collaboration on the features and design. Kinda like the neighborhood kids ganging up on the block bully.

The iphone in all its greatness doesn't really have a strong supporting cast of phones offered by ATT.
The android platform will have many variations and offerings.

The phone industry has tried to take on the iphone individually, I think they realized there is strength in numbers and the battle will become a war. A war that will benefit all of us. ATT can't afford to lose market share, Apple may shape their approach to lessen any anticipated market share while verizon and its phone suppliers put on a full court press exploiting the shortcomings of the iphone.

as far as music and other media goes, I think that will be a non-issue as well. there will be stores all over the place and syncing wil be a non-issue.

Personally I would love a phone with removable media.......

Android fails by using Java.

On TV it works... a little.

Have you heard it on the radio. It's horrible marketing. If you are like me, and don't really listen to commercials, it just sounds like another iPhone commercial. I suppose the same thing could be said about the TV commercial if you are watching the commercials with your full attention, but in the background, my ears still hear, "There's an App for that!".

It's still referencing the iPhone.

Advertising committee should be fired.

Well, Apple has 9 months to respond to these "iDont's"

The phone is slated to be released in the next month...

The iPhone is plain and it was designed plain. The whole concept was to draw as much attention to the screen as possible and for you to forget the rest of the form. It was very successful, minus some obvious issues with first iterations like the recessed headphone. But it doesn't have a qwerty keyboard, this phone does hence its looks.

Yeah I know...this and the HTC Desire (Hero) will be coming soon and hopefully some more informative commercials. But they have to keep playing to their strengths, they know where they can't compete (app store).

iphone not perfect but...

Iphone is not perfect, it could be better and apple could make it better, but dam that the phone in that picture is one ugly cheep looking phone.

I am sure taking a picture in the middle of the night would be nice, but wondering how long the battery would last?

Motorola, not Verizon Ad

Why does the New York Times indicate that this is a Verizon commercial? It doesn't appear to be a Verizon commercial, it appears to be a Motorola commercial. And Verizon hasn't attacked Apple, they have attacked AT&T. I'm sure this has been brought up already, but I don't have time to go wading through the posts. Am I on the right track here, or am I missing something?
