Oh man guys

Seriously, attack someone who's on a limited income to begin with. awesome. I came here for help, not to be reminded that I'm poor.

***EDIT**** I CAN buy the iPhone 5 at full retail, Just have to sell my 4S to afford it. But they told me regardless, if i EVER take a smart phone off my Line again, that i won't be able to get my Unlimited Back when I put another one back on. THAT'S my problem

Either way, you're not making good financial decisions.

I was unemployed for 18 months, no one needed to "remind" me that I was poor, but I also wasn't buying $300 phones with $100 monthly bills.

No one is here to attack you. there is nothing wrong with not having money or with not having the newest toys. What I hear from you is that you are letting your stuff define you. If you do that, you will always be broke. the sooner you get to a point where your financial stability matters more to you than the phone in your pocket, the better.

Define yourself apart from your bank account and cell phone and that stress and anxiety won't consume you. Wait too long to learn this and you will waste your life chasing things that don't matter and miss what does.

Very well put.

Maybe he lives in a cheap apartment and does a little yard work for cash. Maybe he doesn't eat out or drink or go to movies. Maybe he doesn't buy clothes or cars or health insurance. It's his life to do what he wants and no one asked you to judge. He just wants to keep unlimited data and sell his 4S, nothing crazy--he is even paying full retail because he knows he is not entitled to a subsidized upgrade!

Why does this keep getting brought up?!

It's a public forum so all sort of ideas/suggestions are going to be brought up, but it's the OP's job to go with the solution that best suits him/her, for better or for worse.

Or just get over unlimited data. Get WiFi at home and pay a little more for a data package.

Actually, almost every scenario with 5 people on an account saves money with Share Everything, unless its 2 or less of the lines with smart phones. It makes more sense to get 10gb for $100 than for 3-4-5 lines to pay $30 for 2gb each per line (or unlimited).

I'm with this guy. Give up the unlimited data. You'll spend less money on the phone, make some money on the 4S, and manage your use so that you don't have overages.

My question is.

I've had Unlimited data for so long. Yes I do have WiFi, but I like knowing that when I'm on the Train, or out and about away from WiFi, and i'm like Hey, this app has an update, or I'm browsing Google for some reason, I don't have to worry about "Am i getting close to my 2GB cap?"

I know most of you see this as a bad financial choice. But you know what? I live at home, because the economy sucks. I don't have any bills, other than my cell phone, cable, what have you.

I'm on a Fixed income. other wise I would have no problems with just ditching my unlimited. But if I'm gonna pay 30 bucks a month, I might as well keep my unlimited.

My only solution to this is to either bite the bullet, or save enough until I have enough for the 5, and then go in and see if they'll transfer everything at once, since I won't be going from a dumb phone, but just to the 5.

I just wanted to know how to handle Verizon, and what my rights were for being a customer since they were Air-Touch. That's all.

Well, you can use the My Verizon app that's free and simple to check your usage, or dial #DATA for a free text of your usage, or check your My Verizon account online.

You have to be on WiFi to download any app that's over 50MB.

And while it's on AT&T's site, here's a decent data calculator. Make sure you're selecting "a day" or "a month" (because who streams hours of HD video every day): http://www.att.com/standalone/data-calculator/index.html

Also, if you have 5 lines on your account as you mentioned earlier, you should really check into the Share Everything because you could save you on your monthly fee (if you have 2+ smartphones), you can add up to 10 devices like iPads, you'll get unlimited minutes and texts, you'll be able to tether for free, and gain the ability to pool data versus per-line (i.e. if you use 3GB and mom and dad only use .75GB, it will work out better than everyone having the 2GB plan).

All in all it isn't that bad... it just requires picking the right data plan, keeping track of a *single* metric of usage via 3 different free ways (4 if you count calling customer service), and having WiFi at home.

I Understand that. I Did not come here for financial assistance. I Came here to ask how I handle verizon and keeping my unlimited data.

Thanks.

Some wisdom will get you a lot farther than knowing how to deal with this single situation.

As for your question, I don't know a workaround. All I would say is if you can't afford it then you can't afford it. Mostly curious why you are even getting the phone in the first place if you're ineligible for an upgrade? Go 1 single year without bleeding edge tech won't kill anyone.

you dont handle verizon, Verizon handles you.

Purchase full retail... keep unlimited data. Just that simple

How much are you really going to lose by waiting a few weeks to sell your iPhone 4s? Say the 5 is announced and the free market price for the 4s drops by $120. (doubtful) That's $10/ month over the next year. Is that $10/mo worth keeping your unlimited? If so - your answer is to wait til the 5 is released and then sell your 4s to pay for it. If it isn't worth an extra $10/mo for unlimited, then it probably isn't worth it for you. Sell the 4s now and use the money to buy the 5,put a dumb phone on in the meantime and go with limited data.

Ok, since I am not a financial expert like everybody else appears to be in this thread, I will not comment on what the OP should do with his/her own money. I do however have a decent understanding of the scenario here.

With verizon if you go smartphone -> dumb phone, you have to change your plan. It's not as simple as switching out your SIM card to another phone, and still stick with your current plan so you can retain your unlimited data. Verizon will see it as a dumbphone when you're trying to activate it and require you to switch your plan.

Therefore, those who are suggesting to the OP to buy a cheap "Go Phone" and use that, unfortunately it will not work.

OP, do you know anybody who has an old smartphone that they'd be willing to let you use on your account until you are able to get the new iPhone?

Rights have nothing to do with this topic and you seem to be confusing "sense of entitlement" with "rights" but that seems pretty typical these days. You save up until you can afford the 5 or you find another smartphone to swap out on your line if you want to keep unlimited That's it. Verizon's policy on grandfathered unlimited data has been covered in countless prior threads and this one brings nothing new to the table.

The facts are the facts whether you feel attacked or not. There's no magical solution for you to take advantage of. That's reality. We all save up until we have the means to do what we want (or we overextend our credit). All of have things on our wishlists that we can't get immediately. That's life.
